Title: Help needed recovering Hive wallet
Post by: ekissane on May 05, 2018, 03:06:30 PM
Hello folks,

I have an old Hive wallet on a MacBook and when I try open it using my password the application just shuts down.  I was able to access it 2 weeks ago.
I have the bitcoinkit.wallet file and the password
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Have you tried to uninstall and install back the hive wallet app?
If not, maybe you can try from a virtual machine, if you have the .wallet fie and the pass you should be able to recover it if it works correctly (the wallet app), for it sounds as a problem with the app. Maybe you upgrade your computer and this is not working anymore, for it is really common in IOS system. That's the reason of trying to open it in a virtual machine with an older operating system (the one you had when the wallet app was installed).

I hope it works.

Did you update the wallet software in the meantime? Or didn't you change anything at all?
If there is a new update available which changed communication to server, etc.. it might be due to an old version. Updating would help in this case.

You might try out this tool (https://github.com/JesseCorrington/bitcoinj-wallet-export (https://github.com/JesseCorrington/bitcoinj-wallet-export)) which has been designed to dump private keys of old hive wallets.

Possible causes:

Hive wallet isnt updated or the new update of OS on your Mcbook do affect the application.I agree on the suggestion above you either you VPS and try it on older version with either the older and newer version of hive wallet too.

There is no "newer" version of Hive wallet... it has not been actively developed since 2016...

If it is the MacOSX version of the wallet, apparently you might be able to make it work with MultiBit Classic, as per the Hive Dev's comments here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/5zft9b/how_to_recover_old_hive_wallet/

So... in theory, you could:

1. Install MultiBit Classic 0.5.19 (installer archived here: https://multibit.org/releases/multibit-classic/multibit-classic-0.5.19/)
2. Open your wallet file using MB Classic
3. Export your private keys from MB Classic... Video tutorial by MultiBit devs here: https://youtu.be/LaijbTcxsv8
4. Import or Sweep your private keys into the wallet of your choice

Note: in Step 3. no need to use Electrum if you don't want to... just ignore the bit at the start about installing Electrum and follow the video up until around 1:25 secs where you have the text file exported. Having said that, I would highly recommend Electrum as a replacement wallet.

Just note that the options in Electrum changed slightly in newer versions... You need to select "Import Bitcoin Addresses or private keys" instead of "Standard Wallet" when prompted to select what kind of wallet you want to create:
