Title: newbie here, QNS: mtgox need document?
Post by: darklancer on November 27, 2013, 07:52:24 AM
Hi all,

Newbie here and also newbie to bitcoin.

When I sign up MTGOX, it ask me for identification card and bill document to verify. Is it a must and is it safe?

Next is, 1 BTC is $1000 +++ now , is it still feasible to buy? or wait for it to drop?

thanks all

Mt.Gox introduced verification not so long ago (in May 2013, IIRC). That was supposedly done to increase safety of withdrawals, although at a cost of reduced privacy. I am certainly not comfortable with sending Mt. Gox my ID and/or utility bills, although others may have other opinion on that.

Mt.Gox isn't the only exchange, there are others with less privacy-invading practices.

IMO, Mtgox has severe delay problem for USD withdraw, and you can find way better exchanges.

I registered at MtGox a few months ago and when I found out it needs a copy of my passport as verification (non US user), I just cancelled and have never logged in since.

I suggest you find another exchange. However, it seems several other exchanges have complaints against them too. Please choose carefully.

Thank you all,
may the experience bitcoiners recommend a good exchange? I am not from US.

I wish I can point you to a "trustworthy" exchange, but I really don't know.

I am using one registered in my local country and their bid offer spread is big,
but at least when they do run off with my money, I have an real address for local authorities to work on.

There are subforums here in your local language. Post a topic there and ask to see if an exchange operates in your country and deals in your local currrency. Then search for any complaints/bad experiences against them.

Good luck

You may check localbitcoins, and try to find a reliable trader near you.
