‘Big Bitcoin Heist’ Suspect Regrets Fleeing Iceland after Jailbreak

Sindri Thor Stefansson, a 31-year-old man who escaped from prison in Iceland and was rearrested two weeks ago in the Netherlands, has expressed regret for the jailbreak and his decision to flee the country, where he was a suspect in a crime dubbed the Big Bitcoin Heist.

I think I'd regret fleeing too if I got caught. It's not a crime to escape from prison in Iceland? Good to know.

Yeah I had to do a double take on that. Pretty ridiculous, but hey, it seems to work.

But yeah, I hope he talks. It would be interesting if the stolen equipment ends up on a farm somewhere. If they acquired such a large stash, it's likely they sold in bulk. I acknowledge that that doesn't rule out resellers and distributors and such, but this case would be way more interesting if there were a conspiracy involved.

I agree. It would be interesting as how he dispose those hardware gear. Who bought it from him? Is he into something like a gang who targets everything related to crypto? Who are the people involved? How many? There are so many questions that needs to be answer, and damn that escape? Just wow. He may be a Legend soon in the cryptoverse. LOL. I also surprised that escaping in prison is not a crime in Iceland? That ridiculous specially for American. Maybe that's one factor why Iceland has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

I try to check and look for updates regarding this heist and there was one article circulating that the stolen hardware might be in China.

If the news is true, its interesting how the machine was able to get out of Iceland and found on the other corner of the globe. The drama deeper as authorities in both countries are still investigating further. If they can really see missing link between Iceland and China, then someone should be put to jail to send message across criminals trying to pull the same job.

Yeah, apparently it should be easily matched with serial numbers (though I suspect anyone worth any salt would have already filed them off). I wonder how often Icelandic police get to work with Chinese police, they must surely appreciate the chance for something a bit different (silver lining, eh?).

Funny how this becomes the headline. What else was he supposed to do. Not regret? Although I'm told Icelandic prisons are quite... comfortable. Probably tens time more than homes I'm used to staying in! Be interesting to see how much was eventually mined from them stolen gear. Shouldn't have been worth the trouble.

he says that he is sorry, but this is something that everyone who escapes from prison say, he is saying this probably so that he is not transferred to some more secure and severe prison, but he has his reasons to escape the prison, no one can to be able to live in a prison... Now he need to tell how he managed to escape the prison and need the news channels to continue following this story to know how he escaped from prison


China, the Chinese are well known for selling pirate equipment and Chinese governments are struggling against bitcoin, so why take China?

Some of those Scandinavian countries are very strange. I watched a documentary about the police in Norway and they actually patrol the streets unarmed and very rarely have to even defend themselves. 90% of their encounters ends up with the suspects giving up instantly or right after getting pepper sprayed.
Their prisons are also something else. Prisoners are allowed to have a computer and a TV and they even have desks and other furniture.
While being locked up sucks, it can suck much less if you're doing time in these conditions.

It's not really that strange. In most cases Scandinavian countries are the most peaceful and wealthy countries per ratio. If you have to deal with less scum, police departments don't require to carry a firearm; pepper spray or a taser is sufficient enough in case they have to deal with criminals and whatnot.

I think the more comfort (of course with limitations) you offer inmates, the higher the chances are that they are coming back into society with a more postive attitude. I have even read about how there are programs they can follow to directly after their release start working to sustain themselves. It's a smart system set up to prevent future problems with the same individuals. It requires an initial investment, but the long term pays off, which is their only objective.
