I am sure a lot of us are serious investors with a diversified profile. How much of your investment capital is locked into bitcoins? I am just getting back into the market after a few months but I plan to invest 10-20% of my available funds in bitcoins. Very volatile market but I find it a safer investment than most that I dip into.

Are you joking? The only thing that carries higher risk than Bitcoins is buying Italian government bonds.

None so far but would like to put some in. I will just try to earn some first though.

Granted, I haven't been watching prices long, but it SEEMS that Bitcoins aren't any riskier than normal stock. Maybe they'll go back up to $20 each, maybe they'll drop down to $0.01 per BTC, but regular stock carries the same sort of risk.

Be nice if it was more stable, true, but I don't think it's much riskier than any other sort of investment. Just keep your computer safe from being hacked.

Normal stock can go down because dumb CEO decided to do something dumb.

My investments are all in bitcoin rigs, never in any of the so call stock markets or forex exchanges of Bitcoins.

Not really. It happens. A lot of stocks are relatively stable (Walmart, IBM, Apple; I think), but the majority can trade pretty wildly, depending on number of shares and whether the brokers had salmon or chicken for lunch. That's how day traders make tons of money.

same here. about $800 in parts from ebay along with linux got me to two dedicated rigs for a combined 1.5 Ghash rate. cranks out about 1 btc a day on slush's pool.

That's not fair.  Bitcoin is probably as risky as Greek government bonds, or maybe a Zimbabwean FOREX.


Normal stocks don't fluctuate between $20 and one cent (bitcoin does).  Everything in this post is wrong.


With the possible exception of penny stocks, which are the stock market equivalent of roulette, Stocks generally tend to be stable.  Why?  Because they have things like the SEC, which makes sure that companies are reporting their earnings properly, aren't running off with shareholder's money *ahem*mybitcoin*ahem* or things of that nature.

Bitcoin dropped 20% in one day because pictures of Bill Cosby showed up on this forum, while 'normally' the price fluctuates by %30 every day.  Magic: The Gathering Online Exchange was hacked and bitcoin crashed to one cent, all they did was call a do-over and reset everything the next day.

I'm not convinced, I'm only putting a small % of my money in bit coins.

In my view their a very high risk investment, no stocks bounce up and down (on a daily basis) like bitcoins.

Financially, zero.  Timewise, I've done quite a bit of research.

Have in total invested around 50$ in buying bitcoins and about 150$ in a mining rig, so not that much yet but planing to upgrade my mining rig a bit :)

Here in Italy stocks can't fluctuate that much because there is a protection system that avoid any fluctaution over the 10% (both in high or in low) in a day halting the trade on that stock if that's occours. A lot of times there are stocks that can loose over 7-10% in a day, and are not penny stock but stocks in the mib20 (the top 20 stocks of the italian market).

But you're true that bitcoin is a lot more weak system: is really easy for speculator move the price up or down.

The bulk of my costs are in graphic cards, when things really get so bad they I have to exit, at least the graphic cards are high ended cards that will give some value.

I have invested more than 12k USD in them. However my builds are also set up as gaming rigs should bitcoin fail and I need to recover my money.

I invested ~5.000 euro for bitcoins Price per bitcoin 3.50 USD at the huge crash:) So it was a great deal.!

I meant I can sell off the gaming rigs. I built them with 955's and some i3s. Everything is semi rice or good looking. I will have no problem getting 70% of what I put into them back if I need to sell them fast. I might even get more not sure.

I'm currently trying to figure out how much I feel comfortable investing. I know the difficulty will continue to climb and the value of a block will drop from 50 to 25 coins eventually... hopefully the bubble won't burst soon!

Why invest in bitcoins when you can get in early on one of the alternate chains? Really, what makes bitcoin so special anyway? From what I can see, it has a network effect monopoly and the strongest core dev team and that's about it.

One of these days one of the alternate chains is going to take over. However, I suspect you won't be able to get rich off of it. That's because I think the one that's going to take over will have value stability built into it's design, and that's the whole reason it will take over.

$130 for a 5830, and about $100 extra on the 2 cards that I was replacing anyway but I would of bought lesser versions of. IE got 6770 instead of a 6670 for the HTPC (replacing a 3850), and a 6870 instead of a 6850 (replacing a 4850) for the daily use rig.

helps that I was already set up pretty good for just dropping in cards: PC Power and Cooling and Antec PSUs, decent cases with good cooling etc. just add cards, software and go.

Well i am new at bitcoins but to be honest i will not count my hardware since i already had these
But i would like to replace them for new so you might need to make a list of the money spend on the system
Now even if i would not count the hardware i have running now as a test on bitcoin, i currently wonder if it even is possible to not loose money on it.
Considering i live in the netherlands which has the biggest price on electricity, with a cost of 0.44 cent a Kwh its probably even not worth trying if i see what the current pool is showing me after some hours of running.
Now before someone starts babbling but on that or this site they say it is 0.23 cents a Kwh .... those are except the energy tax which has to be payed yearly and transport costs which is about another 0.09 cents extra and last and not least they count again another monthly fee for using the meter in the house ... these costs are separate from the normal bill
To make it even worse is that over these amounts they again make you pay 19% extra tax.
Guess who is gaining the most out of all this .... indeed the governements which are also the major share holders of those companies... profit in every way possible.

Don't invest any money you can't afford to lose. Bitcoins are wildly speculative. You should assume they will go to zero.

Sooner or later they will go to 0. Only question is will it go to 100$ first and for how many years will this work out:)

Just gotten into the Bitcoin mining game about 2 weeks back and have obviously missed the high times of the coin (they'll be back, I can feel it!) but I find the whole concept very intriguing.

Spent about 800€ for my rig (no open frame case or build into a shopping basket, not that there's anything wrong with that ;) just wasn't an option here). 2x 5830 + 2x 5850, still waiting for the 5850's to arrive so right now I've been mining with ~640 mh/s for a couple of days and I already am at a total of ~3.5 BCs. :D

Did a lot of research until I considered building a rig of my own and for me it's not about the money (or breaking even anytime soon), well of course it is too but mainly the journey is its own reward building a rig generating currency. I wouldn't complain though if rates were going back up there to the $30 mark.

But for past 4 days while im working i had my GTX 560 ti mining away.
Just to start making some BTC..

I'm living in China, and only heard about bitcoin recently. Now I'm really obcessive with this idea, and invested 600 dollars.

I  wank 2K to spend on goods and 2K to sit on...

For me, the jury's out.  I think there's potential there, and I believe the bottom's either in or close to in.  I don't have a target amount yet, and my present holding are minuscule (though I've been watching bitcoin since the end of 2010).

Once I get out of noob-jail, I have some interesting products that some folks may be interested in to sell and start building a BTC base.  In time and after building up a reputation, I'm interested in operating a small-scale exchange and escrow service for the community, as well as offering some unique products that will help grow the BTC community.  My expertise is in the privacy area (a PT, for those that know what that is) with a focus on privacy technology, private banking, offshore corporate structures, 2nd citizenships, etc.

Started with hardware I already had laying around, and electricity that was a flat rate, included in rent. (So, basically free, since rent had to be paid whether I ran my rig or not!)

Then reinvested the "Free" earnings for hardware.
Then reinvested again (and again, and again...) to triple my BTC
Now I finally pay for power so, that's the extent of MY monetary investment. I make plenty of BitCoins/month mining, to pay that bill!

2k so far, and I've made about 1/2 of that back before the price dropped below 8.  I'm holding onto them now, but still mining 24/7.

Just started working on mining my first bitcoin. But I am only in a couple hundred dollars. If the bills don't kill me, I may dedicate a box and a couple GPUs for 24/7 service now that Winter is almost here.

About $360 which is what I spent on my 2x 6870s for mining.  They paid for themselves then prices tanked and it was no longer profitable for me to keep mining.  Think I'm going to start again so I can have some fun in the poker rooms.

About £1500 in hardware. I've also purchased a fair few (£1k-£2k) BTCs while they were in the $1-$2 range which I offloaded at $20-$30 per BTC during the boom. I reinvested a lot of those USD back into bitcoins when the price dropped below $5.

In coins themselves, probably only $150. Mining rigs, probably about $1000, considering I used a considerable amount of old hardware.

I don't see why it wouldn't be feasible, given a large enough investment, but at current difficulty rates and widespread ASIC availability looming, I wouldn't take the risk.

Currently about 2k$ back when they were 20 each and I heard about Cyprus's taxation of its citizens

About 450$ in May 2011 (2xATI 5830 + FSP Epsilon 700W + P5K Premium +2GB DDR2 + E2140 + 80GB HDD). The conmponents were used!

I've tried CPU mining and earned 0.00000522 BTC. ;D. I'm going to be rich.  I cannot GPU mine with the graphic I own  I just wanted to see how bitcoin mining and pools works.

I invested about $10k into Bitcoin rigs, that was a few years ago.

It's strange, I have not invested little to any FIAT money into Bitcoin, however I have invested a lot of time and skills into Bitcoin. In fact most of the actual fiat money I have invested is for computer and software.
I have spent countless hours working on projects which I have been assigned to earn Bitcoin.
So I guess, it depends on what you mean invested? If you mean Fiat money, then not a lot.

I don't use BTC as an investment tool. I use it as a currency. I buy and sell BTC when I need them. Right now I've got about $150 dollars tied up, but over a normal week it fluctuates between $0 and $5,000.

Our investors have spend a lot of money into developing technology of developing ultra fast and efficient miners for today. Simple 14nm technology design starts from 5 Million dollars.

Of all my investment capital, I currently have 5.8% invested in Bitcoin.
Of those 5.8%, two thirds are in ASICMINER shares for dividend growth, the rest is "cash" Bitcoins.
I am also mining Phenixcoins with hardware that I already own (no additional investment).

Bitcoin is an excuse to spend money on computer parts. I built two computers generating 4Gh/s and when I added up the cost, it came to $5000 (including small A/C unit cooling both) It was a lot of fun designing and building the stystem. Will it earn the money back? Maybe. But it was worth the fun I have.

Bought 3 x 7970 Radeon GPUs ($400 each) a few months back and plan to use them for gaming and opencl programming even if they never make the money back mining bitcoins.

I'm not planning to invest money in bitcoin, i will only use it as currency. Anyway i'm trying to understand the bitcoin world, maybe one day i will change my mind!

I don't remember what I paid for the 15 BTC I bought early in 2011, but it was very little, probably about $1USD per coin, and was purchased to do some testing for a web client. He scratched the project and I left the coins in a wallet on my hard drive. Didn't give 'em much thought at all until this last week and just for grins, decided to see if I could restore that wallet. Copied the wallet to my laptop, where I installed the updated program and the coins were intact. Nice chunk of change now!

I would suggest 5 to 7% into Bitcoins, 10 - 20% in Gold and Silver.
