Title: This is happening a lot, someone fix it.....
Post by: max2607 on June 05, 2018, 09:00:19 PM
Ok before I start please don't backfire me I was away for a long time so this topic might already exist

So back to the topic, I found a couple of members, or you can see some 20+ alts who were also abusing the merit system to rank each other

Here's the post I made: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3168616.msg34841172#msg34841172

And when I checked back to see if any DT took any action I noticed all proofs were gone, what they basically did was gave some 20 merits to a post and finally the user who was merited deleted the posts , so if we check their accounts now they just look like normal full members account and now based on what we have we can't really call them merit abusers

Who is to blame in this situation?

Because this was a vast network I decided to made a separate post (http://"https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3358398.msg35174162#msg35174162"), but no DT member tagged them, nor any staff took action against them

What's the solution?

I have said this before we either need more DT members because currently many of them are busy managing campaigns or don't give a damn about the forum
If possible theymos should also allow reporting of merit abusers to staff

On the merit history page you can only see 120 days old merited activities. This is why you are not seeing those old transactions.

Update:
We already celebrated the day when you were not here  ;D

All good things must come to an end.

Today marks 120 days since the merit system was introduced, and as Theymos said, old entries are going to start dropping off the file:

https://bitcointalk.org/merit.txt.xz

If you want a complete list of merit entries, you now need to keep your own historical records.

Oldest entries (120+ days) will also start disappear off of individual merit pages.

When presenting any type of evidence which could easily be hidden/removed through what ever means.. You should provide backups to the evidence provided. You can do this by archiving the post in archive sites. Screenshots aren't generally considered proof.

For example, archiving this thread before I submit this post: https://archive.fo/AZPh2

As you can see it takes a copy of the webpage at the time of archiving it. Any changes will not show up on the archive copy.

Old, dude merit system came this year and 120 days is around 4 months, I can easily remember that all these merit activities took place in may
Check your post also

Edit: Well yeah I just deleted one of my posts and checked to look like they got away

I'm completely aware what archive is, I have also used it in the past but this is not the main point I had all the proof up for a week, i kept begging for someone to take some action but no one took, please don't change the topic you are not helping at all

Yep, this has been an issue for a while, I even have proposed several times a "report possible merit abuse" button in each profile, for this is annoying to see how many people are abusing the system.
But, somehow, I agree with Theymos and some other members, the merit abuse has a black future, for they will run out of merits and, eventually, they will not be able to still ranking up by abusing the system.
However, the path they are able to walk by abusing the system still concerns me...

I think that the merit system works well, except for the abuse in the form of transfer of merits between their accounts or the sale of merits. It would be nice if these wise men were tracked down and punished.

I don't think Merit system works well.
It reduced the spam ofc, but now new members won't never rank up. I'm talking especially for people that post only in local sections, there are too few Merit sources there.

You can still have a look at the old stats if you ask LoyceV in this thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4444830.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4444830.0)
It won't help the deleted posts, of course
If I remember well, only admins can read deleted posts (to gather evidence), and not mods, but someone will correct me if I'm wrong

Sorry for replying late I wasn't online for a while, I could post on LoyceV thread to get merit history but I need to know first Will any DT member tag them because as I said last time we had all the proofs but no one took any action. I don't want to spend my time on exposing merit abusers when no one wants to take any action against them
