ASICs promote centralization because you need specialized costly hardware to be able to acquire them (leading to only capitalists acquiring them), unlike GPUs which are common household devices (you have a PC? you have a GPU). The more centralized a network is, the less secure it is (51% attack). So ASIC based algos are actually inherently less secure than GPU-only based algos.

But to have a feet in the social network space you need network effect to grasp the market space.
