Title: [ANNOUNCEMENT] Ixcoin 0.3.24.2 SECOND mandatory update released
Post by: Nasakioto on August 29, 2011, 05:18:09 AM
We've made some changes to Ixcoin addressing issues raised since its release. This is a compulsory update otherwise your Ixcoin client will not communicate with other updated nodes after Sep 1rst 2011. The blockchain remains intact.

Upgrade to 0.3.24.2 as previous update 0.3.24.1 is now obsolete as is 0.3.24.

What's new in 0.3.24.2?

  • New Difficulty Retargeting Algorithm

A new difficulty adjustment algorithm will activate on block 20055. The current block count is 19968 so we should hit this count in about ~2 weeks. After that, difficulty retargets every 144 blocks (i.e. every 24 hours) with max increments of 10% and max decrements at 400% (like Solidcoin). The aim is to achieve a much more consistent block rate. (commit (https://github.com/ixcoin/ixcoin/commit/df30a348d0f914412a5a248f282afdd7ade95dbd))  (commit2 (https://github.com/ixcoin/ixcoin/commit/a489c4b0a4bf57a4c8807995cf806fd666760135))

  • New Peering Marker

On Sept 1rst 2011 at 00:12:51 UTC (in under a week), the new client will switch over to a new Ixcoin-specific pchMessageStart peering marker from the original Bitcoin marker. This change was recommended by a few although we haven't had reports of any issues with this yet. Better safe than sorry. The updated Ixcoin nodes will not be able to communicate with non-updated Ixcoin clients after that date. This will require a restart of the Ixcoin client on or after Sept 1rst. (commit (https://github.com/ixcoin/ixcoin/commit/df30a348d0f914412a5a248f282afdd7ade95dbd))

  •   Other Miscellaneous Changes

    * Blockchain lockin at block 19947 (commit (https://github.com/ixcoin/ixcoin/commit/df30a348d0f914412a5a248f282afdd7ade95dbd))
    * Hard limit total Ixcoins to 21M (commit (https://github.com/ixcoin/ixcoin/commit/9a19b3fc712c5951b87cd3eba4f0be4e4791ae55))
    * Fix minimized tray icon issue in Windows distro
    * Switched back to lfnet.org IRC instead of Freednode. Now using 10 channels #ixcoin00-09 (commit (https://github.com/ixcoin/ixcoin/commit/d8808bdf8eb109a25389b1745069955115c2940a))
    * Bitcoin addresses are now detected as invalid Ixcoin addresses (commit (https://github.com/ixcoin/ixcoin/commit/1adddc0b6d57f7431611322df8df1a33f79d7727))
    * Relay threshold now at block 19947
    * MacOS icon updated to Ixcoin

Where can I get the source?

Apologies for the multiple updates.

If you are upgrading from 0.3.24.1 and you are compiling from source, you can just update your main.cpp as the other updates are not essential.

There's also an upcoming release 0.3.25 of Ixcoin based on the bitcoin 0.3.25 release. This upgrade however will not be mandatory like this one.

Thanks.

Thomas.

Dude you're such a loser.  You don't know what you're doing and can't get it right first time.

What on earth is a 400% decrease of something that is necessarily positive, b.t.w.?

Waiting for the 3, and then 4, leading zeros of the exchange rate vs. BTC; it's only a matter of time...

Cut the guy a little slack. Stealing code from someone else's project is really hard...

If you can't figure out Edit > Copy and Edit > Paste, that is.

That wasn't a mistake, that was just him thinking the computer would accept his wishful thinking that ixcoin's block chain actually got to 130,000 blocks...

Or maybe he just got confused between how many blocks he pre-mined, and how many coins he pre-mined, and thought that was just fine...

As far as the fact he manages to screw up the difference between "is this true" and "is this false" ... Come on, truth has GOT to be hard for someone who starts a block chain with the sole intent of giving himself more coins than anyone else, so we can't really claim to be surprised, right?

Could anyone tell me why is there a need to limit decreases in difficulty? Why not just let it adjust freely?

The SolidCoin author felt it was a good idea. ixcoins is simply inheriting this because the ixcoins author did not have the ability to solve the retarget problem in ixcoin on his own. The difficulty mechanism belongs to SolidCoin, so check the SolidCoin thread for the rational and feedback.

That's exactly what he did, yeah. And he actually didn't get it right the first time, which is why there is a SECOND mandatory update release.

See, if ixcoins can't difficulty-adjust to something useful for months, his pre-mined 580,000 coins are going to be completely worthless. Who's going to buy them when we get to the point where transaction confirmations take six weeks? For all his talk about how this was to be a "direct" Bitcoin fork he was really quick to grab from another fork and change the fundamental rules when things went sour for him.

I'll also remind everyone that it comes as no surprise that he can't maintain his code by himself. If he knew what he was doing, he wouldn't have pre-mined thousands of blocks. He would have simply edited the code to put a million coins in block 1, and however many (96 I think?) in every block after. Of course then it would be much easier to see if the transactions were really for bounties as he later tried to claim.

Actually it was inherited from Bitcoin. But I guess you are right that I won't get an answer here.

Yeah, my bad. Crossed wires for a moment and thought you meant the timing in adjustments, not the limit for adjustments.

Coinotron:

Code:

I wonder what Thomas would do if the same miners that pumped up his difficulty beyond reach showed up around block 20055 and ignored what he imagines to be a "compulsory" update, forcing the blockchain down a different path.  Could make for a fun split...

Wow. That may be the first good reason I've seen to consider a mining contract!

well even if it is copy paste, glad you are updating the client. Competition is a good thing even if I still have a lot of reservations over ixcoin.

Quote
Did you basically copy the solidcoin code to fix yours ? Wow :O.

so did i0coin, and i wish namecoin would do the same unless they can do the merged mining sooner, and I think BTC should do the same with the difficulty, it is a good idea. It is all open source, you are supposed to steal good ideas from open source. Yeah i wish there was more unique development but I'm not going to chastise him for stealing the difficulty algo, it was wise to do.

Quote
Could anyone tell me why is there a need to limit decreases in difficulty? Why not just let it adjust freely?

because if it gets too low, we get problems with with the i0coin release.

Apologies for the multiple updates
.

I would rather have 100 updates than a broken client. though it would be nice if somehow the clients can tell they are out of date and update themselves. people dont want to have to monitor the clients and check the forums all the time. people want to be able to go on vacation and come home and find things are still working.

yeah I still have reservations, and yeah i still think you are old miner  :D but competition is a good thing, updates are a good thing and as such i wont use this thread to attack you or ixcoin, there are more than plenty of places for me to do that. The only thing I will say is people should investigate why there is so much animosity and make up their own minds.

No, please leave the ill-thought-out parameter changes to the alternate block chains.  Most of us like BTC just the way it is, for good reason.

well this isnt the place for that debate, but tell namecoin how fun it is. their next diff change is january next freaken year, they are mining a 100k+ diff with an hash rate that calls for an under 10k diff. .

yeah yall love to claim there is a crap load of problems with this, but yall tend to put up very little in the form of a substantive debate. you are just myoptic. Wait until theri is a real challenge to btc(if their isnt already one) and when the BTC miners flee, you will wish diff changes kept up as transactions slow to a crawl. heck it already took me 1.5 hours last night to get my btc to the exchange, when my sc was there in .5hours.now what happens if half the miners left btc for some reason? electricity, hard core banning in theri countries, natural disasters, or just a good competitive coin? yeah I dont want to wait 3 days for my coins to be useful.

Dude I get all that, I can read. Everything will turn over on the block 20055. MY PROBLEM IS I HAVE NOT SEEN A BLOCK CHAIN IN 2 DAYS.
Nasakioto says the change will happen in 29 blocks.. WELL IT HAS BEEN 2 DAYS AND MY NEW CLIENT SAYS THERE ARE STILL 29 BLOCKS.

My question is will we have to wait 2 months for the change over, OR IS MY CLIENT BROKEN. And thus far I cant get anyone to answer what the average block time is right now. Just a ball park guestimate that is all I am asking for.

well at least ixcoin has a month to figure it out.

i'm going to try the old client and then I'm going to give up.

edit OLD CLIENT went up to 20027.. new client says F-U.. i'm guessing now I run the old client until block 20055? probably should make that clear as this was a head ache from hell

New Peering Marker

On Sept 1rst 2011 at 00:12:51 UTC (in under a week), the new client will switch over to a new Ixcoin-specific pchMessageStart peering marker from the original Bitcoin marker. This change was recommended by a few although we haven't had reports of any issues with this yet. Better safe than sorry. The updated Ixcoin nodes will not be able to communicate with non-updated Ixcoin clients after that date.

you have users on the new client on 20026 and you have users of the old client on 20027

I0coin was totally busted and updated their software(and had a ton of bugs for sure) but we didnt have these problems, and the best answers i get from the devs is well we are on 2026

I'm still seeing 115+ Ixcoin clients on Freenode's #ixcoin channel and only ~47 on LFNet #ixcoinxx channels, so I'm guessing they still haven't switched over. Once these switch over to the new client, the block count will increment more rapidly.

You realize mining on the old client doesn't actually do anything, right?  The new client won't recognize the chain fork made by the old client and vice-versa, so they're not hindering each other.

No, it's like mining testcoins, this will have no impact on the chain of the new client. It just counts if the exchanges etc. are supporting the new chain.

Except users on the old chain may think "oh, the problems have been fixed" and may never upgrade.

Have a _ton_ of fun as soon as someone realizes they can scam old-chain ixcoin users by sending them 100% worthless coins. To say nothing with what happens if mining on old chain picks up and more people say "Oh, well, screw this new chain" and switch back because old chain is more useful...

Are the block chains actually incompatible yet, or is it just that the two halves of the network can't communicate with each other? If they're not actually incompatible - and I can't see any reason why they should be yet because we haven't reached the 20055 threshhold - then any exchange accepting transactions on the half with the smaller hash rate (and it looks like they are on that half) is risking becoming the victim of a double-spend attack by someone that manages to transfer blocks across.

i am well aware that "old" ixcoin is even more worthless than "new" ixcoin since all of the exchanges have switched and the sole purpose of mining it is to spite Thomas and the new block chain.

I figure mining the old blockchain is a fairly effective way to prove that i would do something utterly useless rather than supporting Thomas' Ixcoin. :D

The 2 chains are incompatible... Some people think, if the old chain grows faster, they can overwrite or invalidate the new chain. That is not true, they are just mining on a dead chain ^^

"New Peering Marker

On Sept 1rst 2011 at 00:12:51 UTC (in under a week), the new client will switch over to a new Ixcoin-specific pchMessageStart peering marker from the original Bitcoin marker. This change was recommended by a few although we haven't had reports of any issues with this yet. Better safe than sorry. The updated Ixcoin nodes will not be able to communicate with non-updated Ixcoin clients after that date. This will require a restart of the Ixcoin client on or after Sept 1rst. (commit)"

I think in the upgrade from the old client to the new client that the current blockchain was preserved and coins were preserved. SO... what happens if:

1) The old blockchain is 51%+ of the combined Ixcoin network.
2) The old blockchain is mined quickly while the new blockchain lags.
3) All of the old blockchain users upgrade their client.

Presumably since they now have the new client, the most networking power, and the longest chain, then all of the others who were mining on the new client find their blockchain invalidated?

That only stops the two halves of the network from communicating directly; it doesn't prevent blocks generated on one half being valid on the other if you can transfer them over in some other way. In fact I've tested this with a pair of nodes locally and 0.3.24.2 does appear to consider the longer 20032-block chain perfectly valid, I just can't get it to propagate across the network for some reason. Something's really quite broken...

I definitely don't. I'm running 0.3.24.2 clients, they're connected to other nodes with the changes, when I pointed a 0.3.24.2 client at another node which had the 20032-block long chain it quite happily downloaded it and accepted it as the valid longest chain, and yet it still doesn't seem to have propagated to the rest of the network. There are even other nodes out there with it now; I can start a fresh 0.3.24.2 node with a clean datadir and pick up 20032 blocks.

Edit: If I'm reading the debug logs right, every IXcoin 0.3.24.1 and 0.3.24.2 nodes I'm connecting to now has 20032 blocks. It's interesting that http://bitcoinx.com/ixcoin/ still says 20029 though.
Edit 2: Oh, and if this is accurate all blocks mined and transactions confirmed on the 0.3.24.1+ branch of the fork since it split off should now be invalid and at 0 confirmations respectively. Too bad for the users on that side, eh?

This is pretty much what should happen, yes. In practice upgrading your client doesn't seem to send the blockchain to the network properly and I ended up having to give it a helping hand. It would probably have happened naturally in the end if enough people had upgraded though. (Of course, why upgrade if your transactions and mined blocks are then at risk of getting invalidated unexpectedly?)

Hm ok I was wrong, it looks like it was possible to inject an alien blockchain into the new client  ;D So he probably will change back the "messageStart" and the bad miners have helped to speed up the blockgeneration, so that 20055 is reached earlier ;-)

Hi mate, sent you this in a PM yesterday:

I deposited 72 IX to your exchange around 2 days ago.   As IX is taking sooooo long to find blocks, it looks like the address expired before the 6 confirmations were hit.

Here are the details:

Date: 31/08/2011 06:56
To: <check your pm>
Debit: -72.52465552
Net amount: -72.52465552

Would you be able to check it out when you get a spare second?

Thanks mate, much appreciated, let me know if you need any more info.

Thinking about it though, the txn got to 5 confirmations and that was block 20026, so that'd mean the 6th should have been 20027, which Oldminer appears to have screwed with (good job there by the way  ::)).  Not sure what that means for my coins.

I'm not hugely upset right now as they're worth sod all and I don't expect that to change, but if the planets align and they suddenly skyrocket in value I'll be pissed ;)

Thinking about it though, the txn got to 5 confirmations and that was block 20026, so that'd mean the 6th should have been 20027, which Oldminer appears to have screwed with (good job there by the way  ::)).

Are you retarded?

LOL shut the fuck up. lol

At least he's still committed to denying it.

Wow and just when I thought smoothie was the stupidest cunt on the forum along comes another candidate batting for the trophy...  ::)

LOL yeah i'm so stupid I've pocketed over 427 BTC total over the past 3.5 weeks of crypto-craziness lol.

That's what stupid people roll with...mega profits lol.

Oh dude.... really?

Ok, I'm backing away from this argument, I don't think I'm smart enough to keep up with this level of intellectualism.     Good work though, it takes a man of particular talents to destroy his own credibility in an argument.  Great job!

There is money involved, so this really isnt a game.
your users are going to be upset at times, and attacking them isnt the best way to deal with it.

this is a major overhaul to solidcoins, People like simon are a supporter, just by mining the damn things, DONT BE A DICK, help the guy out, we dont know what changes were made, i've got coins I sent at block 20026 and they are sitting here with 0 confirms after block 20034, seems kinda screwed up to me. But I guess you will call me names as well for wondering what is going on.

If you arent thomas, thomas should ask you to stop representing the ixcoin, cause you are giving it a bad name oldminer.

Like I said money is involved, maybe not much to you but that doesnt matter, it isnt a game, your users are going to be upset, things are changing, if you want your coin to succeed, grow a thicker skin and help your users out.

Right on Beefy.

And on that note, I'll repost my original issue (directed at doubleC) that got lost in a sea of shit for when he comes back online:

Hi doubleC, sent you this in a PM yesterday:

I deposited 72 IX to your exchange around 2 days ago.   As IX is taking sooooo long to find blocks, it looks like the address expired before the 6 confirmations were hit.

Here are the details:

Date: 31/08/2011 06:56
To: <check your pm>
Debit: -72.52465552
Net amount: -72.52465552

Would you be able to check it out when you get a spare second?

Thanks mate, much appreciated, let me know if you need any more info.

Thinking about it though, the txn got to 5 confirmations and that was block 20026, so that'd mean the 6th should have been 20027, which SOMEONE (dun dun DUN!) appears to have screwed with (good job there by the way  ::)).  Not sure what that means for my coins.

I'm not hugely upset right now as they're worth sod all and I don't expect that to change, but if the planets align and they suddenly skyrocket in value I'll be pissed ;)

Mate, Simon made the accusation that I fucked up and I responded asking him wtf he is talking about. He then responded with 'I'm not talking to you'. I then asked if he was retarded as clearly his post was directed at me by adding "nice job btw" after referencing my name. I can only assume you missed this.. Now, if that makes me a dick as you put it, then so be it. The guy didnt ask me for help, and I didnt give him any. End of story.

As regards answers to your questions about the blockchain. Ixcoin DOES have a forum of its own as you are aware. I suggest if you want your questions answered you post them there. Im sure Thomas would be more than happy to assist. Have a nice day  ;D

Well that's an easy question to answer. If you tried sending them with 0.3.24.2 after block 20026, then they could only get added to the shorter of two branches of the blockchain. When I managed to convince 0.3.24.2 that the longer chain existed at block 20032, it replaced the branch that 0.3.24.2 nodes were previously working on and any confirmations you had would have disappeared. They should've got into one of the subsequent blocks though.
