Title: "Error opening block database" Need help
Post by: zandreal on June 10, 2018, 08:59:04 AM
Bitcoin Client Software and Version Number: Bitcoin Core v0.16.0
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate
System Hardware Specs: CPU: AMD FX(tm)-6300, RAM: 8 GB, Hard drive space: 1.36 Tb
Description of Problem: The last time I used Bitcoin Core was in 2015 (v0.11.0). I figured I needed to download the newer version, so I downloaded v0.16.0 but I get an error that says "Error opening block database" with an option to abort or say okay. When I choose ok, I get the same message again with only ok as an option which closes the program.

It seems others have had similar problems, but I can't find any debug files in C:\Users\Bdawg\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin. I deleted the Bitcoin file, reinstalled hoping that it would make a new Bitcoin file with debug files in it but it didn't work. I'm not sure where those files are being stored if they are being stored at all.

I have also seen solutions about reindexing my hard drive. I did it like this: Control panel->indexing->advanced->rebuild it took forever and it still didn't work.

I still have all my files from v0.11.0. The old version when opened would not prompt this error but ever since I tried installing the new version I get this error on both versions. I've reinstalled multiple times, tried it on both my SSD and HD. Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SATA III and Western Digital Corp. 1.5 TB SATA 3Gb/s 32 MB respectively.

I suppose another thing to note is that i have avast antivirus and the first time I tried installing, avast cancelled after it scanned the files for a couple seconds. I tried reinstalling a 2nd time and cancelled the scan before it could close it. I can't think of any other factors.

Thanks in advance

What do you want to achieve?

Do you want to (1) get your full node running or (2) access your bitcoins ?

To get your full node running (1) the best would be to redownload the blockchain since it seems to be corrupt.

If you only want to access your coins (2), copy your old wallet.dat into the data directory (usually located in C:\Users\YourUserName\Appdata\Roaming\Bitcoin (windows) or ~/.bitcoin/ (linux)).
Make sure to backup your wallet PRIOR trying to recover your coins.
Afterwards you will be able to dump the private keys and import them into a light-weight client (which does not require to download the whole blockchain; e.g. https://electrum.org/#home (https://electrum.org/#home)).
