Title: How much bitcoin can i generate with this puppy?
Post by: Protower on January 21, 2014, 05:13:31 PM
Ok im a total noob at bitcoin mining but i know that using a computer you get a set amount of hash power that determines the speed/rate that you get bitcoins at...so below i tagged an image of this computer server thing i found in my garage..have i found a great way to mine bitcoins?

Sorry bud.  Unless it's an ASIC it will cost more to power up than it will produce.  Also, that big thing under that computer seems to be a core switch?  Maybe a Cisco CAT 6k?  Switches don't generate BTC :)

That doesn't even look like a computer.....That is a network switch of some sort....  My eyes are old.

Kinda hard to tell what those two things actually are from that picture.
Even more so, what's in them.

Either way, like previous posters have mentioned, the difficulty is too high for mining to profitable using anything but ASIC hardware.
In case you're not familiar with the expression, ASIC stands for Application-Specific Integrated Circuit.
It basically means that the hardware in question has been specifically designed to perform one thing and one thing only.
Bitcoin ASIC miners are designed to mine bitcoins, obviously, and they do it very well. Just don't ask them to do anything else ;)

To get an idea of how big the difference is, you may want to have a look at this hardware comparison.
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison)
This list mentions the hashing power in MH/s (MegaHash per second).
In comparison, my overclocked ASIC S1 Antminer is running at 200 GH/s, and I make between 0.005 (https://www.google.com/search?q=0.005+btc+in+usd)-0.015 (https://www.google.com/search?q=0.015+btc+in+usd) BTC / 24 hours.

With the current price/BTC of ~600 USD there's just no way you could generate enough to cover the electricity it consumes using a computer/server.

And even if you add the possibility of the bitcoin prices skyrocketing (and it's not unlikely), I doubt you'd make more using the server to mine for bitcoins than you would simply selling it for whatever it's worth and buying ASICs for that money.

That being said, there are still altcoins out there which might be somewhat profitable to mine using your GPU. (there are so called CPU-algos, but from what I've seen, they don't last very long. Some clever guy just comes up with a way to use the GPU to mine them, and then CPU is pointless - correct me if I'm wrong)
Then you either keep the altcoins that you mine or trade them for bitcoins, if you prefer.

What a long post to say so little >_<

You wouldn't generate any significant amount of BTC from the hardware in question.

You are talking .0000000001 BTC which is 1/1,000,000,000 of a BTC.

Which is fractions of 1 cent.

This is true if OP's machine is actually a computer, but it looks like a modular blade-switch.

I'm just going to comment since this post is already at the top...

Did you guys responding after fisknils even notice that he bumped a thread that was posted in January of this year?  That's like bumping a 10 year old thread about how cool this new website called Myspace is  :P

Also the OP last logged in 50 minutes after he/she posted this, and hadn't come back since.  There's no point adding to the discussion.  Please always check the date of the original post.

The original poster has long since abandoned this thread and not posted a followup, nor any other posts on this forum, suggesting this topic is dead so I'm locking it to prevent people posting on it further, especially since this was never mining hardware. If the poster feels it's still relevant and wishes to post on this forum again, they can start a new topic.
