Title: Can someone find out that you own bitcoin ?

I was following a thread and was amused by some of the answers. I'm interested to see how much people know.

There are many ways you can be revealed as a Bitcoin user. If you don't use ToR or similar software, your ISP knows that you visit Bitcoin resources like this forum. People leave many breadcrumbs that can reveal them even without any chain analysis, they discuss Bitcoin openly on social media or even in private messages (sites like Facebook definitely read them), same goes for real life - one can mention Bitcoin a few times with friends and suddenly everyone knows that they are a Bitcoin user.

not just bitcoin but all cryptocurrency in general are pseudo anonymous. It's up to you and how you handle your transaction and how you keep your asset.
I believe transparency is key characteristic of blockchain and with now KYC for more exchanges I believe being anonymous is now just a history.

I would say, absolutely. but the method depends on who the someone is.. in theory, it's almost always possible?
Anyone who visits an exchange and registers their identity, can in theory be tracked easily unless they "tumble"(?) their bitcoin through some tumbler service?
But, when it comes to an ISP and not using a VPN, they can probably one way or another find out, not entirely sure -
I mean, using a wallet software, would that encrypt the broadcast of transfers? I don't think so?
while using https websites would in a sense be more protective

your title and your poll are asking two different questions though. finding out whether someone has bitcoin or not can be a little different than finding how much and which coins.
for example when someone talks about bitcoin all the time, visits bitcoin related websites (bitcointalk, coinbase,...), has a bitcoin wallet installed then it is a safe assumption that they own bitcoin.
but knowing which address belongs to you and how much bitcoin you own is a much harder thing.

in any case multiple choices of that poll can be correct.
  • Yes - it is pseudo anonymous so if you are not careful it can be revealed is the most obvious answer.
  • Yes - through GPS in the bitcoin wallet code can be correct if you are using some unknown wallet that may have a backdoor ;) not that there is any that i have seen so far!
  • Yes - your identity is always revealed this depends on the type of wallet you are using. if you are using a WALLET like bitcoin core, armory, electrum,... then it is not. but if you are using a bitcoin ACCOUNT which they call wallet such as  coinbase then it is true.
  • Yes - through the nodes this can also be true but not easy. basically you have to create a ton of nodes and connect to a ton of other nodes. then you select someone's node and connect to it and fill all its connection slots. each time that node sends a transaction you check to see whether you have seen this transaction before (if it is relaying it) or it is a new one (creating it). if it is new then he owns the coins.

I haven't seen GPS in wallet code yet. Of course it would have to have GPS hardware to operate as well. Theoretically possible on a phone wallet.  ;D

No.

Although, the un-traceability is an inbuilt characteristic of Blockchain architecture, it will not be always un-traceable. If someone does not use an encrypted browsing mechanism like TOR, it is very simple to trace down a user of bitcoin. There can be many reverse engineering mechanisms to find out. Even though, if you use TOR, by analyzing public forums, documents or social media accounts, it will be possible to trace a bitcoin users.

Unless you use same address for every transaction.
Use blockchain.info and generate different address if you're worried about it and dealing with multiple parties.

there is no way to know only by you using blockchain, but they might find out when you decide to exchange crypto for fiat or possibly spend crypto, that's the vulnerability.

It depends on how cautious you are. It is all public knowledge on where the bitcoins move to and how much is in there. The part to keep secret is the final destination so if using a VPN then you'll be able to send / receive anonymously

No.

i was pointing out the "special cases" of each of these situations where they may become true :P
for example satoshi is right nodes can't tell these things but there is a way of isolating a node that you want (like government performing these stuff with a lot of funds) and get the information you want out of it.

The majority of people won't be careful enough to completely hide the fact that they do own some bitcoin, they should however be careful enough in most cases that a specific wallet address cannot be linked back to their identity. Even still it's not uncommon for people to post their addresses in multiple locations so I'm sure if someone wanted to go through the effort of piecing things together they could.

All that being said, for most people they're very open about owning bitcoin and it's not really necessary to hide this fact.

Securing your own crypto's is your personal job and if you don't want all the peoples to know that you earn a large sum of bitcoin just keep all the transactions and wallets hidden and use IP and VPN services which will protect you from getting tracked. If a person shares his transaction than all his other transactions can be tracked very easily. So, it up to you if you want to keep it anonymous you just need to take some measure and your balance will be hidden from everyone.

Yes, someone can. I believe that others already mention you the cases on how people can find out about you and your relation with bitcoin.

I just want to add that, I guess it is hard to keep your privacy in this time, especially if you access internet. I believe once you enter your information in any website, either it is trusted website or not, the data can be achieved by someone or something.

Cryptocurrency that is transparent in every transaction,
that happens to make a lot of people who know how many bitcoin you have,
by knowing the name or know the Wallet Address you have.

Yes, your Internet Service Provider can know you own bitcoins by tracking your websites, but they can never find how much bitcoin you have unless you reveal your wallet public key.

Your opinion is the same as mine, it is impossible for a person's identity to be recognized just that he is talking about bitcoin. although visible address on the transaction I think it will be difficult to find the identity of the owner

Im not good at this, but its a yes for me in your choices above it opens my mind through with this we can be monitored or track in other ways.

From all the options you listed what i only knew is through gps and bitmain backdoor by using common sense it will track the location but i don't believe the identity so you can be able to know a person handling a phone and having a bitcoin from his phone wallet but not knowing his identity.

I like this thread as i am surprised and learning on some answers from the persons who knows some kind of it. Based on votes result it is a clear thing that many knows that we cant be track or known a bitcoin user by using a phone.

Through doxxing someone could essentially find out exactly who you are, and if they're able to connect your Bitcointalk account to your identity then they definitely can find out what amount of Bitcoin you own, if they're connected to your account. Alternative, just seeing your address on something could be enough to tip someone off.

Of course, you already know this, but I always say this since there's still a lot of people joining the forum and a fair amount don't know as much due to inexperience.

My first answer is yes, I have the same reason as what BQ posted about the exchanges. Then again it could be also no because it depends on what you're going to do with your Bitcoins one could avoid disclosing his/her personal info by trading your coins for gift cards or buy a verified account from an exchange. This is one tricky question.

There are many ways you can be revealed as a Bitcoin user. If you don't use ToR or similar software, your ISP knows that you visit Bitcoin resources like this forum. Right, the first example is true but the irl example isn't until there's a strong proof mentioned.

Some SPV clients reveal your IP as well. The most likely way Bitcoin user's identity will be tracked is through KYC exchanges. This is already happening. governments will more likely than not make it increasingly difficult to purchase Bitcoin. With this intense regulation in place, you will be forced to buy Bitcoin through KYC exchanges. The exchange then reports your purchase to the government, and the wallet address your coins where sent to. The government then registers this address as being your originating address, and they can then follow the coins and see who/where you send them to. Bitcoins public blockchain could become globally surveilled and governments could have a massive database with identities, exchanges, and services tied to millions of addresses. This is a potential Orwellian future we could live in.

Kyc is another story and it was far from this options because it will be up to the person if he wants or willing to do submit KYC to access the full program in any other exchange. In public transactions it can be seen in public because of blockchain and this exchange who's not trusted may use it to leaked one's identity and put in harm.

As I know since the creation of bitcoin until now, bitcoin is known as Anonymus which means it does not recognize its user identity. if the user is recognizable then not Bitcoin.
so no one can connect you with bitcoins, unless you do it yourself.

of course not the bitcoin address does not give the name of the owner so they do not know exactly who the bitcoin owner is, they only know how much content of bitcoin owned in the wallet of others but do not know who the owner is.

I voted for YES-  it is pseudo anonymous so if you are not careful it can be revealed.
To no surprise, this is the most popular vote by a count of 10 to 5, with the 5 other people thinking NO- it is never antonymous.
This is a good indicator of how far Bitcoin has come, compared to the days when it was actually believed to be 100% anonymous, to now there being a better understanding that it is in fact a very traceable coin.
If you are truly looking for anonymity, some better options of coins would be Dash or Monero.

This is really an interesting question, I myself don't know if this is even possible to do so. I think there is actually a way to check if a person owns a cryptocurrency by doing an IP address and check their recent views in chrome or any other internet browsers. It is like when you view something online in amazon that you are interested but then after a few days the one that you have been looking in amazon pop-ups in facebook or youtube or any other sites. Probably something like that for them to check or there would be another way that the government can confirm it.

You are bound to get funny results because some of users does not even bother to learn what they are doing which is not a healthy situation, you cannot be really anonymous when it comes to bitcoin, unless you got hold of coins a long time back through mining and you are not moving the coins to any exchange then it is difficult to find the person behind it.

Bitcoin is decentralized digital currency and anonymous. no one should know your identity as long as you keep it by your self and not revealing to others. If you sign a transaction that needs to put your identity then it will no longer anonymous, they will know that you owned bitcoin. if the government control the bitcoin and the bitcoiner follow their rules there should no anonymity anymore because government will regulate the bitcoin and all the users should do kyc or something to show your identity.

I think it can revealed ypur identity if you are not careful, bitcoin is pseudo anonymous, its mean that all of the transaction can be tracked, but its is difficult to track, when the first time you make wallet you don't leave any identity, its only email address, but if you ever cashing out to fiat through bank, or any transaction that ever link to your identity then it can be track

no one can know that we have bitcoin, blockchain system is very confusing, because of many millions of blocks that save every transaction and investment.

so, I think other people cannot see the contents of our bitcoin wallet. and it's safer. unless it tells you that we have a bitcoin on the wallet

Though there are some kyc over the internet amd please be careful on who you are giving all your details. Yiu can ve tracked easily. Where you are right now. Where you signed and what you are using by that. That is why it is advided to changed address all the time.

Our identity can be revealed if the Government requests the KYC data to the Exchanger.

1. It's true that few SPV client leak/revel IP, but that doesn't matter if you use VPN, Tor or other secure/private connection method.
2. There are alternatives for centralized/KYC exchange such as atomic swap, P2P trading or decentralized exchange.
3. You could use mixing service (and LN in future) to prevent anyone from tracking your coins.

Also, moving to privacy and fungible cryptocurrency such as Monero is an alternative.

using a SPV client is not just about revealing your IP address. it also means the node you are connecting to can associate all your addresses together. for example you may have 1 wallet with 5 different addresses in use which are not connected and you use for different purposes and one of these has your identity (e.g. used it for withdrawal from an exchanges). when you connect to that node with or without VPN/TOR it can know these 5 addresses belong to one person, and in case they log things they can build a database based on that.

It would be hard finding out who owns a certain address because of the complex blockchain technology but I do believe that if someone put two and two together, he might somehow find a way to know who owns specific addresses. With alliance and legal arrangement, @dimastegar is right that the KYC can be used. We are attracted to using and earning cryptos because of the anonymity it provides but I do really think that no matter how much we think that we are secured, we are still not because of the internet.

Even if we're anonymous mate, somebody will find out the coins that we have through blockchain info. The government couldn't control bitcoin but they can regulate the transfers and exchanges of digital currency to local fiat. Same as what other countries did, every application for their wallet sites has to deal with strong validation as part of their kyc requirements.

i think as long as you dont tell any peoples that you have a bitcoin wallet address, they cant know if you have a bitcoin.
and if you have exchange address that required your identity to use, they can track your address.

The whole transaction history is transparent. It is stored in so-called blockhouses, where anyone can see how many bitcoins you have in your account and what operations you have performed. But to know who owns the account, it is impossible (if you do not decide to specify it).

I think it is impossible. Unless you tell someone else. Or maybe your internet device has a virus. Otherwise no one can know that you own Bitcoin. No one can control your wallet.

Bitcoin should be anonymous. But there are many ways to get the data of the trader.
Our identity can be revealed if the Government requests the KYC data to the Exchanger.
And this, probably already happened if the government Want to do it.

KYC can only be used when you purchase coins from services that require this.
I don't think they can just share that data freely with anyone, but accidents do happen.

I think it's more likely that you yourself tie your address to your identity.
Especially when you re-use your addresses a lot.

If a person does not comply with all requirements for protection from surveillance, this can be computed. But if a person is cautious, it is more difficult to calculate.

It all depends on how you treat bitcoin, if you only use 1 bitcoin address for all activities, then that person can track who owns the wallet, but this is very rare. Better to use blockchain.info to get random bitcoin addresses so people can not trace the address.

Well it hard to know how much some one have in his/her wallet's but the fact still remain that some people are good at hacking into any wallet using software that enable them to access and know how much balance is left in an account but that is possible with the help of some information about the said wallet.

Its possible for your internet provider to know what are the sites you visited mostly but its not possible to reveal how many of coins you have in your wallets or rather what transactions goes on in your wallet unless they have access to your private key.

I don't think anyone can find out that you own Bitcoin without you either mentioning it to them or them coming across something related to Bitcoin in your laptop or mobile. But the government organizations can easily find out if you own Bitcoin if you have bought it from an exchange.

Though it is very difficult for someone that you are using a bitcoin or not because bitcoin is very anonymous and it strongly believes in users satisfaction, it’s oeer to peer transactions enables customers to have very safe and confidential transactions but as we all know that nothing is impossible in this digital world, almost every thing is cracable , the all you need is to be little more careful with your every transaction and most importantly you should be very careful with your keys.

And how would you link a forum account to a bitcoin holder? There are ways to mask your IP and people rarely register email accounts with their real names and addresses.
Even if you get the real name or IP of the forum user there's no certainty that he will be a Bitcoin holder.

Government can know if you own a bitcoin, some responsible country have what we called citizens database meaning anything you do or register for is being recorded some countries even go as far to monitor their internet users activities via their network ip address so they can recall track anything website you have visited even your calls they do this to protect their country.

The important is you need to be secretly if you have bitcoin because it takes you in a risk especially if you are country that totally banned bitcoin be careful to hide your identity because nowadays their are many hackers can trace you and some are are work by goverment to trace illegal activities in a website. Be careful always.

Absolutely.  Every transaction is recorded in the blockchain, a public ledger that is shared with every participant in the bitcoin network.

When you buy bitcoins from an exchange they (or their bank) are supposed to follow know your customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering protocols to identify you.  Once your initial purchase is linked to your identity, every other transfer of Bitcoins can be traced back to you.

Title: Re: Can someone find out that you own bitcoin ?

Bitcoins are only traceable as much as IP addresses are. If you anonymize yourself wrt to the IP addresses,  that particular transaction can't be traced to you.
Of course, there are counterparties involved in any transaction, you would have to make sure that you and your transaction (including the chain of previous transactions) are anonymous wrt to your identity to the counterparty as well. It would be impossible in the general case to be untraceable, but there are many specific cases where you could do truly anonymous transactions, like purchasing and consuming a purely digital service or goods over an anonymous network.
In short it's more traceable than cash, but much less traceable than traditional payment networks.

The exchanges where you sign up to acquire your BTC would know you have it of course. If you verify and put all your information as they asked for KYC then you're completely good to go as the government needs that. Also if you keep announcing and sharing crypto news in your facebook account then people would assume you have coins.

Yes. It is possible to find out that you own bitcoin, you can not hide it forever. There are people who are curious about bitcoin so they will find a way to know more about this. They will know if you have bitcoin if you share your thoughts or information of it in social media just like in facebook, twitter or on youtube, and they will notice that you are engage of cryptocurrency when you shared some project on your social media. More over, if they will check your phone you have a different cryptowallet installed on your phone. And as long as you will not tell them how much you earn or how much you had on your wallet they will never know it.

not just bitcoin but all cryptocurrency in general are pseudo anonymous. It's up to you and how you handle your transaction and how you keep your asset.
I believe transparency is key characteristic of blockchain and with now KYC for more exchanges I believe being anonymous is now just a history.

Privacy/fungibility will be a key issue moving forward. KYC/AML and the way legal entities (corporations) interact with crypto-currencies is something that everyone should become familiar with. They are the enemy of freedom/crypto-anarchism.

There will be multiple competing methods of interacting with crypto... the system/bankers/legal version will be somewhat of a dystopian nightmare, as it currently already is. Those who know how to use decentralized exchanges and keep their jurisidiction in tact will be as free as you can get financially.

Ignore what is sold to the masses, learn why it is sold to them and how to avoid enslaving yourself... since that is the only goal of the traditional banking/legal system.

There are numerous ways you can be uncovered as a Bitcoin client. On the off chance that you don't utilize ToR or comparative programming, your ISP realizes that you visit Bitcoin assets like this discussion. Individuals leave numerous breadcrumbs that can uncover them even with no chain examination, they talk about Bitcoin straightforwardly via web-based networking media or even in private messages (locales like Facebook certainly read them), same goes for genuine - one can specify Bitcoin a couple of times with companions and all of a sudden everybody realizes that they are a Bitcoin client.

Yes because we certainly have done transactions by doing trade. Even the transfer of our bitcoin from coinbase to whatever is enough to for someone to find out that we own bitcoin. Just a single address is also enough to track all of our bitcoins in different wallets. This would only happen if the person really pursues to find out that you have it.

Yes! In my opinion, we can track up people who holds bitcoin and how much he holds on. Even you don't have any access with his wallet and even you are not a hacker, you can see the bitcoin's owner through the signature. I do that already when a familiar person sent me bitcoins in my wallet. Using the transaction, I saw his key that he used to send the BTC. Therefore, I know already his wallet eventhough I don't have any access with it.

If you keep your bitcoins for a long time somewhere in cold storage, hardly anyone will know about them. However, if you go with them to exchanges and exchangers, while registering and leaving your information, then there is no question of anonymity here. It should be taken into account that bitcoin is only relatively anonymous and if you will simply carry out trading activities, even without leaving your data openly anywhere, then the secret services will be able to easily calculate you if you so desire.

Bitcoin users are anonymous unless a holder announces his ownership to a particular wallet. It is possible to view the amount of Bitcoin in a specific wallet but appears almost impossible to know the holder of that wallet.

That's right wallet address can be seen but to reveal the real owner is not possible not unless the user itself declares his identity, that's one of those reasons why many people support and use the chain, they wanted to hide their money inside btc and aimed for long term hold and continue to invest without a trace coming from other people.

I really do not know how they found it. Are they capable of programming or as a hacker? I'm also confused about this issue.

If you do not protect your account or your computer system, hackers can get the bitcoin in your wallet. No one will know if you own a bitcoin-only if you do not share that information

as long as you keep basic security measures i do not think so, like no show off, private mails like protonmail, no kyc to crypto related sites, etc.

I think if we trace the traces of transfer, we can know who owns bitcoins. When you need to turn bitcoins into fiat or when you pick up from the exchange, it's easy to know whose account it is.

But of youre not often doing that,or i mean don't usually use social media to discuss bitcoin then its impossible for them to track that were a bitcoin owner

Like me i am not using my social media account about cryptocurrency..i don't even participate social media campaigns so I believe theres no reason for me to be known as bitcoin user

Yes anybody can know that you've bitcoin. There are lots of way it can be detected. In that if your device ip address is been tracked either on mibile device or laptop device. Again if your private key or login key was mistaken revealed somehow then somehow one can know to have bitcoin. Only that if one is using a secure VPN, there i don't think any device can be tracked by that.

If you have some crypto apps on your phone or notebook and you leave your browsing history then other people can guess if you have crypto or not. But if you store it in hardware wallet/cold storage and never talk about it to anyone then no one will know that you own it. Even if they know you own bitcoin, they don't know the wallet address so they can't check how much bitcoin you have.

Bitcoin is anonymous, actually it's clear that no one knows that we have Bitcoin, unless we tell them. But another story is, if there are people who are fun or want to do evil to us, by tracking our private wallet and hacking our account.

I suppose for now we are having an open opportunity to be anonymous while using bitcoin but government can force us to apply our documents to the Bitcoin wallet that we are using in the future.

If they know the address of your bitcoin wallet then yes they can find out that you own bitcoin by check it on blockchain and view the address. If you are not telling anyone then no one will know you own bitcoin. Just keep it secret and don't tell anyone if you don't want people know about your coins.

I was following a thread and was amused by some of the answers. I'm interested to see how much people know.

We are all aware how people tend to do something illegal in the sense of using bitcoin for it is commonly hiding someones identity because of us going incognito after the bitcoin system. But I believe that if you are to do something that surpasses and trigger cyber crime then there is a possibility that you can be spotted.
