Title: Community-financed adwords campaign?
Post by: Killdozer on September 17, 2011, 10:42:27 AM
Let's setup an account with adwords, and try to get anyone to donate to that campaign, and basically run a pay-per-click campaign for keywords like "pay online", "anonymous payment", "liberty reserve" and such.

This would certainly promote bitcoin, and online marketing seems like the perfect way for this. We will attract target audience (ie, not offline people who never even heard of online payments) for very reasonable price.

Not only would it get more people to get interested in bitcoin, it would benefit everyone in the long run, the more people are using it, the more stable the price (and probably higher too, since the demand is increased).

We could setup a single bitcoin address, and a trusted person would transfer the money to the adwords campaign, providing us with screenshots. If I am not mistaken, there can even be public accounts of adwords which people can use to log in and check how much money was spent and on what advertisements. The actual donated amount could easily be checked from the block chain. So there are not many ways this scheme can be frauded.

If this works well, maybe even some pools could cotribute some percent from their generated amount to this address, for the sake of the community and the future.

I would do this, but it's probably better if someone with larger reputation here does it to get the trust of donators.

So basically what we need in this case:

- A trusted person that could setup this kind of thing and keep it going? If noone wants to, we can discuss some reward scheme. (Like a percent of all donations go to him, or a set amount per month)
- We must come up with advertisement texts and keywords that those text should apply to. Please put your suggestions here!

I suspect that us trying to use Adwords to promote bitcoin would conflict with Google's interest in their money-handling business, and then we'd be without money or advertising.

not to mention, planning advertising as a community would probably be like herding cats.

I think adwords will be pretty expensive, best will be to make available a suite of easy to implement bitcoin transactions software etc for merchants.  Having merchants to accept bitcoins and having customers to buy in bitcoins will be the best method to promote bitcoins.

Now is not the time to advertise, now is the time to develop. In 6 months to a year most of the projects being worked on now will be ready and polished enough for regular users and the protocol should have all of the most important scalability improvements implemented. That will be the time to begin thinking about advertising, we don't want to bring people to Bitcoin only to find that its too complex for them to use and/or the influx of new users causes protocol problems because scalability fixes are not implemented yet. First impressions are important, Bitcoin could gain a stigma that we do not want if we where to try and push it out there before its ready. Go ahead and get the ball rolling on plans and funds for advertising, but wait awhile before you actually start.

A company that accepts Bitcoins to place adwords would be nice.
