Title: BayFiles - New uploading site from the people behind Piratebay
Post by: 2_Thumbs_Up on August 30, 2011, 09:00:43 PM
Get them to accept bitcoins! Considering that they seem to be quite open to new technology and that Bitcoin is quite popular in the pirate scene it shouldn't be impossible. Since they are new they will probably appreciate the attention that this could bring them as well. So send them a feature request at their site. I already did my part.

Hi!

I was wondering if you have any plans on providing payment in bitcoins. I believe bitcoin is really a suitable payment system for this kind of service, since it provides near instant micro-payments for a very low fee.

Also, it seems that some of your competitors have taken notice to this and are already starting to make a move to allow bitcoin payments.

I would also make sure they know about services like bit-pay that let them convert bitcoin donations or payments into USD immediately and with ease.

They've opted to comply with officials this time around and have already promised to remove any content deemed illegal. Nonetheless, they face an uphill battle to shake the reputation of illegitimacy. BayFiles appears more controlled than their original venture, but considering anyone can upload content, the site may still attract unscrupulous users.

"may" lol

We have strongly considered Bitcoin as a payment option and did some testing.
However, we are not convinced that the current Bitcoin system offers enough
privacy to users and the technical implementation of the official client is not
ready for prime time for online stores yet in our oppinion.

We'll keep an eye on it.

Wow, that is actually a good answer. If someone can say "the technical implementation of the official client is not ready" it means they've really done their homework.

No.  Just stating an opinion doesn't automatically mean they know what they are talking about.

Visa, Mastercard and paypal offer more privacy to the consumer?

You should post this in Technical Development thread.  Maybe a programmer will get in touch with Bayfiles and talk geek to them, figure out what features are needed for these download sites to accept bitcoin.  Seems like a killer app.

The "privacy to users"seemed odd to me too. On thinking about it I wonder is it poorly phrased and the point they are getting at is to do with the fact that the wallet is unencrypted by default currently. Should have said something like "protection to users" rather than "privacy". Bit of a leap to make perhaps?
