Title: Stainless steel bitcoin cold storage wallets
Post by: coldcoins on December 18, 2013, 12:15:40 AM
Hey everyone. Just thought I'd introduce you to my new little venture. We've created an awesome product for everyone holding on to coins for the long term. Stainless steel bitcoin cold storage wallets that are laser etched and fireproof, almost indestructible. We think the pricing is on point and hopefully you love them as much as I do! Feedback (and orders) is appreciated.

Hi demonmaestro!

We received your order.  Thanks!  Could you please shoot us an email to hello@coldcoins.co so we can get your order finished up?  We had a slight integration issue with Coinbase not redirecting to our final order page which has now been fixed.

Thanks again,

Just went over the site. even more interested!

Will you make these with just the public key, and a second with both? so I can carry a deposit card?

Hi takagari,

Eventually we will be offering other packages and combinations.  For now just to get our name out there, we are sticking with the public/private combo cards.

Sent you a message about getting custom back's done. Could see these being great for resale locally here :)

Would be cool if you did the wallet QR code on one and than maybe made three small ones with an armory broken up key :)

I think it's a really cool idea, but I don't quite understand how to use BIP38 Security yet.  Can you point me to an easy-to-understand walkthrough?

Please update when you make the ones with just QR code and pub key. Too much trust to place into a new user with a template website. Also, are you ok with escrow?

We will be adding additional products soon similar to what you are asking about.  Yes we used a template.   Our current customers will be posting their experience with us once they have received their orders so if you want to wait for our trust level to go up before placing an order that's totally ok!

I'm also very interested!  More so if, as has already been suggested numerous times, you had a public key only option.

I'll likely place an order anyways!   ;D

P.S.  I see it says the lead time is 10 days, is the accurate for right now?  Like if I placed an order in the next 15 minutes what are the chances of getting it before X-mas delivered to Michigan, USA.

Thanks!

Alrighty, I placed an order… let's see how this goes.

P.S.  The form where you submit your addresses didn't initially work for me (Safari 6.1), but after I reloaded the page everything seemed to work.  If that caused any problems, please let me know!

Sounds good.
However, don't like the idea of a public and private key on the same card. Also, would you do this for LTC as well?

When you fill out the form for what is on the card, you could probably put an LTC addresses, I'm guessing whatever they use to make the QR codes doesn't care what kind of address it is.

Cold storage is a term used to describe a wallet that has been created to keep your btc or ltc offline to prevent theft.  Ideally this wallet address is also created offline and passphrase encrypted using BIP38.  Good wallets can create this type key pair for you.  We're updating our website tonight and through tomorrow with a how-to along with a few new products.  Two examples are below.

bitaddress.org
liteaddress.org

We're also adding a blog today to give updated.

Hello,

I ordered some wallets on the 18th and sent a support ticket 5 days ago with a question, but haven't heard back yet. I was just wondering how long until after the order that we should expect the cards to be created and delivered?
Thank you

You might be thinking, "Can't you steal our coins if we provide you our privates keys?" Well, yes we could (though we wouldn't) which is why we ask you to encrypt your private key using BIP38 passphrase protection. Most software wallets support this feature. Click HERE (https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0038.mediawiki) for more information on BIP38. It's important that any physical wallet be protected this way.

I agree, but I know it's considerably more than $30.  Considering at least 3 of us ordered at @$50 each… but they aren't talking here or on Reddit.  I think if they are scamming they would be trying to get as much business as possible before jetting.  So, unless Reddit brought them a ton of initial offers, I think they are maybe just getting the process sorted out.  That... or working on cracking all our encrypted private keys.    :P

Yeah, sorry, demonmaestro.  They had a lot of complaining on their Reddit post, so they lowered the initial offering from 10 to 5.  If it was 10 when I went to buy them, I would have got 10.  They look cool, and I like the idea of a metal cold wallet.  I might not ever use it for my own coins, but I could see giving it to friends to get them interested in BTC.

Now we just have to hope that these guys are still around.  ;D

Title: Re: Stainless steel bitcoin cold storage wallets

They initially were selling them 10 for $100 but then changed to 5 for $50.  Seems like such a small amount for a scam but I guess if they had 100 orders you never know.  Also it is Christmas time, but why hasn't anyone received even a reply in over 10 days?

Hope they are just a bit behind. I was looking forward to giving these out as gifts to a couple friends who have shown interest in bitcoin

Yeah, I checked everything (WHOIS) out, but for such a trivial amount of BTC I wasn't terribly worried.  I'm still going to give them time before I go calling anyone a scammer or anything like that.  ;D

I continue to have hope, only because the product is such a good idea and yet relatively simple to make -- they could make so much more money by actually making the product rather than just taking a few orders and bailing. But I've been wrong before. If they don't come through, maybe I'll just figure out how to do this myself.

Title: Re: Stainless steel bitcoin cold storage wallets

You're right, I feel like they could make a lot more money by having a real product.  It's a shame too if it turns out to be fake, since the product looks pretty cool and I was excited to get them and hand them out to people.  I guess time will tell... coming up on 2 weeks with no word.

Per the website:

We will be issuing refunds starting January 10th due to low demand and issues with our engraving process.

Too bad, seemed like a cool idea.

Title: Re: Stainless steel bitcoin cold storage wallets

The only reason they had "low demand" is they didn't keep their reddit post alive and they didn't respond here frequently enough to keep it visible.

Too bad, hopefully someone else will move in and make this happen.

Hey guys!

We are Crypto Cards, and we have been offering a similar product for about a month now. Coldcoins actually registered their site 24 hours after our first reddit post, so maybe they liked our idea a little to much;)

Anyways, it's to bad they have decided to close up shop! We would like to offer those who placed orders for Coldcoins a generous discount on any of our products. Send us a message via our contact page on our site, and we'll hook you up!

As I'm sure you're all wondering "how do we know you're not going to close up shop to?". We'll, we have actually been processing and shipping orders to happy customers since day one! (if you're a customer thats already received your order, make a post! We'd love to hear from you, and I'm sure everyone else would to!).

To ensure a situation like this didn't happen, we did a decent amount of testing of both materials and printing processes before bringing the product to market.

check out our site at www.crypto-cards.com . If you placed an order for Coldcoins, don't forget to get in contact with us for a sweet discount!

Thought I would add to this post again for those who missed my last reply. You've probably seen our posts here and on reddit over the past month. We've been offering a similar product (and shipping it!) and started about the same time as these guys. They actually registered their domain 24 hours after our first reddit post, so maybe they saw an opportunity! Who knows. Anyways, we have been offering a generous discount to those who attempted to purchase from cold cards but were left empty handed. If you were a coldcoins customer, send me a PM and we'll hook you up

We've shipped decent number of cards since we got started about a month ago. We will make an official post regarding this offer next week, we are just waiting for our customers from this forum to receive their orders before doing so, just to avoid any " what if you run away to" worries.

shoot me a PM with any questions!

Hey zolace, no we do not offer escrow, as we're an ecommerce site, not just a forum member here. With the amount of orders we have received in our time since launch, it would be crazy to handle! We are new to the bittalk community, but have already shipped many orders. We launched our product after about a month of research, and on the day after we launched, this coldcoin site was registered, and started advertising with photoshopped images of their cards. Im assuming they just saw our idea and decided to give it a shot, but who knows! As for the "not enough demand" reasoning, unless they had expectations that were way to high, we've found the demand to be more than expected.

We've defiantly received a lot of interest from the community, but a lot of scepticism as well after this coldcoins incident. That is why we are waiting until people from this community have received their orders before we advertise much more. I placed an order with Crypto Cards via their website last week.  Once the cards have arrived, I'll be sure to let everyone here know. :)

Is the lettering laser etched or is it printed?

Edit: Sorry I need to read more before I question.

I bought the first PVC bitcoin card I saw for sale on eBay ($3.99 I think). Its nothing special in terms of design but I thought it was a cool thing. There's no way I was going to let them have any access to my private key though, so I generated a keypair at bitaddress.org and just sent them the address. I asked them to send me one of their hologram stickers with the card. I printed a QR of my private key myself (on cardstock) and applied it so the blank side of the QR code was on the adhesive part of the sticker (the QR code itself facing the card).
I think cards like this are an awesome idea-but they present a very obvious security concern. How doesthe BIP 38 security work?

Wood carved wallets available soon, less indestructible perhaps, but appropriate for a broarder range of styles... and coins.

I would be wary of any newbie selling could be the same people and scam, do they offer escrow?

Keep checking the forums over the next few days, I'm sure people will start reporting their orders!

First, let me clarify, I am not the “coldcoins” guy you’re speaking of. I’m just an unfortunate predecessor of the same name. Someone who has invested a considerable amount into a creating a remarkably unique cold storage collectible, under the ColdCoin name, before this unfortunate experiment.

I find it interesting that Chris Sweeting registered his domain a day after you announced your product.

I also find it interesting that he announced his product a few hours later. Just enough time to throw up a nice website and copy. Not long enough, however , to get manufacturing worked out or to even create a prototype (exceptions noted).

I find it interesting, yet likely a true coincidence, that he registered the coldcoins.co domain 6 days AFTER I registered the www.coldco.in .

And lastly (but not finally), I find it interesting that he registered the “coldcoins” username here just hours after I registered “ColdCoin.”

I presume he had intentions of creating a trusted and sustainable venture. I also figure the simplest explanation is he got ahead of himself and discovered unforeseen challenges after he had orders lining up. I don’t know. I made that up.

I find it disappointing though, that rather than owning the problem and making it right, right away, he appears to have disappeared from the forums and left a lot of people in the in the dark who still want to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Unfortunately, I discovered his product announcement while our first edition physical coins were well into the minting process. I already wrote the mint a hefty check (they declined to accept bitcoin).

I was pretty bummed to share the name, but I just figured the free market would work it out. I guess it has, but I’ll be answering to his reputation for quite some time.

Really I just wanted to say 2 things… no 3.

1)   I’m not him, he’s not me. 2 similar yet very different products.
2)   If you have ordered a metal card from coldcoins.co, and have not received a refund, I will give you one of our first run cold storage coins. Free. Just PM me your receipt info and I’ll take care of you (i hope there are very very few of you ;-)
3)   Once again, we are coldco.in . No affiliation whatsoever with coldcoins.co

It goes a long way to give away review units to trusted forum members.

He didn't just leave people in the dark -- he took their money, so that's theft.

I'm interested in seeing what you've come up with, and have sent you a pm.

Random user registers on this forum then announces site and project then takes money and lastly doesn't respond/refund.

People please use escrow if there are trust issues with new members.

You're right, it is pretty stupid.  It was my first transaction with bitcoin, that wasn't an obviously real company (I've bought stuff through legit companies before). I definitely wouldn't have done it without escrow if it was a large sum of money.  I can deal with losing $50, but it's just annoying getting ripped off by scumbag scammers.
