 I've been mining alt-coins for awhile and I'd like to trade some of them in for the more stable bitcoin. What's the easiest way to trade coins like this?

BTC-e most likely. Whatever you do - don't look at the chat window. I did that one time and blood inexplicably poured from both ears. Would not recommend.

If one of the more prominent coins, BTC-E. Otherwise, you may be stuck with Cryptsy or something.

Crypto-Trade (https://crypto-trade.com/) is getting better reviews than BTC-e. I use them and have not had a problem.

I checked them out at some point but liquidity was very much inadequate. What is volume like now? How does it compare?

I've used both btc-e and cryptsy so far, both my coins deposit and withdrawals got executed within half an hour and I haven't had any issues...anyway I would recommend btc-e only for coin-coin exchange, tried to load some money on it without success, and even received an answer from their support team which looked like it was written by a twelve years old brat.

with any of these do you have to hook a bank account up for coin to coin trades?

with none of them (btc-e and cryptsy)

Not necessary, but I would be interested if you need to be validated before you can withdraw the coins... I know at MtGox you must now...

with both btc-e and cryptsy you don't need any verification, neither to trade, nor to deposit/withdraw (coins)

Bitfinex has a good ltc exchange, and offers leveraged trading for ltc and btc as well as lending/borrowing exchange

I've had success on Bter, Cryptsy, Vircurex, and BTC-e though a couple times strange things happened on Vircurex and Cryptsy that required contacting support. Both were quickly resolved though. Haven't yet tried Crypto-trade, Vault of Satoshi, Cryptonit, MCXNow - this is gone right?, Bitfinex, Kraken, upbit, Coins-e, etc, etc.

I wouldn't opt for BTC-e. I would go for Cryptsy. I would atleast go for an exchange you trust.

Reasons why I stopped using BTC-e
 - Withdrawl of Litecoin went up to 0.5 LTC which is outrageous.
 - Somebody I know got ripped on BTC-e. Didn't get a withdrawl confirmation mail when they stole his money. Changed his passwords regularly, different mail and btc-e passwords. BTC-e replied to his support call by blocking his account with no answer. The reaction gives a strong sense of BTC-e not caring about their customers.

Cryptsy on the other hand has the top notch support. I've raised multiple calls from LKY addresses not being generated to order cancelations that had delays.
They have given me in depth information on the situation and have resolved all tickets to satisfaction. They do have issues due to the growing amount of customers and trade volumes.
