Title: ○ Marscoin [MRS] Colonizing Mars!
Post by: atleticofa on January 27, 2014, 04:02:24 PM
I am not the dev, I just saw it in cryptocointalk and looks interesting for me. https://cryptocointalk.com/topic/3763-marscoin-mrs-information/

MARSCOIN MRS

Currently, there are two attempts underway to establish the first human base on Mars. While technologically not impossible funding such a project (estimated at 6-20 billion) is a major obstacle. If you share our dream of making that first giant step for mankind a reality, then Marscoin might be something for you.

Simply by using Marscoin, a bitcoin alternative, you will automatically participate in serious boostraping efforts to colonize Mars.

We donated 350,000 Marscoins to MarsOne, a non-profit that attempts to build the first colony on Mars. With your help - by adopting Marscoin - we will be able to help fund mankinds first colony on Mars simply by kickstarting the financial system of the future Mars colony!

In addition, once the colony is set up MarsOne or a Mars colonist could take Marscoin to Mars and install it. That means that your Marscoins would continue to be yours on Mars, forever.

just the one, what about 51% thingy, I may not have a full understanding of this yet, but if there is only 1 pool then that would be 100% of the work being done by 1 pool ? leaving it open to manipulation attack ?

One of the devs here.

Official history of Marscoin:
==================

Marscoin was created 1.1.2014 and launch date posted on website for mid-January (official end of the MarsOne indigogo campaign). Pre-mining the initial donation for MarsOne with the help of some early miners who found the project during that time. The team is international right now, with devs in the US, Europe, Russia...

We had slightly over 500k coins outstanding after launch. The majority of which is dedicated to MarsOne. Last week was the first official week. We spread the network launch on space related websites ... space.com, mars society etc. for one week to give them an extra edge for one week. We jumped to 2 MH/s during that week.

This weekend we spread the word at the Bitcoin conference in Miami (as mentioned on the launch page), giving away faucet.marscoin.org cards and officially launching in the Bitcoin community. It was definitely easier to explain the idea of Marscoin to the Bitcoin crowd than the space community. Lot's of great feedback and support!

Any questions, let me know.

Scam coin.

-Bad specs (24h diff retarget will destroy the coin as you'll have 1 day of mining and one day off mining)
-300k premine that like what 6k blocks which will results in what ? a week or more of the whole network mining and the coins split on the whooooole network
-1.2mill insta mined coins? really?
I was looking forward to this, but it's was ruined pretty badly

Great that you were as excited about Marscoin as we are. Maybe I can clarify some things. The specs are similar to Terracoin, and other altcoins that use a 540 block retarget. Marscoins 590 retarget roughly every 25 hours was chosen in light of the difficulties Litecoin based altcoins faced in recent months.

380k premined is a donation for MarsOne. I don't know what you mean by "coins split". Rather than having a few rich miners premining we donated all initial coins to MarsOne. Since the launch a lot of miners have joined us and mined either solo or in pools. Looking forward to any questions. You can also join our IRC channel @freenode #MRS and #Marscoin

Just to let u know , theres a fairly new exchange "cryptorush.in" that has quite a few new coins listed and will list pretty much any coin for a 0.25 btc fee if you are the developer..or the community can just request without paying a fee, they will consider but they might not list it. Just an idea to get ball rolling on trading

Awesome idea, and justifies the creation of an altcoin... but

Awful parameter selection:
  • scrypt is a proven failure.
  • There is no demonstrable benefit to faster blocks.
  • There is no clear standard for a "Mars minute" with which to define block time in (I'd question if this unit even should be defined).
  • Difficulty retarget is probably too fast and will allow luck to influence difficulty a lot.
  • Why change total coin supply?

Additionally, it would really make sense to try to address the shortcomings of Bitcoin with known solutions, in any new altcoin.
I don't see any evidence of that here.. :(

The faster blocks make sense though if you want to protect yourself from Earth miners (see discussion in their forum under "Evil Earth Miner Scenario". The retargeting is similar to 540 block coins, like Terracoin.

Regarding the coin supply: it aligns with the departure of the Marscoin blockchain to Mars:

2014 50 coins
2016 25 coins
2018 12 coins
2020 6   coins
2022 3   coins
2024 1   coin

Except it does nothing to protect you...
Earth just needs more hashrate, and their blockchain trumps Mars', no matter how delayed.

Imitating a scamcoin which has had problems as a direct result of the change, is not the best idea ;)

Why is this a good thing? I'd think it make more sense to have most of the coins mined on Mars itself, not most on Earth...

It will make it harder as it adds a much higher burden on a co-ordinated attack from Earth. Yes, they will have more hashing power, but to advance such a large blockchain in such a short time frame it will need a concerted effort from Earth to do that. On top of that, if the Marscoin network adds a timestamping or other security measures that are local to Mars an attack from Earth is impossible due to the distance.

The retargeting is similar to 540 block coins, like Terracoin.

Terracoin's solution to its problems was adopting a 540 retarget. They are by far not the only Litecoin blockchains with a similar retargeting interval. Check out the discussions here: https://github.com/terracoin/terracoin/issues/14

Depends. The idea is to raise the money NOW to actually help make the Mars mission a reality. Thus you increase the incentive for people to get into the currency before the blockchain leaves. Once on Mars, the Marscolonists have better things to do than to put their servers on a mining armsrace - Marscoin on Mars will then mainly become a transaction network. If need be, the minimal mining that will continue could be monopolized by MarsOne or whoever runs the base to pay early Mars settlers to incentivise the growth of the colony.

Appreciate your thoughts and input!!

I don't see how; the terrestials will just naturally create a forked blockchain, and if they have a higher hashrate, it will replace the martian one as soon as it gets far enough ahead...
On top of that, if the Marscoin network adds a timestamping or other security measures that are local to Mars an attack from Earth is impossible due to the distance.
I'm not aware of any such measures that can be taken without centralising the currency.

Raising the money is done with the premine. Beyond that, it doesn't help raise money at all.
If all the subsidy is mined before leaving Earth, then where is the incentive for martians to mine at all, much less maintain the same hashrate as it had on Earth?
Keep in mind that the difficulty needs to be high enough to make it resistant to attacks...

I'm not aware of any such measures that can be taken without centralising the currency.
Similar to a timestamping server here on Earth (or yes, even an ICANN like construct, but that is centralization, indeed). It will be in the Mars colonists' economic best self-interest to install server(s) that issue a list of timestamp marked credentials - which could be incorporated in each block to verify the mining occurred on Mars.

Raising the money is done with the premine. Beyond that, it doesn't help raise money at all.
Yes it does: the 300k (now 400k) of premined Marscoins are worth nothing at this point (well, on reddit they go for 10-80cents right now). If the incentive is strong enough, more and more fiat currencies will be exchanged for Marscoin driving up the price for Marscoins. That alone will make the initial premining worthwhile and allow MarsOne to actually make use of it. Maybe I should have said "allows to fund activities and make purchases in fiat related to the actual mission roadmap" instead of "raise money".

Keep in mind that the difficulty needs to be high enough to make it resistant to attacks...
See the above answer regarding the credentials incorporated into each block by a (network) of security servers that could form the backbone of a Martian internet.

Let me know what needs to be done, in your opinion, to convince you of Marscoin? Curious!

If a centralised system is desired, no blockchain is necessary at all.
Earth does not have any such timestamping restrictions on blocks.

Higher supply decreases value, not increases it... so this doesn't really argue why it should be increased quicker.

Let me know what needs to be done, in your opinion, to convince you of Marscoin? Curious!
Well, now it sounds like the goal is a centralised system masquerading as a decentralised one...
I'd be more inclined to support a system that improves on Bitcoin (or at least retains its functionality) rather than seems to be introducing new problems without addressing the existing ones.

Some posts on reddit.com aren't a proof.

If MRS worth something, why this coin is not listed on Cryptsy / Coinex etc ? Like the MOON, DOGE, Terracoin  ?

If a centralised system is desired, no blockchain is necessary at all.
Earth does not have any such timestamping restrictions on blocks.
It is not "desired" - it would only be necessary in the unlikely event of a massive attack from Earth. Something we could discuss for the next 10 years to figure out. How to best address.

Higher supply decreases value, not increases it... so this doesn't really argue why it should be increased quicker.
Psychology: "Oh no, all Marscoin will be gone by the time they leave". Vs. "Oh, they have 100 Mio. Marscoins of which only 30 Mio are mined on Earth, who cares, my grandchildren can mine on Mars".

Well, now it sounds like the goal is a centralised system masquerading as a decentralised one...
I'd be more inclined to support a system that improves on Bitcoin (or at least retains its functionality) rather than seems to be introducing new problems without addressing the existing ones.
Welcome suggestions how you would implement such a system, initially, when Mars mining server are week and hashrate on Earth is high. So far Marscoin is completely decentral and if we can keep it that way, the better. Check out http://mars-project.com for discussions on this topic and/or the Marscoin IRC channel.

Yeah, I did give it some thought a few hours ago, but I was unable to come up with a workable solution :(
I suppose martians could prioritise an ASIC foundry and manufacture a proprietary implementation of some new proof-of-work.
It might leak to Earth, but hopefully by then it will be "too late"? :p

Pushing hard...all help welcome!

cryptsy.freshdesk.com/support/discussions/topics/64091

We spoke to cryptsy CEO Paul Vernon at BTCMiami. Guess what, he is a MarsOne fan and liked the idea. Said they look at hashrate, community engagement, general idea of the coin before they list it. Just have to keep growing Marscoin in popularity and cryptsy will list.

Also applied at https://crypto-trade.com/ and https://cryptorush.in

Please support with votes and comments.

LOL, yes: Eventually Mars colonists will overtake Earth anyways - they are closer to the Asteroid belt and can 3d metal-print giant scrypt-ASICS. Puny Earth network will shake in fear :-) The first interplanetary war will be about hashing power,  ;D

Yes, that's the older wallet version on windows... MRC was launched a little earlier and so they decided to launch as MRS (which makes more sense anyways)... The latest mac and linux wallets show the right abbreviation.

Hi all Astro_Osk here--I'm part of the marscoin dev team and www.MarsCoin-digital.us (http://www.MarsCoin-digital.us) marketplace Lead.

http://marscoin-digital.us (http://MarsCoin-digital.us) is NOW LIVE! Please start asking everyone you know to use the marketplace to generate interest in MarsOne funding (we donated 350k coins to them) and maybe even help fund the trip for the first colonists as the coins continue to increase in value.  Right now, the coin is traded at cryptorush.in, slightly higher on Reddit OTC, but now you can buy and sell items on the digital marketplace directly with coins.  And if you would like to make coins without mining, feel free to join as a digital product vendor.

Enjoy!

Can we try to get the coin on a few more general exchanges since the bigs ones take time and a whole lot of begging.

Another General exchange besides cryptorush  is http://www.cryptotc.us/market#2CH
They also list a lot of the newer coins, its a basic trading system and it gets the coin out there in more places. Its simple to request the coin on that exchange, just go to the contact page and ask for it to be listed. no need to sign up to do this either.

Disclosure: I'm a fan of this coin.

What I like about MarsCoin is what it represents. This is a future use case for alt currencies.  Supporting causes by voting with your dollar (or coins) is exactly what the future of cyrptocurrency will reflect.  If you do believe in this concept, and further believe in Mars, take a stab at this one.

The faster blocks make sense though if you want to protect yourself from Earth miners (see discussion in their forum under "Evil Earth Miner Scenario".
Except it does nothing to protect you...
Earth just needs more hashrate, and their blockchain trumps Mars', no matter how delayed.

It will make it harder as it adds a much higher burden on a co-ordinated attack from Earth. Yes, they will have more hashing power, but to advance such a large blockchain in such a short time frame it will need a concerted effort from Earth to do that.

Regarding the coin supply: it aligns with the departure of the Marscoin blockchain to Mars:
Why is this a good thing? I'd think it make more sense to have most of the coins mined on Mars itself, not most on Earth...

Raising the money is done with the premine. Beyond that, it doesn't help raise money at all.
If all the subsidy is mined before leaving Earth, then where is the incentive for martians to mine at all, much less maintain the same hashrate as it had on Earth?
Keep in mind that the difficulty needs to be high enough to make it resistant to attacks...[/b]

Of course it makes sense to start the coin now.  You have to understand that this is in fact a good test of a "use case" for coins.  Coins can represent a project, idea, an ideology or medical problem like curing aids.  If people BELIEVE in the cause, they will put money into the coin. They will buy it, mine it, and support it.  It's a direct influence on the primary holders of the coins, which happens to be MARS One.  Without use by the community, it would illiquid and would represent nothing.

If coins like this manage to thrive, many more will pop up representing causes that society values. You want to help homeless people? How about an abused animal coin to help all those poor dogs on TV with those big beedy eyes and sad music.  If MRS succeeds it's a fantastic use case example of how money can be moved to support a cause through this new digital ecosystem we are developing.

Cool article:

http://journalofcosmology.com/Mars108.html

Quote
Self-preservation considerations in a dangerous universe and the human exploratory spirit compel us to explore space and colonize other planets. Mars is the planet in our solar system, which is reasonably close and provides an abundance of resources and shelter for such a colonization effort.

and

Quote
While it would undoubtedly take a tremendous effort over many years to establish multiple settlements on Mars, we see no fundamental reason why this plan is not technologically implementable.

but

Quote
The main impediment is the narrow vision and the culture of political caution that now pervades the space programs of most nations.

ergo #Marscoin

Edit: Also you should update the website with a Mintpal, because it is a better exchange.

Marscoin MRS P2Pool - Mining Platform

Web Interface: http://94.23.196.92:19191

CGMiner Settings
URL: stratum+tcp://94.23.196.92:19191
USER: your_wallet_address
PASS: 123

What is a P2Pool? It's a decentralized mining pool network. Usually multiple nodes act as one big pool together. However, due to this fresh launch, this is the only node available at the moment. So what do you gain from this "P2Pool" then? You're basically finding mini-blocks for a sharechain and whenever a share of this sharechain is greater or equal to the difficulty of Marscoin (MRS), a block is found and the payout is immediate! In the block creation code, your wallet address is implemented and the block pays directly to you. No middleman! No risk!

Please, give it a try!

Pool is working nicely! Block found! ;)

Id Love to see more hash rate on it. Keep in mind, a balanced network is far more stable and secure than a single pool with all the hash power. (Which essentially isn't a network anymore ;) )

Just an FYI about the Mines of Mars pool (http://pool.marscoin.org/), they have really fucked up the processing of blocks and accounts were not being credited for most of the day. The pool hashrate has gone way down as most have already left, but just a heads up in case you were considering mining there. I would only consider mining there if/when we get confirmation the problem has been fixed. With the diff where it's at right now anyway I would just mine solo.

2014 Program Schedule

The 17th Annual International Mars Society Convention
South Shore Harbour Resort (SSHR), League City, TX, August 7-10, 2014

17th Mars Convention, Aug. 7th,  3-3:30 pm  Marscoin: A Cryptocurrency Exploring Private Funding to Bootstrap Space Colonization

http://www.marssociety.org/a/marssociety.org/www/conventions/2014/program-schedule (http://www.marssociety.org/a/marssociety.org/www/conventions/2014/program-schedule)

======================

Marscoin - A cryptocurrency exploring private funding to bootstrap space colonization
The Marscoin Foundation, Inc.

Marscoin proposes a public funding model for space colonization based on a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency network, built on the Bitcoin code. It tackles the largely unsolved funding hurdles for mankind's space exploration efforts by establishing a global, supra-national, voluntary currency that attempts to bootstrap future Mars colonies, incentivizing adoption of the digital currency as a stake in the colonies' future economy. Individuals that invest into this "joint-stock" colony funding model elevate the exchange rate of the currency, in effect providing the early stakeholders with the funding necessary for the construction of the future base. A copy of Marscoin, which is in essence a cryptographically secured public ledger, can then be transferred to the new colony, where it becomes the backbone of the future settlement's financial system. This proposed physical transfer of all the investments made by the early adopters of Marscoin thus not only funds the new colony ahead of time, but becomes the bedrock of the planet's growing economy. By virtue of its intrinsic algorithmic scarcity and immunity to inflation, any economic growth in the future colony will be reflected in the rising value of the currency on the new planet. As mission milestones are met, adoption rates are expected to accelerate and therefore increase the value of Marscoin. The net effect of this increasing value allows mission funding to become increasingly effective as the launch date nears. This model creates a financial incentive for the early stakeholders to achieve progress quickly and efficiently, and for an engaged and directly involved public. Marscoin is a proof-of-concept exploring financially viable private methods in dramatically lowering the threshold for funding colonies beyond planet Earth. It directly involves the general public in space exploration as it offers tangible ownership of the project with possible future financial benefits.

From the recent Q&A on Twitter with Mars One, here's a synopsis of the questions surrounding the selection process and training:

Q: where will the full time employees/ trainees of Mars One live full time? Will they be able 2 bring their families? A: We have not yet selected the training location. Like any other employee, crew members can take their family
Q: If a candidate is successful to round 3, how much notice will they be given to leave their current job and enter training? A: Candidates will have several months: training will also involve moving to the country where training takes place
Q: At what point will the reality TV portion of the project begin? A: We expect the documentary series on the selection process to start in spring 2015
Q: How many regions for interviews... 5, 1 per continent ? A: This is still to be decided. We will make sure everyone can easily participate in the interview round
Q: Do you already know where the first simulation outpost will be? A: Having discussions about potential locations, no final decision yet. We welcome proposals
Q: How many of the #705 candidates will make it to the next round? A: There isn't a determined number. The actual total will depend on the number of qualified candidates among the 705
Q: Can you offer a rough timescale for Rounds 2-4 of astronaut selection? A: The interviews will happen this year. Round 3 early 2015. We hope to select the 1st teams to train by end 2015

Great coin but volume very low on poloniex. Might get delisted down the line if it doesn't increase.

Please reference this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=721263.180) for the latest on Marscoin [MARS].  The Marscoin (https://www.marscoin.org) cryptocurrency, a fork of Litecoin and Bitcoin, is still an active project since 2014 and backed by the nonprofit Marscoin Foundation (http://www.marscoinfoundation.org).

Another of those hype Trolls post of Elon Musk, Saw in the first 24 hours that mars coin price pumped almost +1200%. But this is a good opportunity for the project to be recognized by more.
