Title: Help me ! How to build a PC for bitcoin mine ?
Post by: betcialist on August 28, 2011, 02:07:16 PM
:)Hi everyone, I'm a newbie, I am very pleased to know all of you. I've just known about bitcoin. I've already got a PC as :
- Mainboard : Asus M2N68-CM
- CPU : AMD Athlon 64X2 4800+ ( 2.5Ghz X 2 )
- GPU : Asus EAH5570 SILENT/DI/1GD2
- HDD : Seagate Barracuda 320 GB
- Power Supply : Cooler Master 450W
- Ram DDR2 : 2GB - 800 Mhz

Please advise me can I start to mine bitcoin with that PC ? How much I can earn a month with that GPU ?
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks & best regards, :)

Betcialist

well you could..  but according to this: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
You'll only get about 60MegaHashes/second

I haven't done an accurate calculation - but I think you'll take about 1 Month to generate 1 bitcoin if difficulty stays around what it is now. (joining a mining pool obviously)

That motherboard has a pci-e slot.. so you might consider throwing in a new ATI graphics card.

Yeah I wouldnt worry about mining bitcoins unless you get two really good cards in crossfire.  Making 1 bitcoin a month is pretty worthless.  You need to get two 6970s or similar to make 1 bitcoin every 3 days or so to make it worth it these days.

You would need a another card to get more Mhashes/s

I'd say replace that old card with a cheap 58xx card. I'm pretty sure if you added another card to the mobo your psu couldn't handle it.

As said above, don't even think about it until you change your video card with a 5XXX series card at least.  If you are willing to buy a larger power supply, this card will get you 10-12 coins a month in a pool.

Get yourself a 6950 and at least 600W PSU and you should be good. If this is a standalone rig, then 500W should be good.

Yeah the 68 series are nice, 6990s are beast but tough to get and expensive.  Sure you can find a good one on ebay for cheap.

Also.. do your calculations as to electricity costs etc.
Many already say that it's highly dubious as to whether a card will pay for itself in any reasonable timeframe.

Spending the same amount of money on a bitcoin exchange directly for coins can indeed make more sense.
Not to put you off mining totally though.. personally I think it's nice to have at least a basic mining capability - so long as you're aware of the costs and that it's just a different way of speculating.

+1 to this. Unless you have a small server farm or datacenter, the costs of mining coins by hand now are not worth the amount of electricity you're paying for the privilege.

I'd honestly suggest waiting to find a 58xx card or buying used. At the current prices the 6xxx cards just don't really compare.

Thank you for your comment ! Is there anybody using laptop with ATI 5830 as HP ENVY 15 INTEL CORE I7 720QM for mining ? I think laptop always consumes less power than desktop, but how is about performance of laptop's ATI 5830 VGA ?

No laptop will be worth mining bitcoins, period.  It just doesnt work.  You need a strong card that balances energy efficiency and kicks butt in mining with high hash rates.  It is still tough to pay for a good card now, and have bitcoin mining pay for it anytime soon.  Electricity and at 8 bux a coin, not helping much.

THe 6990 is out of the question, I have one, it cost me 730 bux, I ordered the second one at the same time and that was over two months ago, you cant get them at all, end of sepetmber there saying now, or ebay for 850 you can get a used one, but I dont think there worth it.  I dont think mining at all is worth it now, not at 4 bux a coin to 8 bux a coin,  It has to go above that unless your electricity is free, if you dont pay for electricity then it might be worth spending 400 on a card but not 800, unless you will also use it for gaming, not just minining, it will take a long time to pay a 800 dollar card off with bitcoins, if ever.

Donīt forget that you will need at least 600W if you plan to use 2 cards in the future.

Shit 1000 watt with two cards if you go with some of them.  Im running two 6990s and I have to use a 1500 watt PSU.  Would be better to go with that, or the 7000 series coming out, just one of those then two of some of the other cards, but you can always have quadfire with two 6990s in the future too, if you snag one, or the 285 and get another one later for nice crossfire but you would definitely want 700 or higher, 1000 watt PSU minimum running the 6990s though for sure, seen way too many underpowered rigs or cheap powered rigs have major issues with these new hot powerful but electricity eating monsters.

I would use a refurnished PC and put in as many second hand graphics cards that I can, a new one seems to be difficult for ROI :(

I say go for the 6870.  I don't know where people get their prices, but if you find a deal like http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3293164 (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3293164) you can get a 6870 for $150 after rebate, and even sell the free games for another $25 back or so.  I'm getting 290 MH/s with my 6870, and it only draws about 140 W (according to my kill-a-watt) above my baseline system, so you could probably even do two of them on your power supply.

Based on that 290Mh/s at $150, that's 1.933 Mh/s/$, and more than 2.07 Mh/s/watt, which is just about as good as I've seen for any card combination if you just want to do some basic mining with a regular PC.

Everybody else - please let me know if you're actually getting super deals on used 5XXX cards, I just haven't been able to find them.

Well the ATI 6990 I have gets 800 MH/s and with two I get 1640 MH/s which is really where you need to be to make bitcoins right now with the difficulty but electricity is tough, if you got free electricity then the 6990 is worth it for the hash rate alone and its only going to get harder to make bitcoins.  If on a budget then u have no choice but to go lower.  The 6950 gets 450MH/s  and 6870 gets 340 MH/s.  I personally would not go any lower then that and or just buy the best highest MH/s Card you can get.   This website actually helps alot, and will show what you can expect from a card   https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

Well 6990 is sure good but how long do you expect to break even? What is the ROI?

Well I started about a year ago so I am good for mine, but yeah as prices are now, it would take a while, but you still have a bad ass card, gaming and resell value in the card plus there hard to get, so even months down the road you could still get a good price back for the card if need be.  But there are ones less price vs mining that might get payed off, but still a long ass time for even 300 bux in bitcoins.
