Title: Leger nano s - updating applications
Post by: Zaquess on June 04, 2018, 02:12:32 PM
Hello, recently i got my new(old) Ledger nano S. I bought it from one person who bought it early in January, so i had to did the update, which i did, firmware version to 1.4.2 and MCU to 1.5, sucessfully. i was going through instructions on start.ledgerwallet.com. I was updating applications(tokens) and when i came to Ethereum, it says there is not enough space on wallet-that i must delete some tokens to get space.  Can someone explain me how many tokens can i have stored in Ledger, not as many as i wish? did i something wrong when i was installing update? and i didnt yet set a password and nothing because it was said to me first to do the update, maybe something wrong because of this? help please, thanks greetings

You can install up to 18 apps (depending on which ones you install).

If you install an app which crypto is a clone of Bitcoin[1], there will be more space left because they share the same library - hosted in the Bitcoin app - so their size will be lower. However, for apps that use its own library (like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, FIDO U2F and Password Manager), the space taken will be bigger, so you can only install from 4 to 5 apps "bigger" apps.

Keep in mind that when you delete an app, you will not lose your coins. So you can install it back later and keep using like nothing had happened. E.g: you install the ETH app, receive some tokens but want to install the NEO app. So you delete the ETH app, install the NEO and receive your NEO coins. Then, you want to manage your ETH again, so you delete the NEO app and reinstall the ETH app. Your ETH tokens will still be there.

[1] which are: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Dash, Zcash, Komodo, Stratis, Posw, Pivx, Viacoin, Vertcoin, Stealthcoin, Digibyte, Qtum, Hcash

Seeing as you bought your ledger from someone before, make sure to RESET THE DEVICE. IF you set your wallets up without resetting it, the person who had it before you will now have access to your accounts!

You need to input the wrong password several times until the device erases itself. Just to be safe, reset it a few times. It may take you a little bit more time to reset the device, but it's so much better than losing all your crypto saved onto it.

Honestly, unless you 100% trust the person who sold it to you I would suggest buying a brand new ledger from the actual company that makes them. This way you know they haven't been tampered with. It is 100% possible to hack the ledger if you have access to it before a person is able to set up the device. That's why it's suggested to buy directly from the company that makes them.

You really need to be extra safe when it comes to protecting your cryptocurrencies.
