Title: Sun Dog
Post by: Phinnaeus Gage on December 23, 2013, 11:40:58 PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog

Just learnt the name of the phenomenon I witnessed earlier. I photographed it, but don't believe I was able to capture all three suns in one frame due to its width. The other problem I have is that I can't seem to locate the cord to the camera to download the images. Surely, I didn't leave it in some hotel room during my epic Road Trip.

Never seen that, that's cool.

Also card readers come in handy, lot easier to pop the card in that try to dig out cables. I got drawers full of cables, don't even know what half go to anymore.

First time ever I've seen one of this sun dog which is quite fascinating and very rare to see this kind of thing. This is really one of a kind and amazing phenomenon!

Boy, I didn't know such an animal existed. Thanks, BB, even though I would still have to purchase one and/or the other if I can't find the cord.

They're cool, don't stare too long though. Usually see them a number of times a year up here in Canada.

Sundogs usually form in the icy crystals of high-altitude clouds. We get them before rainy weather washes through. Even better is when the high thunderstorm cloud cells are growing into the Stratosphere and as their anvils are carried to us by the winds aloft we get the prettiest iridescence! The sundogs formed then makes for one lovely, but inaccurate tornado warning :D

I live 50+ miles due west of Chicago, seeing it from here, but it was seen throughout most of the northern part of Illinois and possible beyond: http://geneva.patch.com/groups/around-town/p/rare-double-rainbow-around-355pm-monday
