Title: Making bitcointalk accounts OpenID identities
Post by: amincd on September 13, 2011, 07:17:47 AM
I realize the timing could be better, but I wanted to throw this out there:

If bitcointalk could become an OpenID identity provider, then our forum accounts could be used to log into bitcoin related sites. It would be useful for identity management, and transferring trust across the net.

Any chance this could happen?

What's the value for the user?

You can remember one username/password and log in to many different accounts.
In some cases you don't have to do anything but provide an OpenID in order to start a new account. That means you can start personalizing a new service really fast.
You don't have to trust random new sites with your info, your OpenID authenticator will hold and confirm everything for you.
In theory, you should be able to choose how much of your full profile to expose to different sites you log into.

Sounds like cons to me, not pros.

It's ideal for the Bitcoin community/economy because there are so many new Bitcoin sites being launched that it becomes cumbersome to register to each one to try it out. It's also good because trust is an important factor in a lot of Bitcoin-related services, given it has to do with money, and forum reputations can be trusted to some degree.

Oh, that will be a good addition for the contributors forum, thanks for the idea!

Hope to install it today.

No problem, here's the wiki page on setting up an OpenID identity server:

Yeah, I've found that already and found a good library and almost done :)

Services should offered openID authentication (consumers), but I am not sure that bitcointalk should necessarily be an identity provider.

+1

I don't see any reason to make it an identity provider. The reputation of the security of this forum has been flaky, at best.

Please, please use a different, preferably auto-generated password for all bitcoin-related sites.

Making it (optionally) an OpenID consumer would be ok.
