Title: How I lost my coin.
Post by: crystalworld on July 01, 2018, 09:14:23 AM
I have lost Hugh amount of bitcoin, and I believe some person's here too have gone through same. Can we please share our experience and lessons.

My story :My wallet was hacked, by God knows who. That was 2017 may. I logged in to my blockchain wallet to notice that 0.9  btc I have been accumulating Since 2016 has been taken. Leaving less than $5 worth of bitcoin for me.

My lesson :  don't trust anyone with your crypto, laptop or password. Because I believe someone close to me did that.

I see many people loosing their coins just because they were not that much concerned about privacy. They shared their account information with others. So, it is very important not to share account passwords and other information to anyone. Moreover, it is necessary to have proper knowledge of doing transactions.

Why? and how did you lost your coin? Is it being hacked by someone? are you being phished out? or you are disclosing your private keys? Well many of the members here had gone with losing also and that includes  big exchanges that are being target also by the hackers or hijackers. The problem with some digital wallet are the security that could be breach out by these hijackers or hackers.

HOW did you lose your Bitcoin anyway? Does someone take it from your wallet? or someone hacks your account? or simply you entered a phishing site accidentally?

or perhaps you mistakenly place the wrong Bitcoin wallet? Check the transaction carefully since the transfer history is there.

You didnt stated the reason on how did you lost your bitcoins. So how? Most people that lost their cryptocurrency is because of either scam or hack and people that mostly experiencing this is those who dont know how to secure their coin by themselves and also not aware of this scams. Another reason to lost a coin is because of forgotten private key. I havent lost any of my cryptocurrency so I cant share any stories about this.

If you were hacked, i recommend you to store your crypto assets on a hardware device like Trezor or Ledger. I hope you didn't have a big percentage of your savings invested in the bitcoins that you have lost. Many people have lost coins in the beginning of their crypto journey, but still managed to make nice profits afterwards.

BE safe while trading never your private key of ether with any website of google forms , if any asks sure they will stole your coins from wallet.
never fall into trap who says this coin will be pumped or dumped ,they just make money by publicity noting else believe me

When you are always in a rush to sell your coin, you will always regret it some years to come. That is how the game. At least sell them at a cool price and do something good with that FIAT. Or you can decide to split and invest again with the half.

I think that in the world of crypto currency you need to be very careful. Because now there is a lot of speculation. You need to choose a good purse, you need to take your accounts. Keep your information secret. In the beginning, well, you need to invest a lot. Start with small sums and so on.

How did you lose it? Was your wallet hacked or you lost on wrong trading decisions? I fill very sorry for people who lose money, as it is for most of us it is very hard earned money, but you should go through this and you have a great opportunity as the price is very low right now, could recover and earn some money. Good luck

I think it’s not anybody’s fault
But best opinion is
If you cannot handle the pressure that goes with trading nor have the experience in trading
You need to stay out of it and just hodl your coins
It’s better than your loss
Hopefully you learn a lot from this thread

How exactly did you lost your bitcoin. If you want to share it with the forum then the forum can find what causes the loss of yours. I think if your private keys do not get leaked then there is no way your wallet can be accessible to others. May be somehow your keys got leaked.

Me too - just a few days ago.  I lost 5 ETH to scammers, thinking I was investing in the Iagon ICO.  Scammers impersonated the Iagon CEO on telegram and created a fake Iagon telegram group that looked official.  It was my fault for not being more vigilant.

So to be safe from the thieves, you will need to have some general knowledge of this market and technology. So be careful about your security.

Yes, more knowledge is needed to trade. The ability to analyze market conditions must be owned, otherwise you should be prepared to lose. Long-term investment is very good, just need patience to make a profit.

I never lost any amount of my ether or nor bitcoin because I have used the hardware wallet to store them all. It gives me possibility to put more security to my amount. If you are using trezor and there will be a lot of verification before you can access your amount. Try to use the safest way to store your amount.

You need to explain also here the loss of Bitcoin that you experience it why? What caused it? So that the experience you want to know from us can be explained and become a new science for all of us who move on crypto.
So far I have not experienced the loss of Bitcoin. But I can mention that such incidents seem to be done deliberately, given the activity of crypto directly related to the internet.

Well indeed, but there are other reasons for losing coins is because of a forgotten private key. I have never lost cryptocurrency so I can not share my story about it. But for most people losing their cryptocurrency is due to fraud or hack and the people who mostly experience this are those who do not know how to secure their own coins and are also unaware of this scam.

I think they are 2 scenario, as you said maybe someone close to you got access to your laptop or password and second your a victim of phishing.
Phishing is common on emails pretending to be your wallet but it comes from different email deceiving you, to avoid this install some phishing protection and always check the url of the site before entering important details.

This type of lost means that it is not because of crypto declining that is the cause of the huge lost. It is because of negligence in the part of the person or too much trust to someone. We should be extra careful with our investment security.

you probably have some virus on your computer installing it would be the best even somebody have your laptop password. blockchain doesn't authorize any logins without email authorization if you have the basic security unless the hacker have your email and password always have 2fa on your emails. buying a hardware wallet will be the best option if you want your tokens to be really safe.

Use it as experience and never repeat the same mistakes. My experience say, if someone send you link in many platform ( email, social media, telegram ) don't click and ignore the person, unless you know and have interest with him. Another thing is, never save your crypto in long time on your wallet. In this case you should fast and replace your asset into currency or personal wallet that only you know the password. Do that and never give up, good luck to you.

Scammers also use money to scam, just like doing fake website for phishing, I was a victim of fake myetherwallet phishing, being new to ether is very risky, I lost all my token and eth all worth $1000 after clicking google ads on a search result for "myetherwallet" and log in using my code.

My tip is to always search how to use and secure a wallet before using as well in online wallet if its safe or fake.

Thankfully never lost any coins, but I think you need to trust someone atleast, although that is difficult. For instance my father has all my secret keys incase something happens to me.

I get the caution, and it's definitely needed, but you also don't want to lose all those coins should something happen to you, better your family get them or something.

I'm sorry about that loss, that must have hurt so much. Never trust friends.

In this case you should keep and watch out for securing your wallet from everything, either your friends or your family. If you connect your wallet on the internet you should pay attention to delete the history of the browser to keep your wallet safe. It all depends on you how to secure it and if you neglect to do so you can lose property in your wallet.

Thanks for your information. I felt I had to be wary of the people around me. Wherever possible keep your private key in a safe place. I recommend buying wallet hardware because the security level is better than an online wallet.

Thats why I always split my amount in various exchange and wallets. Suppose I have 1 btc then I split them in 10 parts so if I loose some amount I didn't regret for that.

Thank you for sharing, and I am sorry to hear it. And a lesson like this will be useful for anyone especially beginners.

This is the best option! Buying a hardware wallet will increase the security level of your wallet, but do not share with anyone the words for recovery.

A very nice of you to share this kind of experience. And I agree with you that don’t  trust anyone with your password, private key etc in this world of crypto and even the outside world in terms of money some people really having the evil plans just to get coins. So the only person you need to trust is yourself, except to your Wife if she is into crypto.

Your first mistake was leaving your coins in a hot wallet, a hot wallet like an online wallet is fine if you are going to do some spending so you can always access your wallet from your smartphone but you should only carry some small amount of money but when you are accumulating coins you should do it in a clean machine, a hardware wallet or a paper wallet.

margin trading is not easy, but the profits that can you get from margin trading are also great. I advise you to do artbitraging rather than margin trading if you have not experience in margin trading. artibitraging I think is easier if the moment is good

I see many people loosing their coins just because they were not that much concerned about privacy. They shared their account information with others. So, it is very important not to share account passwords and other information to anyone. Moreover, it is necessary to have proper knowledge of doing transactions.
Privacy has really been a huge challenge for a very lot of newbies in this space and I wonder why some people do not equip themselves with enough knowledge to be able to know how to do better when it comes to security of their funds or their wallets.

In fact, his last statement of not trusting anyone with their crypto, laptop or password shows that he must have by himself ended up screwing things up by not paying so much attention to security and that is one bad move to make in this space.

Do not trust anyone with your passwords, moreover, even in a purse you can enter better only when you need to make a transaction. The main thing is to make a bookmark of the purse, otherwise you can not see the substitution of the site name and give your password to scammers. Be careful, I'm sorry for you.  :-[

Back to the theme, there was a period for me in crypto when I took part in all airdrops and bounties I met. Remembering all the different passwords would cause a headache for me. Writing them down is also a bad idea. So I was using the same login-password for many sites and it looks like that one of them was a bad guy and they used this to get access to many other accounts. It was not that much in a result, but when you're in the beginning, it may hurt you

That was unfortunate and this would really be always a lesson learn for anyone where we do experience such loss before we do already aware on such thing. We can eventually avoid the possible risk and don't let that thing happen to us if we are just sensible and responsible to possible actions specially on keeping out safe our wallet into other people and besides blockchchain wallet or any other web-wallets in the net isn't really ideal to store up coins for long term.

Out of curiosity, how that happened?

Did someone hacked you, you enter to phishing site or you simple had keylogger and didn't run antivirus?

Blockchain isn't really easy to hack, if you turn on security(2fa and everything) i don't think anyone can bypass that.

I almost lost 5 ETH about 1,5 years ago. I sent to exchange 5 Eth from local wallet and did not see any changes so I repeated again until transaction passed. In few days I mined 5 Eth and suddenly they disappeared. It was bug in Eth wallet related to my 2-nd transaction. I was lucky to reveal it in time. I created another order on crypto exchange and took money back.

Even you are using hardware or paper wallet still there is no 100% assurance of being since we need those keys for online transaction. Only it is less possibility of being hack. The securities we bond is our own handling of private keys and mostly people get hack due to visiting questionable sites. That's why we need to check it first before doing anything.

I dont have any experience like this, that someone close to you then do get your bitcoin,  thats very insane.
I got lost my bitcoin from the moment that ive forgot my 12 phrase, i remember that i do save it on a notepad inside the download folder, then when the times that i need to recover my fund, i lost that notepad elsewhere and i cannot find it. Then i realize that i erase all the documents inside that folder.

Lesson is dont store your back-up phrase on any gadgets, write it on a paper and hide it in a very safest place that you know.

You can't blame it to anyone but yourself :). Why don't you set up 2FA for your wallet? I think if your 2FA security everything would be different :). At least this hacker still left $5 for you. LOL. Try to be careful next time and don't forget to set up password for your computer as well to make sure that you're the only one who can access to your computer :)

I've also lost my token on my wallet nor do I understand why someone can steal my coins just like that. several months ago I was very disappointed with the situation. because I can not do anything for what happened to me.
the lesson that I can take is never give a secret key to anyone for any reason. beware of phishing websites, hackers lurk you

I think everybody should use a hardwallet or special offline computer for holding cryptocurrencies. There are a lot of stories about loosing coins from unsafe wallets.

My first and I hope last case when I loose some of my coins. I think in some of google table I filllednot of my eth address but my secret password. I think so) now I hide password in place were hard to find and made same mistake)
Ouch, that hurts man, but I have seen this in action, when I invested in an ico I received lots of messages on slack with links that were phishing links, knowing it was a scam I never clicked on them but some people did and they were asked for their private key and some people were naive enough to give that information away, as you may guess they lost all their coins.

with the price now of course many people who suffer losses because it bought at a price much more expensive especially if the person bought bitcoin at the beginning of the year at which time it was very expensive
but if you want to be patient you may be able to reduce your losses because bitcoin still has a great chance to get back to the high price

Why don't you use hardware wallet? I think that everyone who has large amount of BTC or other alts must have this device. One wallet and no problems!

The best way to protect yourself - don't tell anyone about your assets.

The problem is usual during trading mostly hacked specially if the person involve not have enough knowledge during trading time. But i know you have an idea for trading. additonal inputs, just dont open many times your wallet for you to your wallet not be visible to the hacker. If you want to just open it to etherscan for security.

Sorry to hear about your big loss. 0.9 BTC obviously a huge amount. But the good thing is you are recovering, right? Good luck with your future.
Your complaint about crypto is a bitter truth. Everything has a chance to attack by the hackers. Laptop, PC or smartphone all devices can hack anytime. That's why I suggest you buy a hardware wallet like ledger or trezor. Never save your wallet key or phrase code in online. Try to write in offline and use hardware wallet to avoid all those scam and hacks. Though you mentioned who can steal your money. I suggest to catch him/ her and give a lesson for his sin.

Didn't you get notification when someone tries to log into your account? Blockchain wallet have this feature but this doesn't mean it is not vulnerable. We should either use hardware wallet or paper wallet to store our bitcoins for long term holding. Web wallets like block chain is not fully secure and sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry to lose your big bitcoin, which is important now that you're back to recover bitcoin for investment. all things can happen to the world of crypto let alone many big risks that we will face, whether the assets we have hit by hack or stolen by our closest people who also know all that we have, our most important ourselves to remain cautious things like that do not happen again. my advice if you have a savings account of money, now is the right time to buy bitcoin while the price is still quite low and affordable.

It is a sad thing to see that you lose your money or even hear that someone else did. I'm sorry for that. I would advise that if you still have some spare funds, you should still consider investing in a secure coin. Do not let this loss hold you from securing your finance future by investing in this great market. Be sure to be more safe in your dealings this time around. Only invest in coins you have technically analysed and are sure it's a good investment.

My reason: Don't jump into cryptos as a newbie without learning much about cryptos.

Lesson learned, I was dumb.

I was fortunate not to make that kind of mistake but sadly many people do becaus ethey sell btc in order to buy some coin and that coin dips at the same time when BTC rises and you have a double loss. I try not to sell my BTC, just buy more from time to time. It'll worth very much in the future.

I also had this situation, and it happened in November or December 2017. Then I stole$ 2,000 worth of coins. When I went into my wallet and saw the transfer transactions and zeros on the account, I was just paralyzed a few minutes from what I saw. It was very sad and sad, because the money from the sky I did not fall and I was sorry to lose them. But then I began to study the security of their wallets and came to the conclusion that it is safer to have in the Arsenal of "cold wallet". In fact, a very convenient topic. the password can only be entered manually, it is not connected to a computer or laptop. However, if you have assumptions, that you robbed your familiar, then recommend you at all on the future go about how, how many and what you invested and that you have such a web wallet. Because people are different and do not always have all good intentions, so it is better to keep quiet about their money transactions.

i will suggest to use Escrow service,

if about trading scams
BE safe while trading never your private key of ether with any website of google forms , if any asks sure they will stole your coins from wallet.
never fall into trap who says this coin will be pumped or dumped ,they just make money by publicity noting else believe me

. and one thing this is alt-coin discussion section you cannot talk about bitcoins here move your post to bitcoin section or scam one

Asides escrow services on bounty on this forum and ICO I dont know of any escrow service that can offer this kind of service outside here. Can you some please recommend?

One of the biggest  problems in crypto is security. In the crypto world there is no police and controlling bodies. Cyber crooks are not punished, so the number of them grows.
The protection of their means is a personal matter.
Do not neglect computer security!

If you want protection then put your money into a bank.  ;D
I know it's funny but the point that the market is decentralized it means that nobody is governing it and it's more prone to scams and thefts and there is no one to protect you from it nor to punish the perpetrators. Sad but true.

I do not think that it was made by someone close to you, most likely you have been hacked and you have on the computer would have installed some malicious software. In any case, I believe that you should protect yourself as much as possible, otherwise you risk losing everything.

Criminals are punished what it happens is that the nature of bitcoin and the rest of the cryptocurrencies make it very difficult to block them, once they have the money they stole you cannot take it away from them like you can with fiat, this is a great characteristic for those like us who believe in completely owning our money but criminals are abusing this feature of bitcoin.

As a result of decentralisation, the security blockchain was supposed to offer have become a major problem. Truth be told you're more likely to be scammed in crypto than your bank account, at least if you notice any phishy transaction from your bank account you have someone to report to but if it happens in crypto, sadly you are on your own. When I joined bounty early I made a mistake and entered my private key in one of the forms I filled but by the time I noticed it, it was already too late. I watched as someone transferred my tokens from my wallet and I was helpless and couldn't stop or reverse the transactions.

I really still wonder why a lot of investors do not care taking the security of their assets seriously. We must realize that protecting our assets must be more important than earning new things.
I asked a friend of mine who has been able to accrue something tangible in the crypto world few days back if he has finally gotten a hardware wallet and his response was it is too high on the price and my response was if you think a beefed up security is expensive, trying losing your funds to hackers by any means. Security is very paramount and no one should take it with levity at all.

Many people lose the value almost more than 70% but this is due to sudden growth in the last year. If we sell them now we are going to loose the value.

If I have a huge amount of Bitcoin or another Altcoins, I just save it in the only place. That is in cold-storage wallet. Although, it is quite annoying when trading, but it is the best safe way now. Never save much money in Exchanges and online-wallets

Well, the OP didn't lose the money because of the value of bitcoin its just so happen that someone is hacking his personal details about his wallet which is very unfortunate for him. Learn to secure all your assets here in crypto, because everyone wants to have bitcoin and for sure if they see an opportunity like that they will hack you at any way.

I stored my tokens with MEW and i installed metamask for additional safe. Metamask is a google chrome extension and no need to give MEW passwords to internet. Further always bookmark your website and log from there only since there are so many phishing websites. Do  not click suspicious web links and they can track your passwords.

It is true that there are many scams going on in the market but that is false, most scammers and hackers are in fiat, credit card fraud is huge and it is a global problem, the issue is that in fiat you can get your money back or block the account in which the stolen money was received but this is impossible with bitcoin, and we knew from the beginning that we are in our own since one of the most famous slogans of bitcoin is to be our bank so you have no one to call for help.

This is why it is important to protect our computers with a password and if it is possible your wallet should be in an encrypted USB, at least that way you can access your wallet only when you want to send money, also a USB does not look like the first place a person will look for a wealth of information or money since most people keep their most important information in their computers.

Well, sorry for your loss, but that is the kind of loss that came about as a security mistake on your part as it is either you are dumb enough to trust someone with your private keys or you were simply just careless with the security of your funds. However, shit happens and that is one thing I am sure you must have learned your lessons from. Also, remember to always make use of added securities and make use of cold storage if you are really holding for long.

My lesson :  don't trust anyone with your crypto, laptop or password. Because I believe someone close to me did that.
When your dear and near people are not trust worthy, practically you cannot do anything. But, if you are working in some office and you manage your wallets from your work place and probably you have left your things opened which is also possible as per many people's experience. Being careful and having more awareness are always important in crypto world.

It is true that only God knows who does it. If you keep your password in a place where no one else is known, the person who logs into your wallet may only be the one closest to you. If that's wrong then I can just say that your wallet has been invaded by the wallet founder.

Really really sorry to know that. I myself fortunately never lost my coins because of hackers. Hopefully, Never and Never. I think that many hackers right now are very smart to see the small hole and then steal our coins. Just be more and more careful in this situation. I also do agree with you not to trust anyone in crypto.

It's so sad. Many people are having this problem. Most people are being cheated, private key is losing, he's losing all his money like this. You need to be more careful. Because there is no redress for mistakes here. The best way to back up all of your information. I hope more people will not have this problem. I'm sorry for the money you lost.

I made the mistake of sending 5 ETH to a random scammer, thinking I was investing in the Iagon ICO presale.  I accidentally stumbled upon a fake telegram group, and the "admin" personally gave me instructions on how to participate in the presale.  There was a fake medium post, which looked real -- I should have been more careful.  Live and learn.

yes it is. dont trust anybody with your accounts and private key, also always make sure when filling up forms on airdrops and bounty campaign that you entered wallet address not your private key. take an extra caution's visiting some sites that you are not familiar with. just store your private key safely so that we can avoid this problem. lastly use an 2FA authenticator for extra security for your accounts.

But you have to hide your private key better and not tell anyone about it, some people just pretend to be
friends, but at any time they can betray you. so that we need to be careful.

Since you believed that someone close to you, did that, then it means in one way or the other you might have shared your detials with them. In this crypto space you need to be highly secretive and mindful of your data. Sorry about what happened to you, just be security alert henceforth

I have lost Hugh amount of bitcoin, and I believe some person's here too have gone through same. Can we please share our experience and lessons.

There are many who have lost in the initial stages of their trading or some have lost in the ponzi schemes. I am one of those who lost in ponzi schemes literaaly everything i had. But somehow i mamged to pull back and recoveres my losses and earned even profit.

My story is actually more of Ponzi schemes after looking for different ways on how to increase my bitcoin until I ended up losing everything at the end of it all which I believe so many people in their early years may have fallen for a bunch of this. Most times, losing of coin is mostly mistakes on the part of the holders which could be as a result of security carelessness in the case of the OP, or trying to look for things where you cannot find them in the case of Ponzis.

Yes, for now, of course, we have to be careful and secure our wallets from all, good close friends. Always pay attention to basic security conditions and with our assets, everything will be fine.

I lost my money for not legit site because I wanted to invest without knowing that it was just a scam site. I sent money to them and regret after that because I lost my coin with my eye open. Sometimes, I lost after I joined some airdrops.  I lost every coin that has value from my wallet. Now I am being careful from what I am doing. It is hard to lose something that worth of all your effort.

Such a sad experienced you have...Yeah if you have good amount of bitcoin, you should not trust or disclose your private keys and never tell them that you own enough bitcoin. Better to keep it secret and provide back-ups if ever you will lost your copy.

Well, how exactly did you lose your coin OP? I really wanted to know that when I saw the title? Was it a hack? Lost private key? Force?

Just so you know it was hacked and he suspects someone close to him did this to him. So obviously, one of his close people know cryptos as he know this like he knew what was all of these and how the hell he trust people so easily. So this should be a lesson for all of us as this is still money matters and the temptation is just around the corner.

the main reason in the present time to hack of the wallet and another id because of the trust at third party websites which should not be trust by us at any condition because at the third party platform anyone can easily verify change password and other details easily by the user email access .
Here once I was also cheated by coinbase wallet , my coinbase wallet was connected with email and BTC se account with the jam email address .
The hacker access my btcjam account and then he transfer the amount of BTC from coinbase wallet by simply approve the loan through BTC jam account .
So here we can say that we should remain away from third party platforms and website due to security and safety for our assets .
And also once I was cheated by a person at Facebook who are selling his BTC at very low price but in actually he was scammer , he first asked me to send money but after that he did not pay any amount of BTC.
So  we should keep in your mind that we should not take trust anyone person without any escrow platform or person between the buyer and seller .

I'm really sorry about that your lost. In this crypto world, we have to pay more attention. Our little mistake enough to lost what we collected. Maybe your close one. maybe some hackers. Once I saw a post made by someone says his account also got hacked. his mistake was he stores his account detail on google drive for the easy access. But it caused to lost his funds. Store account details on Google drives and PCs very risky. the best way is the write-down them in a book and keeps it in a safe place or store details in DVD.

It's your mistake, this technology that has a huge risk it needs a lot of wallet because there are several hackers that can operate the site ,they are highly good in performing hack because they are one who do for that.
