Title: Mine XRP Ripple for free on DigitalOcean ($10 Free Credit)
Post by: stink on January 03, 2014, 09:25:29 PM
For those that dont know Ripple is funded by google so here is a quick way to get some free xrp
First Sign up here for a ripple wallet: Computingforgood.com then follow the directions to get a WCG login. To fund your wallet you need to "mine" using the program called boinc.

So for those of you who want more free XRP, I would direct you to DigitalOcean:

https://www.digitalocean.com/?refcode=af8739393201
Scroll down to the bottom and put in the promocode first!
OMGSSD10
You can sign up using your e-mail, a password, a credit card number and this promo code:
(I used a gift card, to make sure it legit)

This will get you a free $10 credit, enough to open up to 5 "droplets" for a month. I created 5 droplets to get the max XRP.

If the promo code expires check this site out for more:

http://www.retailmenot.com/s/digitalocean

Setting up a server on DigitalOcean is super easy. After you have signed up, you will be asked to create a droplet.

You will first enter a hostname, this can be whatever.
Then you'll select a size. I went with the smallest 1 CPU server, it will run for two months.
Select your region. I selected the one closest to home.
Then you will select the image, I would recommend Ubuntu 13.10 x 64.
Then you will create the droplet (it will take a minute.)

Your username (root) and password will be sent to your e-mail.

Once you have your password, you can connect to your server by clicking on the Access button and then by clicking Console Access. This will open a shell in your browser. Once you are in the shell, you have two commands to enter:

sudo apt-get install boinc-client
boinccmd --project_attach http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ <your weak account key here, no angle brackets>

The URL in the above command will not be underlined when you enter the command in the shell.

Note: nothing obvious will happen when you enter the second command.
Now type the word "TOP" you should see Boinc running now... Enjoy

As always, tips are appreciated and good luck:

Many thanks for the information. A difficult question to answer but approximately how many XRP a day does it actually give you per 1CPU, 2CPU or 4CPU droplet?

I am willing to try this for 5x 2cpu droplets. It will cost $600 per year and if 20-40XRP are received a day it should bring about 7300-14600XRP a year. That is worth around $146-$292 at todays rate. So an annual loss of between $454-$308, however, prices of XRP can go up as well as down. I will give this a try.

Many thanks for the know-how :)

Please can someone explain what the latest way is to 'mine' or obtain XRP? Can DigitalOcean servers still be used? If so, are they viable to use v/s the XRP gained?

Many Thanks

No, they stopped the Computing for Good giveaway. The Computing for Good website says this

Thank you for the reply. So now that computingforgood has closed, how does someone use a computer or server to obtain/mine XRP?

You don't

You buy them on an exchange.. even when this worked people weren't really mining them anyway, just exchanging computing power for premined coins.

Thank you for the reply. What about the other billions of XRP that have not been released yet? How will RippleLabs distribute them?

I don't know for sure but I would have to guess that they will end up selling them. They are not doing this for charity.

..There is a reason why they still own ~70% of the supply. (correct me if I am wrong, 30 billion are publicy traded, 70 billion are held by ripple labs)

~30 billion are held outside of Ripple Labs. Sizable founder allocations exist which are controlled by lockup agreements. Latest distribution stats are available here (https://www.ripplelabs.com/xrp-distribution/).

Thank you newuser01 and hypostatization for the replies.

Ok, so if I have this understood correctly, 70B XRP are with the developers/investors and 30B XRP are with 'others'. And as it stands, the only way for anyone to have XRP added to their wallet is by purchasing them from someone who is selling them.

So they will not be 'giving' them away or 'donating' a sizeable chunk to XRP wallet holders?

Thank you for the clarification, most appreciated.

I am uncertain if anyone from the group of early Ripple Labs investors overlaps with the founders. Ripple Labs holds the ~70 billion, and have a sizable and rapidly growing team (https://www.ripplelabs.com/team/) (beyond just software engineers).

Ripple Labs had communicated they were using XRP forgivable loans to incent partners to join the network. Banks are not interested in holding XRP, as a general proposition. At the moment, I believe they have no immediate plans to distribute large sums of additional XRP.

XRP can be purchased on the market/from sellers, granted by the CrossCoin (http://www.crosscoinventures.com/) startup accelerator, or obtained through developer bounties. Giveaways are often sponsored by the community and services on the Ripple network. xrptalk.org (https://xrptalk.org/) just added a nice little basic micro-tipping feature.

Here is some perspective on the difficulty of mass distribution of XRP/STR (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=875650.msg9676399#msg9676399).
