Title: From Beginner to Member in 80 posts
Post by: joulion86 on June 25, 2018, 09:45:28 AM
Hi all.

I started in this Forum a few months back, and I found it very hard to getting heard, so this is why I wanted to encourage new members to still use this forum, even when it can be a little frustrating at the beginning. Here are my tips for beginners that really want to start using this forum more often and rank up gathering merits over time, and most importantly, getting heard and respected around here:

- Begin to read a lot, before commenting on things.
- Try to understand the concept of signature campaigns, and everything that is connected to it (spammy threads, people getting paid to post 20x per week). Then you will understand what kind of posts you should 100% avoid trying to post: posts with 2-3 sentences, that are not part of the conversation of a thread but simply reply to the original posters question, disregarding the whole conversation that happened before you.
- Always read through all comments, try to quote posters before you if you have something to comment, add or critisize about what someone else said.
- Try to stay on top of your English, proof read your posts and make sure there are as few mistakes as possible (it shows your respect towards possible readers). If you are not very good at English you can try sites like https://www.deepl.com to translate your sentences into decent English.
- Have a point you are trying to make and if it resonates with people, you will quickly see how more people respond to you and take you more serious.

If you are new, feel free to ask questions here that I will answer.

If you are experienced in this forum, do you have anything to add?

I am not that much experienced like a Legendary or Hero however I think this will give you some more encouragement:

List of members achieved 0 to 100 and plus merits (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4104852.msg38101766#msg38101766)
Self development and BitcoinTalk [Must read for new members] (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3776827.0)

OP: You are doing good IMO. Good work.

Unfortunately most people in the Newbie-Jr Member range don't even exert a bit of effort to make decent replies; then you see them complaining that the higher-ranks don't notice their posts and only give merit to Sr members and higher. It's really stupid. I'm really thankful for this merit update.

Thanks for that. I strongly believe this is one of the most important advice you can give to others. There are too many users in here joining bounties and spamming all over the forum with these kind of nonsenses as "Bitcoin to the moon".

- Always read through all comments, try to quote posters before you if you have something to comment, add or critisize about what someone else said.

Seconding this one, please just read. Sometimes I've tried to give merits by a giving-away-merits-thread, but most of the people didn't bother to read the rules, it is annoying and kind of sad. One is really willing to award merits and there is nothing but frustration as a result.

I would add:
- Do not plagiarize. There are many people in the forum trying to earn merits and they just copy-paste a good article thinking they are going to earn some. Well, this is against the rules and they can get banned from the forum permanently.
- Do not care too much for merits. There are many people really obsessed with merits, and the common result is to obtain zero.

Thanks for the thread, OP, and congrats.

You know what? Totally agree with you OP.

This place has some brilliant information and if people just looked and learned a little before making assumptions or asking ridiculous questions then they'd likely not be discouraged or feel like the whole site is against them!

I've been here since Mid-May, only been posting 2-3 weeks, and in my short time here i've went from thinking i knew a lot about crypto, to realizing that in comparison to some people here I actually know very little!  :D. That said, I do try to browse on here as much as i can to educate myself.

The people on here that are moaning are the same people who's post history is full of useless spammy comments from bounty hunts- don't get me wrong. if you're here and participating then sure! Use a signature for a bounty, you'd be daft not too. But people are expecting a pat on the back for contribution when in actual fact- they havent made a contribution!  :D

Great to hear some positive feedback anyway and good post!  :)

I am amazed about this good feedback thank you guys. And a merit by Theymos himself  :o I did really not expect that!

List of members achieved 0 to 100 and plus merits (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4104852.msg38101766#msg38101766)
Self development and BitcoinTalk [Must read for new members] (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3776827.0)

Also very good resources. Definately a good read!

I would add:

- Do not care too much for merits. There are many people really obsessed with merits, and the common result is to obtain zero.

Thank you, these are good additions to my points.
