Title: [FIXED on serverfault.com] 3 [up to 4 now!] btc for debain help
Post by: Anonymous on September 24, 2011, 11:48:43 PM
I can no longer boot my server up. I get the following issue:

Loading, please wait... Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

_
and my system just sits there. It occured after I removed upstart apt-get remove upstart

and then rebooted because I always reboot the system after I run any apt-get command.

When I run the system in recovery mode I get a kernel panic.

Please help me,

macintosh264

I will give you 3 4 bitcoins if you can solve this. PLEASE HELP ME. PLEASE!!!!!! URGENT LEVEL 10

Oh, man, you really fucked up.  Here are the packages which depend on upstart, and which would have been removed accordingly when you removed it.

Code:
met% apt-cache rdepends upstart
upstart
Reverse Depends:
  usplash
  dbus
  ubuntu-mid-default-settings
  netscript-2.4-upstart
  molly-guard
  live-config-upstart
  bootchart
  ureadahead
  ubuntu-minimal
  sysvinit-utils
  mysql-server-5.1
  mountall
  initscripts
  initscripts
  friendly-recovery
  dbus
  avahi-daemon
met%

If I were in this situation, I would probably reinstall.  The alternative I would try first would be

1) Boot from a live CD

2) Mount the hard drive

3) chroot into the hard drive

4) apt-get install upstart and the above packages.

But it's not guaranteed to work without a lot more that 3 BTC of effort (or even 20 BTC, at least the way I figure my own time.)

Well, I think I have found my solution on server fault, but this is my alternative. I have basically done exactly what you said, just one or two steps out of place. And I scp'd all my stuff to my personal computer. This is thread closed until further notice.
