Title: One fan stopped spinning on GPU?
Post by: Monetizer on January 14, 2014, 01:52:26 AM
Ok so I have been running my GPU fine now for about 2 weeks until just today I noticed one of the fans aren't spinning??? it tries to as if it was starting up but then just stops and repeats the process. It shouldn't be the psu because even without overclock or under any load it is fine (I am running a single asus 7950 on a 550w PSU.) This is still covered under warranty although if I send it in I will lose a lot of mining time :/ so I would preffer not to.

I think you need a 850watt PSU. It does looks like it is the PSU which is causing you problem.

Fans die on GPUs all the time when they run 24/7. I had two out of my three original Sapphire GPUs experience fan failures in less than 3 months of running. They hardly lubricate the little sleeve bearings. Usually if you pry carefully you can pop up the motor hub and add a drop of oil to the shaft.

If the GPU is working (IE displaying to a monitor or mining without errors) it's not a PSU problem.

Yea, there is no problem with it other than this and it has been running fine for a couple weeks. Although the fans spin fine when I do it by hand it is just they struggle to keep going.

I usually lube them with bearing lube from a skateshop. Works like a charm! :D

Fan is dead or needs lubrication.  You can either try to fix it with youtube video guides or RMA it.  No need to mess with a new PSU.

Do not continue to mine with a dead fan though.  Even if GPU temps are fine the Voltage Regulation Modules (VRM) will overheat and when those die it will need an RMA for sure.

You should try to cool for sometime and start over again
