Title: What's better, a 5970 or 6990?
Post by: Mousepotato on August 22, 2011, 04:38:19 PM
I think I might get a dual GPU card next and I'm wondering what's better for overall use (mining, gaming, resale): a 5970 or 6990?  I'm looking at the HW comparison chart and it looks like the 5970 has more stream processors... 3200 vs. 3072, so theoretically it would be marginally better for mining.  They're both around the same price, when you can find them.  Resale looks to be about the same too, more or less.  Or should I just wait for the dual GPU HD 7XXX? Help me decide!

It is a hard decision I suppose.

6990 uses less power than the 5970.

How long are the 7k series from around the corner? If it is real soon, even then, it might take a while for the x2 of 7k series to come out?

I thought the 5970s use about 80w or so less power than the 6990s?  At least that's how they're listed at the HW comparison chart (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison).  As far as the top tier HD 7K series, I think I remember reading that we won't see it til late 1Q or early 2Q 2012.

Clearly the 6990 truly is a more power hungry card than the 5970.

I'd go for the 5970.

Dunno what AMD was thinking with the total cluster mess of 6000 series.

Ok, so with regard to gaming performance, is a 5970 the equiv of two 5850s or two 5870s?
