Title: Bitmex/Deribit for noobs - Leveraged Trading. Longs and Shorts!
Post by: allmeat27 on May 28, 2018, 04:59:45 AM
Huge note: Bitmex is cracking down on it's no US users policy. You used to be able to sign up via VPN and it was fine if you never used the VPN again. Now, if you login using a US IP they flag you. This means you need to use a VPN every time you login. The new up and coming futures exchange is Deribit which I've started using instead of Bitmex. The volume is lower, BUT it doesn't have the "System Overload" problems that Bitmex does. The fees are also lower on Derebit.

Note, you do get 10% off fees if you sign up through a referral link. Feel free to use mine: https://www.bitmex.com/register/astVxa and https://www.deribit.com/reg-4025.4455, but even if you don't use mine, use someone's because it's 10% off fees, which adds up. You're literally throwing away 10% on every trade if you don't use a referral.

I kept seeing the Bitmex wrecked twitter thing and seeing mentions of leverage all over 4chan, but had absolutely no idea what it all meant. It also looked too complicated for me so I've always ignored it. Got bored today and it's actually much simpler than it seems. There's a ton of guides that go super in-depth and those made absolutely no sense to me, so I'm going to explain it from an idiot's perspective.

First of all, the draw of Futures Exchanges is you can do what's called Leveraged trading. In the simplest terms possible, it means you multiply your percentage gains/losses. If you go 10x leverage long on bitcoin and bitcoin gains 1%, you gain 10% more money. This is super cool for impatient people like me because it allows you to trade more actively without getting wrecked by fees, and it's ridiculously exciting.

Again, both Bitmex and Derebit don't allow US users, so unless you're outside the US, you need to register under a VPN (and continue using VPN on Bitmex, Derebit should just be register under it and you're done). I use NordVPN and it's only $3 a month.

Once you're registered, deposit some BTC into your Bitmex/Derebit wallet. When you first open the trade screen it's going to look super complicated. It's not.

Buying Long on a coin means you expect it to go up. Buying short on a coin means you expect it to go down. Playing those buys works like any other Exchange (i.e. Binance). You can set a limit price to buy in at and an amount. to buy.

Now you want to pick your leverage. In the menu below that, there's a slider. Again, each multiplier of leverage means every 1% = your leverage multiplier. 1% gain with a 25x leverage means 25% gain. I would start with 2x/3x leverage until you get a good handle on things.

The Cost number below the buy long/buy short number is the big one here. With leverage, you're essentially putting loaned money toward a coin. With 10x leverage, you can buy 1 BTC even if you only have .1 BTC (this is why the percentage gains are so drastic). However, this means you can lose it as well.

Let's say you bought 1 BTC at $10000, Long at 10x leverage (So you put in $1000). If BTC dropped 10% to $9000, you would lose all $1000 you put in. If it went to $11000, you would gain $1000 and double your money. Bitmex will auto "liquidate you" if you drop too far and don't have any more money to cover (10x leverage means if it drops more than 10% you lose all the money you put in. 25x leverage means if it drops more than 4% you lose all your money).

You can change orders on the fly and constantly adjust. Let's say BTC raised to $10100 (1%). You could then sell your long order and you will have gained 10% and now you can invest your $1100.

Note, on Derebit, each contract is $10 rather than $1, meaning a 10,000 contract order on Bitmex is the same as a 1,000 contract order on Derebit.

Like I said, there's a ton of guides out there that go into the more fancy TA and ways you can adjust orders, but this should provide a quick overview to get you started. They have a testnet site where you can practice with fake money first as well.

Long worked out great. Lots of money to be made in these areas since it's bouncing back and forth constantly.

I thought for sure we'd punch through the 7800 area by now, but I'm thinking if we don't get through tomorrow I'm gonna short down to 7100 again and open another long with stop loss of 6850... This market is very hard to deal with, especially on the mex. I'm having more trouble than I ever have trading right now, but with the bear market squeeze I keep playing in the dumb zone.  Lets just get down to 6000 already find a huge wick, and get this show on the road... tired of the stagnant market.. tired of the algo bots creating bart candles.. sick of the low volume.. lets get moving!

Definitely think sub 6k is confirmed, not messing with longs anymore. Looking for a 6.6k short.

Sir Margin trading is not a place for newbie like us :). We will always hit margin call and lose  huge amount of money because of the x100 leverage. I've been there and i will not repeat that again.

Do not use leveraged trading until we are consistently making good trades.

Do not learn your lessons in a hard way. good luck.

Bitmex is great platform for trading Bitcoin futures with leverage which possible to make profit from bearish and bullish trend. And for beginner is better to use maximum 5 leverage, too high leverage is the same like betting and too high risky. This good platform is great to use when the situation of market just like now.

This is why I love margin trading though I haven't earned from it for awhile because I quiet scared of getting liquidated. Much better if I could trade it in on an accurate way.

Simple information for some newbies who wants to plan to do margin trading with bitmex. But some piece of advice, always do 10x leverage especially when you are new to this field. Or even if you are well experienced, 10x leverage is safer and prevent huge loss.

Got pretty lucky and managed to profit on the quick downswing and then flipped to a long and caught this up swing. Super good day today. I think we'll see a retest of 6200 then back up for a bit, maybe 6.5 or something. We'll see how it goes, but definitely leaning long after a small retrace.

I just have one advice for all the noobs/newbies in here, STAY away from Leveraged trading if you do not even consider yourself as prepared for doing normal trading, remember that you will be using leveraged funds and you can lose more easily.

It doesn't make sense to short again after being liquidated like that. Unless there is some failed high at $7500, then wait for confirmation first.

I don't know if you read the Trollbox but there are way too many bears on Bitmex which think BTC will go to $2000 next month. They keep shorting, getting rekt and deposit more money into their Coinbase account from their bank account and start shorting again for no reason because people on the trollbox say so.

If you look on the daily chart it we broke the daily resistance of $6800 set last month and looks like we might be near term bullish.

I highly disagree. Almost every indicator pointed down at 6750 and it still pumped 10%, meaning those were definitely pointing down now. Even if it's a minor retrace to 7.3 (which has already happened), it was still due to go down at some point and is the correct call 90% of the time I think. I'll look at a long term long when I see the 4 hr and daily reset a bit.

Another good day. Basically my strategy the last two days has been to find good entry points and then set smaller orders up to $100 passed that point. Even when I miss the entry really bad, it's eventually retracing way passed each one and I've done pretty well. Will likely get caught in one one of these times, but hoping this continues for sure!

The market price has already improved and it reached $7400 dollars and this is the reason why there is always a chance that the price of bitcoins might pump up anytime soon.

Leverage trading is a very dangerous job for beginners. It's not easy to just click, you have two - three times amount of capital, or x10, that's unbelievable. It's like putting yourself in a gambling game to put one and win 10. Be careful !

This continue test of 7.8k is scaring me a bit. 2h, 4h, and daily are all curving down, we'll see how high it goes.

I believe that the leverage that can be used when trading Bitcoin can be a maximum of x3, all that above is a huge risk. Bitcoin is already volatile and can go up and down by $ 2000 without any rollback trends, which can make even experienced traders out of the market. I believe that it is necessary to study these points before you start trading

BitMEX trading has literally changed my entire trading mindset.
I used to trade predominantly on Binance, but I find BitMEX so much easier to make gains.

I wrote a guide for BitMEX that has helped a load of people already. Feel free to check it out.

Had longed 8k and was sweating bullets as I DCA'd down to 7.8k. Definitely paying off now. Seeing 8.3kish as the next target here after a small retrace.

Welp I got mega boned on today's pump as I was still in the short. Unfortunate, but it happens. Lost about a week of earnings, time to get back to it. Shorting from 7500 here.

Shorts and long are really complicated sometimes and one must take special care while making desions at bitmex. One small error and wrong descion can cause the loss of all the money and earnings.

Stuck in a 6500 short but fairly sure it's going to retrace at some point.

The market price has already improved and it reached $7400 dollars and this is the reason why there is always a chance that the price of bitcoins might pump up anytime soon.
Benefit is possible in the current market situations of Bitcoins as we know about favorable conditions which are presenting itself for we have to buy Bitcoin and the current market will charge me lesser for it. So this is a great opportunity and for shortening money we have Bitmex which has a low volume for us while other few are present which are having high volume for us.

Whats crazy is how fast the Sept and Dec futures have a huge premium from the flat price they had a few weeks back.

A few days ago the premium was only $50 and that's when the funding fee started being higher than > 0.05% and now on the Dec futures its over $100.

Basically alot of people want to long BTC but don't want to pay the funding fee for longing the perps so they long the futures however they are paying a huge premium.

IF the market shifts it can get pretty ugly very fast.

Its crazy nuts how the Sept and the Dec Premiums just disappeared.

The Sept premium now is at $20 from over $150.

The Dec premium is now at $90 from over $220 or so.

The funding wasn't bad this round, basically 1.3% funding rate if you started on July 25th or so.

A far cry from the 1% daily funding rates we got a few times in the past however.

When i first tried to log on I received a message that they don't allow American IP addresses. So my question is, what if I use a VPN? Anyone done that before?

easy records for some rookies who wishes to devise to do margin buying and selling with bitmex. however some piece of advice, continually do 10x leverage especially when you are new to this area. or even if you are properly experienced, 10x leverage is more secure and save you huge loss.

I have been running away from leverage trading all along. Maybe it's time to consider it. I heard it's quite risky, and has been the major reason why I haven't given it a trial yet. This bear market is taking forever, there seems to be no end in sight,  a good trader must be able to make money whether in bull or bear market. I have been missing out a whole lot on this aspect of crypto. Please I need all the information I can get on mastering leverage trading. Thanks mate.

Many people say that Bitmex is risky. But it provides one of the best ways to trade short and profit is easy from declining prices. If you use it correctly then it sure reduces risk at a remarkable number. It depends what leverage you use. The higher leverage you choose the less risk you face. They offer both short and long leveraged trades up to 100X leverage. But I suggest you never use more than 25X. Because bankruptcy prices at high leverage stacks the statistical odds against a sure winning trade. The liquidation price and bankruptcy gap means you lose.

I agree that leverage trading is high risky but is also high rewarded if you are disciplined enough to follow your strategy and make a good analysis before every move.

And of course x50-100 is only for pros or for a very small part of depo. I prefer x5-10, i feel very comfortable)

Also agree with short now ;)

I doubt if there is any news about that yet as even bitmex shuts out those who are from the US at the moment. I wonder why people really prefer going the leverage way all in the name of wanting to short the market to gain more, it is as risky as anything you can imagine and you would need a great deal of discipline to be going the leverage way.

Not saying it is bad, but even if there is no room for US citizens, that simply does not make you handicapped from trading on other platforms.

Leverage trading in general requires you to really know what you are doing, so the fact that you got liquidated could have only been for one reason. You never really had a strategy or a plan which could have happened to you anyway in any trading platform outside leveraging platform.

The only difference here is that with a higher leverage, you can play with losing all your funds, while in normal trading, you can simply just decide to hold and buy lower as the case may be.

Have bookmarked this thread to keep some head ups with bitmex trading, have attempted that in the past but got liquidated, maybe have to do some more work and learning here
Leverage trading in general requires you to really know what you are doing, so the fact that you got liquidated could have only been for one reason. You never really had a strategy or a plan which could have happened to you anyway in any trading platform outside leveraging platform.

The only difference here is that with a higher leverage, you can play with losing all your funds, while in normal trading, you can simply just decide to hold and buy lower as the case may be.

Absolutely agree with you.

Leverage trade is designed to make you lose your deposit. This is not an opportunity to earn more, as people may think.

In my opinion, Bitmex is a large platform for trading Bitcoin futures with leverage that allows it to profit from bearish and bullish trends. The higher leverage you choose the less risk you face.

I don't think it's true that bitmex is also an exchange place that has a very high daily trading volume and with the facilities provided from bitmex you should be able to use it to grow assets that you have in an easy way and can be used to learn so everyone it must be at any time to learn and do not feel to be someone who is smart or arrogant.

Hoping for a 6425 long.
Bitmex is great for people who know what they are doing and are careful however if you are doing leverage trading and you are "noob for bitmex" than you are doing something very dangerous for yourself, I would definitely suggest to get away from bitmex and leverage trading until you are already good at trading regular trading.

If you start doing well on regular trading and get good results and start to make profits than you can slowly start to move to leverage trading and start there slowly with low amounts and try to make some returns, do not jump right in hoping you can make a lot of money right away.

How do you manage to enter or exit at the wicks? Do you use limit orders or do you want for some pullback or bounce. Basically ever since that last update that they did, the trading engine is usually overloaded and you can't get any trades in at all.

Basically its gotten so bad that you are better off just using another exchange and just base the trades on what is happened with Bitmex.

I don't think Leveraged trading is a good idea for noobs , not even average traders , I think it's only for experts , It has high risk yeah it could be more profitable as the same time it could be more damaging , I haven't tried bitmex yet coz i dont think im and advanced trader yet!

6550 still seems possible, but 6420 seems to be a bit of a block. Scared to long here in fear of a quick 6050 drop. Sitting out tonight for sure.

The way I see it, the most potential resistance is going to be $6800 area.

I think the bull trend is too strong to stop here. Look at the huge premium now for the future contracts, especially March 2019. Also we had positive funding a few times in the last few days.

With BCH, XRP also pumping like crazy, not a good time to short BTC in this area unless its a small scalp.

This is an easy way to earn money and it will make you easily bankrupt. This is not the investment field, this is a game based on luck. So if you get too involved in this area, you will soon be owed a lot of money. I used to have a friend who owed more than $ 30k just because I was in the game for 2 months.

Took a bit of a hiatus. Bitmex cracked down on US users and the uncertainty of it made me pause a bit. I'm still using Bitmex a bit, but had to make new accounts.

I've switched primarily to Derebit (https://www.deribit.com/reg-4025.4455 for 10% off fees!). The fees are less there and there's no System Overloaded crap. However, the volume is much lower so it takes some getting used to.

Looking to long 3250 here.

Need to do a better job updating this! Been getting used to Derebit and not having to worry about system overload, has definitely altered mytrading strategy!

The long at 3250 was great, but took profit WAY too early. Currently playing swings. Possibly looking for a relong at 3650ish.

A friend got busted by system overload on bitmex. Not even rushed to trade, he analyzed 9 times and traded once, but got hit by their fancy system performance.
I guess, it's a lesson learned, 1 more way to fail out of hundreds of possible ways... only few ways to actually succeed out there.
