hi.

i've got a new website online that i've been working on, i hope some people will find it useful.

it's called http://bitnot.es (BIT NOTES!)

i realise that most people want to stay anonymous with their transactions and their address labeling, but for those that want online documenting for their labels (and other people's labels), you can now enter that info into bit notes and access it any time, any where.

currently the site only supports the commenting of bitcoin addresses, but i'm going to expand it to include attaching notes to specific transactions, or blocks.

(the 'a' means 'address', later i will add /b for blocks, and /t for transactions)

anyway, this is a very crude first version, i will enjoy improving it more and more whenever i get the time.

p.s. one idea for usage might be if someone knew for certain a 'mybitcoin.com' address, they could create a note for that address on bit notes.

How will you deal with people vandalizing it? Say a scammer adds a note to http://bitnot.es/a/1Lg2rvxbBPC8jp2YJoV5xL7sdyTjueMUot and says: "This a a scammer address the real address is 1L4... "
Or is it pretty much going to be an anyone can say anything kind of deal.

It would be interesting if people can only edit their own address. It may work. You can even probably trick Bitcoin software into doing it. Set up a form where someone wants to say an address is theirs. You then give them a unique price to prove it. You tell them send "0.02828182 to 1Akad..." The 1Akad address being yours. The user then sends that TO THEMSELVES at their own address first at the address they want to prove and waits. THEN sends it to you. Because the BTC's are broken in a unique fashion when they send it to you is will probably come from that address and can be checked in blockexplorer. You now can prove it's them and give them a unique password for the address and return the money.

Then you can have the owner make notes and have others make comments.

(I haven't tried it though if Bitcoin does in fact do this. I have a feeling that after the person sends to themselves they will have to wait for 6 confirmations before resending it or it will just break up a different coin.)

as i mentioned in another thread, i would like to find a good convenient way to allow private notes, along with public ones (so that a note is only viewable to the owner of an address for example).

with payb.tc, nothing stops ANYONE from making http://payb.tc/bitlotto (if it's still available) and entering their address, (as we saw when someone created http://payb.tc/tradehill and http://payb.tc/mtgox).

same goes for bitnotes... people should not just automatically trust a note... just like you don't automatically trust posts on this forum, or take wikipedia pages as absolute truth without verifying it.

so in your example if someone said "This is a scammer address the real address is 1L4..." then a further user could add a note on top of that which says "The previous note is false, and here's a citation http://cite_source".

people that want their notes to be more trustworthy should probably add citations of some kind.

How about OWNER comments?

When people comment they can tick a box saying they are an owner. You give a unique address for them to send BTC to. Same as above but once the BTC arrives the comment shows up. People won't try scamming it as you just return BTC to the notes address and not the senders address. If the senders address matches the notes address you apply the comment and highlight it somehow. If it doesn't match you just return the BTC.

i like your previous idea better :) with your second idea, someone might be willing to part with 0.5 btc to say they are the owner, even if they're not (and they know their 0.5 btc will be sent to the real owner).

If you just use the comment box with a tick mark the person doesn't ever have to remember a password or sign in. They comment and you give them an address to "prove it". They send an amount and if it matches the comment appears. Each time they want to comment they just go through the process again. The tricky part is tricking Bitcoin in doing the send with the actual address you are trying to prove. If it sends with the wrong address it is not a big deal since they are the owner of the address even though they couldn't prove it!! They'll still get their money back. I don't know if you could charge much though as the person may have to do more than one attempt in case someone doesn't work. Perhaps keep a tiny bit but return the rest.

yes i do like the idea, it's actually really great (something for a little later as i get the time), but as you say it can be tricky sending FROM a particular address.

oh, also neither payb.tc or bitnot.es currently have any need to have bitcoind running, they're just simple databases. but doing the above will involve connecting to a wallet. not a big deal, just 1 consideration.

Hmmm. I wasn't thinking that you weren't using a wallet for your stuff. Makes sense of course.

You COULD:
-have the person submit the comment pending approval
-to prove it, the person would send a unique amount YOU specify eg "0.03191387" to the address they want to verify. Then, after they wait for confirmations, send it to to a different address they own. 
-to verify it you would check blockexplorer and see in fact the address SENT that amount. So it's most likely them and not a coincidence the amount matches. It could be, but the odds are slim if you pick a random amount.

was trying to think up a far more complicated method using cryptography :P

Using his method and leaving room 0.0x for those who don't have many BTC there is a 1/9999999 chance of the right owner of the address making a similar payment. It would be impossible for someone else to fake they owned the address I think. If you add a time limit of 24 hours to verify the address that's a pretty small window for the person to unknowingly make an identical payment!

yep, disappeared.

practically no one was using it.

if it were really that useful, i'm sure there'd be some kind of clone eventually with better features and better support.
