Title: What is the maximum time for bitcoin to reach
Post by: worldinacoin on September 19, 2011, 02:57:14 AM
I send some bitcoin to myself.  The bitcoin client is on my current computer.  I used blockexplorer it was suppose to be transacted but I still receive zero transactions on the bitcoin client.  What is the max time for the client to be able to receive the bitcoin?

What was the block count at when you sent your bitcoins?

Usually its 5-6 confirmations later. Depending on difficulty it could be a few minutes or a few hours.

Cheers

Thanks, my block count seems to be quite far away from current, still a lot to download, a long time to wait I guess :) .

The time for a confirmation should always be ~10 minutes irregardless of difficulty.  That is the entire reason for variable difficulty.

Next time you setup a fresh wallet consider grabbing the blockchain directly from:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/Bitcoin/blockchain/

That will have the new wallet up and running much faster.

and I will put this here just to keep any disasters from happening:

Quote
WARNING:
Only use these data files IF YOU HAVE AN EMPTY (or no) WALLET. While it "may" be fine to put these in with an existing wallet, and use the -rescan option, the target audience here is new bitcoin installs with an empty wallet.

Which folder to put this in?  Thanks for the great idea.

Just check the readme.txt at that link here it is for quick reference, but please read it at each download in case any changes have been made:

Instructions:

- Unzip and copy blk*.dat files into your bitcoin data directory
- Remove any database/log* files from your bitcoin data directory
- Run bitcoin or bitcoind

What this does:
- Resets the bitcoin block database and block database index
to the state it was in at the time the snapshot was taken.
- If you have a wallet with unprocessed transactions, the client
may not recognize them. Thus, the above warning: Only use these
data files IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY HAVE A WALLET.

Check https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet#Locating_Bitcoin.27s_data_directory for the location.
The easiest way in windows is: Start, Run, "explorer %APPDATA%\Bitcoin"
without the quotes.

Thanks Exonumia, I am a bit thick headed :) .  I got my bitcoins.  Lesson is just as long as my bitcoin client has the current number of blocks, the transactions will be nearly immediately or I will have to wait for the client to download or follow what Exonumia mentioned.  A lot of things to learn here, but thanks to the experienced members for being generous with their advice and help.
