Title: Mining Rig Profitability
Post by: xbudahx on January 11, 2014, 02:13:50 AM
I'm about to pull the trigger on purchasing the parts for a mining rig and was trying to work out profitability. Using coinwarz and middlecoin I came up with these figure.

Do you guys think I'm in the ballpark?

Am I seeing it right, 2100.00 for 2100 k/h? seems the ratio is high, you should be able to get more hashes for 2100.00.

Unless you plan on doing other stuff with the system, I would go with a much cheaper MB and CPU... Even your PSU price is too high :]

Go with an AMD 145 CPU, a MB that costs no more than $100 (yet has enough PCI slots), and maybe $230 for the PSU (EVGA G2 1300's or Rosewill 1300's are around that price)

If you are comfortable with Linux, a mining distribution (like BAMT) is free, other than the cost of a 4GB or larger USB Drive

Riser cables can be purchased for $10 to $20 a piece depending on if you want powered or unpowered... 1x or 16x

Of course, if you also want to game / use the system as a "normal" computer then a lot of this doesn't apply... otherwise it's all about getting the cheapest parts that still work reliably (other than the high-end GPU's of course)

As for profitability, that's something that is much harder to predict. A few weeks ago a "normal" rig of 2.5 MH/s or so was making >$50... a few weeks before that you were lucky to make $12 a day... I think $15-20 (not including power costs) is perfectly reasonable, however, I say that with not much confidence :P

except for video cards, i'd say if you shaved off whatever you could by going with the cheapest everything you're in the ballpark for break-even.

i've been adding rigs to my farm whenever the prices and inventory present opportunities.  make sure you don't overpay for video cards; some people make more money on video cards than mining.

The high MB and power supply cost is due to the 7 video cards. Do you not think it's worth it to get 7 cards in one rig?

depends on the space you have to work with, and the noise and heat you can tolerate.

it's great to increase your cards per rig; but i go for stability, and i personally prefer 3 or 4 cards per setup (slightly underclocked, undervolted), which is more manageable for me than trying to get 5 or 6 cards rock solid stability.  i want to be able to walk away for weeks and not have to intervene.

regarding expense: if you are building open rigs 2x500w is cheaper than 1x1000w.   for video cards, keep in mind before the november price increase 7950s were $200 and 280x were $300; See if you can buy direct or backorder from your supplyer rather than ebay or craigs.   things will change quickly for 2014, so avoid paying for overpriced cards.
