Title: Will Casascius coins lose its BTC value as prices increase?
Post by: vesper39 on December 23, 2013, 10:00:18 AM
Casascius coins have always had a pretty hefty premium above its sticker price. Do you guys think the premium will drop as the price per bitcoin with USD increases?

1 BTC coin roughly went for around 1.3-1.4 btc each. Once bitcoin reaches 5k+ will people really be willing to pay 1500-$2000 additional for the coin? Or do you think 1BTC coins will drop in value to something like 1.05BTC etc?

If the latter is true, wouldn't it be best to exchange/sell casascius coins if you are long term holder? Especially if you own larger coins like 10BTC/25BTC versions.

So I see someone asking 37 BTC for a 25 BTC coin but are they getting it? What prices have these sold for previously? This market is so small that finding the price is really tough still. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=214589.20

vesper39 I think your empirical analysis is correct
Not really into collectables but why would somebody pay such a high premium?
I would say get rid of them ASAP if you value BTC more than FIAT, otherwise old and wait for BTC to increase in value and make profit that way.

Then on the other hand, if casascius really never makes any more coins, the value could shoot up as well.  ::)

I hope you realize the markup wasn't a percentage

It sort of is though. Casascius never decreased the coin price often enough to match the increasing market price of bitcoins. And since these coins were always priced in BTC, it is possible they will stay in value relative to BTC, not USD.

Its funny you ask that, because the dude selling physical litecoins has more than a double-value markup.  I always thought Casascius marked up his items pretty fairly since he was selling them basically "at cost" (value of the load on the bitcoin).  The Litecoin dude is just raping people to death for profit.

I paid 115 LTC for the 3 piece coin set (25, 10 5) when LTC was valued at $3 - Is he still charging 115 LTC for that set ?

I think it will adjust as Bitcoin get higher, it can't always be 25% to 50% premium. The fact that Casascius stopped selling them (For now) may make them worth more tho.

It was probably "at cost" when market value was $20, but that is no longer the case now. So definitely not sure how their values will hold up long term as btc prices continue to grow.

Lealana price is high but the quality is high also, with the presentation box, the high quality hologram, the fact they are fine silver .999, the price to make the die for minting the coins. All in all if you add up all those cost, it's not that bad of a price.
