Title: Aircon - How many kilowatts will it need to cool 5kWh of heat?
Post by: mackminer on September 03, 2011, 06:50:19 PM
Yello,
I've four rigs in my room that are using about 1.2kWh each - around 5 kilowatts in total.

How much power would this require to keep that cool do you think? http://toshiba-klima.at/produkt/artikel.php?id=634&lang=2

DO NOT COOL THEM. Move the hot air out - a LOT more efficient.

If you have a window go buy 2 window fans place one on top one on bottom use the fan on top to blow air out and use the fan on the bottom to pull cooler air in(repeat per window if you have 2 or more)

Go to the store and buy bags of ice and fill your room with ice. What could possibly go wrong?

I'm thinking ice melts still...

That A/C has an EER - cooling of 3,24; i.e.  1kW of electrical energy will "destroy" 3.24kW of heat. Actually, that EER is probably not the same for all temperature differences and for all levels of load, so it will vary slightly. It may be safer to assume that it'll be somewhere around 3.
That way, to cool your 5kW of heat, it will consume somewhat less then 2kW.

There are A/Cs on the market with an EER above 4, finding a good one and fitting it for your purposes (i.e. not having an oversized or undersized A/C) can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Interesting. I didn't know they rated them like that.

For the rigs I'd either move it to a non-AC location and vent outside or build a light enclosure, maybe even out of cardboard, to surround them and vent outside.

I don't have to do that because here (in Thailand) I don't have AC and the temperature outside and inside are usually close: 30-32C in the day, and 27-29 at night. With Sapphire 5830 cards I've found that the coolers warm the air by 5-7C and my core temps stay around 68-70C with varying the fans from 55%-60%.

At todays btc prices it just doesn't make sense to cool with AC.

Most people seem to be investing in short term profits, I'm investing in long term uptake and thus, incremental increase in the value of individual coins.

Hence, given that I may be losing money if calculated this, short term way, so what! I don't even put my energy into these sort of calculations. It's all speculation or to use another word, gambling.
