Title: Expiration of sMerits
Post by: andreijoaquin on June 19, 2018, 05:09:35 AM
Merit system has been in the circulation for almost 5 months and as of now the issue of earning merits for new members and even those who have been here for a long period is still a hot topic.
I think if sMerits will have an expiration date, people will be obliged or will become more active in giving merits to others instead of losing it, this will actually helps many members like me.

Theymos has said that he may consider decaying sMerit in the future.
In an ideal scenario, the flow from the merit sources should be sufficient in the forum. In any case, sMerits were going to get used up at some point or the other.

I would rather let all my sMerits decay to zero rather than give them to some shitposter hoping to rank up. :)

If you think you are worthy of getting merits, do not ask for them or make such threads about merit. Keep posting and adding to the discussions going on in the forum. You will be recognized at times and manage to obtain some merits.

Precisely what is the reason for that? You can still contribute to the forum with this rank. Any other "Special" ability that I dont know of? ::)

Perhaps this prompts users to spend their sMerits but needs to be analyzed. Is there a shortfall in spending merits or not?.
As I said it takes analysis, a six month period is sufficient to evaluate the merit system and answer all questions.
I have about 30 sMerits, and expiration date will not affect my decision to spend or not.

All this talk about sMerits expiring is looking through the wrong end of the telescope. Expiring sMerits just loses them to the community. Encouraging the creation of better posts will lead to the awarding of those merits, and this is a far better solution.

I would not like a hidden force to spend my sMerits. Unless I am not a merit source1 I am not obliged by anything that I HAVE TO spend my sMerits in a certain time frame. However it's a moral responsibility. if I see a post is merit worthy and if I have available sMerits then I will gladly spend it.

1Becoming a merit source is kind of public responsibility to perform the job, IMO.

Rightly said. If I was the admin I would announce it all of sudden with 1-2 day time period. All the spammers will try to merit their alts in hurry and we will have next batch of merit abusers ready to be punished. Makes the work easier for the staff. :)

There would be even less merits in circulation.
People would not merit shitposters, and they would lose their smerits and good posters would not get merited either....

No, it won't help one bit.  Why?  Because it's of no consequence to the person whose merit is going to decay.  Do you think anyone really cares if they run out of smerit?  I'm a staunch supporter of the merit system and I've tried to give my smerits out judiciously, but if I lose them it's no skin off my back.  And do you think the average bounty shitposter is going to care?  Probably not unless it means he can't sell them, and that's not going to help the people who deserve to have their posts merited.

I think having smerits decay is a silly idea.  The only thing it'll mean for sure is that there's less to go around, and there already isn't enough.

Putting an expiration date on smerit will further pressurize members to issue merits wantonly.

But why do so many seemingly hoard smerit? Does everyone know the reason for merit score? How do you evaluation a post worthy of merit? Answers to these questions will help, I believe.

If they have an extirpation date then I would probably just give much more merits for certain posts ie double or triple them instead of just handing out 1-5 per post. I certainly wouldn't just desperately give them out to any old random lower-ranked member just because they're going to be wasted otherwise. This suggestion really won't help you out at all unless you're making quality posts and are already receiving merits. I would work on the quality of posts rather than trying to change the merit system because the former will be more fruitful here.

I do not know either merit is limited or unlimited. If it is limited and it can be expired soon there will be no sMerit.

I'm fine with them not expiring, why force people to use up their smerits? That's like demonetizing a currency but not allowing any way to exchange them for new cash.

I care more about how slow it "regenerates," if ever. I've been stingy, only handing out 1 at a time. Now I only have 9 left and becoming more miserly than Scrooge.  ;D
