Please delete this thread, ASAP.  The scammed amount was paid back to me a year after the incident initially occurred, and I have agreed that if he paid back what he stole, I would have this thread deleted.

Can you actually take him to court because you can prove it he received it? And you have all communications with him.

There's no need to reveal that info. It's clear as daylight: To go buy drugs on Silk Road for "festival enhancement". Elementary, my dear Watson.

which is what i don't get - it seems like he would realize this (scamming for $555) would be a very bad idea ... too many drugs to think straight, maybe.

In my experience with addicts they tend to ignore faults in their reasoning if that means they will get their fix harder/better/faster/stronger.

That sucks.

I would certainly take legal action against him, I'd say you have enough proof to win the case, and so all the financial court charges will be on him.

Write a response back to PayPal stating that you will be taking legal action, he may fold.

If I was you, and you know the festival he is attending, take a few buddies down and give him a nice greeting.

He likely was very sober when he made that decision.  He stole $555 with essentially 0% risk.
Just like hundreds of other scammers do.  You are never seeing that $555 back again.

The idea that he should be worried is kinda laughable.  Hopefully you get your money but honestly your story isn't unique.  Search the forums and you will find a couple hundred exactly the same.  They all have the same outcome.

idk, this one was retarded enough to leave huge tracks all over the net. It would be extremely easy to instigate a "karmic backlash", i.e. inform any- and everyone he has ever known, what a fine upstanding character he is.

Are you remotely close to NC?  File a police report for theft.  Give the police all of his information that you have.  Then go to small claims court (not what they call it in NC), and file suit for breach of contract and conversion.  You know his name and address.  Have the sheriff serve him.  He'll have 30 days to respond.  If he doesn't, you win by default.  Execute on him and recover your money.

Now is this a pain in the ass?  Yes.

Is this going to cost money?  Yes, but you can do all of this yourself without an attorney.  Your costs will be travel expenses plus court costs.

But that's your only legal recourse at this point if you can't talk him into just paying you back.

Do you have much info on this guy?...

He lives in a very small town with a population of just 17,186 people. He also lists interest/membership to several smaller circles of interest groups within that town community.

Dropping info about this thread strategically with these groups as well as community heads in a town that small will have the whole town discussing that in a miniscule timeframe. These communities are usually starved for fresh juicy news to blabber about.

I had a guy scam me out of $900 for a computer using paypal a while back.

I filed in small claims court and he never showed up.  I got a judgement against him and they arrested him and about a year later I got a check from the court for the full amount.

It was a pain in my ass but I got my money and I was happy.

bo2573

Good for you!  That's great with physical goods.  Won't work with BTC.  It is also against PP's TOS.  Any bitcoiner is assuming that risk when using it as a medium of payment.

The point it that collection does not have to end with PP.

That is what we are doing here.

Then maybe a call to his probation office that he's committing internet fraud would be in order.

You might want to let Mr. Corbin know that in advance.  He may agree that paying you back would be more beneficial then facing additional charges.

ALL HE HAS TO DO IS CALL PP AND TELL HIM HE RECEIVED THE MERCHANDISE AND PP WILL RELEASE THE FUNDS BACK INTO YOUR ACCOUNT.

I wonder how Paypal will do that after he's taken out all the money to buy more drugs.

I have no idea.  The claim was filed on his behalf via his credit card.  The email I received from PayPal stated that the transaction had already been reversed, and since I don't have proof of shipping, they automatically side with him.

Funny thing is that he didn't claim that the charge was fraudulent - he just claimed he never received the item (bitcoins) .... which at least is an admission on his part that he did in fact place the order himself.

Sure you do.  No reason you can't file a small claims court lawsuit just the same as bo did.  It'll be more difficult to explain the bitcoin part of it, but you're still owed the same amount of recompense for your troubles.

Yes, I can prove with the blockchain.info link that it was sent and received into his bitcoin wallet.  The difficult part is trying to decide whether or not to reveal certain other info regarding why he wanted the $555 in bitcoins that day.

Is it possible you could be held liable for aiding a crime?

Give him a few days to return the funds, or cancel the PayPal action, if he doesn't then file a police report. It won't cost anything and won't take long.

selling digital computer code that may or may not be used as a medium of exchange and/or to buy drugs is NOT an crime.

If I sold someone a hammer and he beat you over the head with it.  Am I liable.   Ahh NO.  Now if I told someone  I would buy him a hammer if he would beat you over the head with it and he does and that could be proved in a court of law then that is a different story.

If he's reading this thread, and senses you're not going to do any thing about it, you won't see any of it back.

He scammed you, now you have two options:
Report it, and potentially see a return.
Do nothing, get nothing.

selling digital computer code that may or may not be used as a medium of exchange and/or to buy drugs is NOT an crime.

The OP mentioned that this guy told him exactly what he wanted to buy.

technically, he mentioned needing bitcoins for stuff for a festival.  i didn't ask what stuff, nor did he tell me.

by the way, the email he sent saying he had no idea what i was talking about or whatever because he lives in colorado ... well, the ip:
http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip/68.119.34.71

Boone, NC.

Will do, Andrew.  Hope we can all find something more worth our time/energy for the rest of today.  Seems to me our Mr. Chandler Weyman "Takliano" Corbin has quite a bit of bad karma built up against him.  Eventually, that kind of thing topples over.

And hey, it taught me a good lesson: Eric Cartman was right about hippies!

Anyone who googles:

Chandler Weyman
Chandler Takliano
Chandler Corbin

Like family, friends, business associates, attorneys and law enforcement will come across this thread and may have more info to add or assistance to provide.

his response was that he didn't know what i was talking about because he lived in colorado.  which was kind of funny because that response was sent from Boone / Chapel Hill, North Carolina -- and he also mentioned on his fb page about having lived in CO before.  so, basically, it is / was the correct person and he plans just to keep on scamming, apparently.

he replied to an email that i sent to his PayPal-listed email address -- from the PayPal account he used to scam me.  i knew it came from NC because i looked up the IP from his email:  68.119.34.71  ... which is Boone, NC.

Most mail servers send the real IP along side the server IP.
Sometimes it will show a LAN IP instead of the WAN IP, depending on how the router is setup :P

Most of them do, yes. That's an anti-spam measure.
The days when webmail only sent the mail server IP are long gone thanks to spammers.
I think yahoo was one of the last webmail services to drop that.

Hire locally? Backpage.com?

and yes, i'm aware that such a transaction would be illegal. I'm posting facetiously.  Still, hippy deserves a truncheoning.

A bit of good news from PayPal this morning:

"Your buyer filed a chargeback with their credit card company asking to
reverse the above payment. Although your buyer reversed this payment, we
want to work with the buyer's credit card company to get your money back.
We are using the information you sent us to dispute the reversal."

So even if I never get the money back, at least PayPal is disputing the chargeback on my behalf!
