Title: Jalapeno 5 GH/s
Post by: Nyrb on February 13, 2014, 02:49:31 AM
Im just getting into BitCoin mining and was wondering if it would be worth getting the Jalapeno 5 GH/s mining hardware? I would also be getting a solar power setup making the cost of mining minuscule-nothing.  How long would it take for Jalapeno to make itself up or is there any better equipment for a reasonable price?  All the information I can find is from 6-12 months ago when people were guesstimating difficulty rises, but when it comes to present day I have no idea what I should or shouldnt buy.  ANY info at all would be a GREAT help! Thanks!

Unless you can find one for like $100 or less, I'd have to say you should look at something else.

Anything you suggest?  Everything does seem to be a little pricey.

Three Antminer U1's will easily outrun a 5GH/s Jalapeno, and use less power doing so. Even at Ebay prices it will be in the range of $150 for the 3 USB sticks. I don't suggest that this is a money making proposition, just that the Antminer U1's are a superior approach.

Are you getting  the solar power setup for free? Can't see that being cheap.

You can make an estimate of your profit over here (http://btcinvest.net/en/bitcoin-mining-profit-calculator.php). In general 5ghs jalapenos are not profitable anymore. They are mostly nice to get started with SHA asics, and experiment a little, before diving into more expensive asics.

Yes, japaleno is not worth it anymore.

If it's just for fun get whatever is cheaper just so you can hear the buzzing and fan noise lol.  Antminer is probably a better bang/buck than a jalapeno currently.

From investment point of view it would be better to buy BTC directly.

Solar is not cheep by any means unless you are getting it free. It will increase your capital investment giving you more you have to pay off before you break even. I have a very high end solar system on my sailboat and it works well but not for running heaters 24 hours 365 days a year. Do a lot of research on solar and its pricing and required components and output. Solar is not the magic solution a lot of people make it out to be.
