Post by: rajchy on July 02, 2018, 08:08:35 AM
I do not have much idea about cryptocurrency, I am absolutely new in this crypto world, I want to know about  'What is the difference between a Altcoin and a Token?'

Title: Difference between token and coin

An Altcoin is a coin other than Bitcoin.

The real question is what is the difference between a token and a coin.

I think the answer is a bit subjective, but this is my understanding. A token is a unit of exchange associated with a blockchain project. It can have many other functions associated with it other than a simple exchange. A coin is a token with limited functionality, generally limited to a simple payment unit.

As @erominer stated, tokens could also be considered altcoins. What you may be asking is the difference of a cryptocurrency coin from a token.

Tokens typically run on an actual coin's blockchain and are intended for very specific uses, decided by their issuer. Think about the old days when you had to buy tokens to play at an arcade. You can only really use them in that arcade even if they technically have value. That's basically how cryptocurrency tokens work.

Coins, on the other hand, have a blockchain of their own, and generally act as actual currencies that can be used to buy goods/services anywhere.

Edit: Jet Cash beat me to it, but that's my explanation anyway.

I totally agree with your explanation. Moreover, there are 3 types of token:
1. Security token: it's also called digital token which represents a product or physical asset
2. Utility token: it supports token holders to access services which are provided by the issuer
3. Equity token: it's also called tokenized securities and it's similar to stock in Joint-Stock Company

Token is understood as parasite/sponger in a certain blockchain of the coin because it doesn't have it own blockchain, for example: EOS, CS, BITX, HAV etc...is Ethereum based; TKY, QLC, DBC etc... is NEO based and so on

What I understand is that altcoins have their own wallet and tokens don’t have. There a lot of Erc20 token and you can use myether to transfer the token. The coins usually have their own blockchain and you can use blockchain explorer check them. Token function is very sample and you can use web exchange to store them.

Altcoins
Altcoins means alternative coins to bitcoin. They have own blockchain.

Tokens
Tokens are like the digital assets and they are based with another blockchain. Most tokens are create for the ICO projects.

Altcoins have their own chain (Litecoin, Dogecoin)
Tokens are hosted on another chain like the Ethereum or EOS Chain (BRD Token, TenX Token)

Your question has been answered, but I'd just like to add:

If you have a question(like the question in this topic), make it a habit of doing a quick Google search first, before asking. Go ask here or on other forums just if you couldn't find an answer to your question. This question of yours can easily be answered by a single Google search:

Token is an altcoin. Altcoins are cryptocurrencies that are different from bitcoin. Therefore, tokens and coins are altcoins.

Token is already an altcoin.
But an altcoin could be a token or not.
If not, it has his own blockchain.

As far as I know, the altcoin has its own blockchain network and the token does not have and is linked to a network such as Waves (WAVES) or Ethereum (ETH), etc.
