hope you used a credit card that extends the warranty more then 30 days...
the 5970 has the highest failure rate of all radeon cards pretty much.
i just cannot justify the purchase myself.

Yeah, I almost snap bought it myself, before I did the math and realized that even with $0 electricity costs and a stagnant difficulty level, it would take me 5 months to break even at the current $8 price.

And that's before you factor in the possibility of it breaking. ><

i can't really justify it.. My 5830's are good enough really,  and I'm not looking to expand. (Paid about $80 each after rebates)

If they were around $300 i'd be all over it though.

Ive been looking for these things forever. Even the used ones sell for $600-700. $500 for brand new is pretty sweet. I'll risk it. If I have problems I'll just beg AMD for some support.

They are selling on EBAY at around 7-900. Looks like I am already in profit  :-*.

I see one on ebay for around $600. With fees added in that's not much of a profit if any.

I would rather pay $500 than $600. I would also rather buy from newegg than ebay.

would probably be more appealing to me if my current hardware was paid off and bitcoin exchange rates looked better.

Right now I still have about $1,000 to go on the current hardware, I could potentially flip some stuff out and add another 1Ghash/s for about $700 after the other stuff was sold, but that would put me in the hole again at $1,700.

why are they so much?

I also checked ebay prices for doing a quick resell and I figure getting more then 600 might not happen.
And once you take out ebay/paypal fees it was not worth the hassle for me. What a headache it would be
for a person to use the card for 20 days and it breaks.. and then wants a return. Paypal would side with them

For 500 dollars and a bit of savvy shopping I could build a whole new rig and compete with a single 5970.
Plus all my eggs are not in one basket. I pretty much expect 400 dollars to get me 660 mh/s now days so
an extra 100 bucks should bring in another 5830 for a total of 990 mh/s.

If it breaks in 30 days newegg will take care of it for sure. If it breaks within 1 year AMD will probably take care of it. Talk to a manager. Tell them you spent $1000 on their products and they didnt even last 1 year. Tell them you purchased from newegg and you have the receipt. Im pretty sure they will help you.

OEM means no warranty right?  From AMD's website:

Non-Boxed Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Warranty Information
AMD's warranty on processors extends only to customers who purchased products DIRECTLY FROM AMD and does not cover products purchased from resellers. You should direct any warranty inquiries to the supplier from whom you purchased this product.

And newegg only gives you 30 days to return it.  After that if it breaks, you are screwed.
