Title: phpCOIN
Post by: lightman on August 13, 2011, 08:47:19 PM
Re: [Pre Alpha] PHPCoin https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28801.0

phpCOIN is a trademark of the https://www.phpcoin.com software which is currently owned and operated by Tecnology Services RPVW S.L. in Spain.

Any use of this name in association with some other software may lead to trademark violations.

Follow the link I posted to the notification of the project started by BCEmporium

I'm starting a new project to go GPL OpenSource, I named it PHPCoin.

Can you, in a nutshell, explain what relationship your project has to bitcoin?

It looks like some CMS or somthing.

I have no relation to bitcoin - I am merely suggesting that the project developer choose another name for his project other than PHPCoin to avoid any unpleasantness :)

I ma sure you would be equally irritated if you had been involved with a project for over 6 years, and then found someone had stolen the name for a totally unrelated project !

I am afraid you are incorrect. phpCOIN is owned by an EU member state registered limited company and comes under EU IP/trademark/copyright legislation.

I have no wish to enter into a legal argument here - that job is for lawyers - I thought a quiet heads-up would have sufficed to any reasonable and ethical developer, but unfortunately, this forum would not allow me to PM or mail the member involved without making a post etc etc.

Matthew, you are, of course, entirely correct about everything you say (and I appreciate you taking the time to answer at length).

Since we seem to have degenerated into blatant rudeness as illustrated by the post above, I see little point in continuing this dialogue.

Wishing bitcoin, BCEmporium and all the developers out there every success with their respected projects.

Kindest regards
lightman

I wasn't being rude to anyone a part of Bitcoin community, it was towards the owners of phpcoin.com.
Their script has long since died, and I don't see anyone attempting to go after others who use a similar name.

Even when PayPal goes after someone, they just request that the domain expire.

Ah, I get it.

Well, you may still end up naming the project similarly; but it'll be up to SEO and good marketing to make certain that users can find it and don't accidentally arrive at the other URL until such a date that it expires and ca be taken over.

As for the newbie stuff, it's not really that long in the salt mines to get enough cred to rise out of the subforum and get into the rest of the community. A day or so for dedicated individuals, I'm sure. :)

Thank you very much. I AM one of the current owners of  phpCOIN :)

The script is still very active, being supported and distributed. We suffered a setback when the previous developer passed away suddenly from cancer about 12 months ago, but are in negotiations with several new developers who have expressed an interest to take the project forward.

Since I am not actually a member of the bitcoin community, I guess you can be as rude to me as you like ! Its OK, I have broad shoulders  :D

Well seeing how phpCOIN is still active (as by the post above) I take back what I said.
Sorry to hear about one of your developers passing away.

If you'd like, I'm about to make an "About US" page which will have what my site is...and I can have a link back to your site?
Maybe saying "This site is in no way affiliated with https://www.phpcoin.com (https://www.phpcoin.com)."

NothinG, you must have read my mind :)

I was about to ask you if you minded if I did exactly the same thing in the announcements section of the main phpCOIN site !!

I think that reciprocal announcements would amicably and ethically put this to bed if you are in agreement ?

I have no problem doing a bit of advertising  for your software and phpco.in on the phpcoin.com site if you send me a description of what it does and any links you would like to include.

I can add anything you want to the news item after the disclaimer.

I agree :)
https://www.phpco.in/

Also, when you Login it shows (a little bit smaller) at the bottom left.

It's what everyone fears the most...an e-Wallet for Bitcoins.

Pretty much there are only going to be two pages.
https://www.phpco.in/
and
https://www.phpco.in/mobile which will allow an easier use when on a phone.
