Title: Is It Worth It? (Pool + My Rig)
Post by: fcp4life on July 10, 2018, 09:45:17 PM
I have an older gaming rig I built a few years ago, I was going to upgrade to play VR. However, through research, it would be better to start over from scratch so... I discovered NiceHash, However, it is difficult to find just how much I can make so asking for some help to see if it is even worth it...
My Rig
- Intel i7 - 3770 (non K)  -   @ 3.40GHz
- MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GDDR5 128-bit OC
- 850w PSU
- 16GB  -  G.Skill Ripjaws 240-Pin SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

You either listed your video card wrong or have no clue what the actual specs are.

Without that information nobody can answer your question.

the 1080Ti came with 11gb of GDDR5X memory, I dont think any of the 10 series Nvidia cards ever came with 4gb of RAM.

Apologies typo there... it is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

Go to https://whattomine.com/

Put 1 under 1050Ti and look at the results

Most profitable coin is ETH and you will make around $0.44 USD per day before any power costs. Power shouldn't be too high since it uses very little electricity.

So if you already got the GPU, mine away, but if you want more speed, you need at least an 1070 or 1080 or so. If you like AMD, then get the RX 470/570 which should get you 30MH/s.

I have heard that you can run both GPU and CPU? as for cost... well I do live at home.

I like the 1050ti as a mining card - quiet, easy to overclock, max 75W power and doesn't get above about 52 degrees at 50% fan.

The problem is that with only one you'll be waiting weeks/months to meet minimum payout if you are on Nicehash or a pool with autoexchange to BTC. If you are getting paid in the coin which you are mining then it makes a bit more sense but still a lot of time investment choosing coins and exchanging them yourself for the payout you will be getting.

A good card and still profitable - fill a 12 card rig with them and then they make sense.

Rx 480/580 are best for mining, not those you mentioned.
OP you have great PC, even simple processor and 1gb ram is enough for mining rig, nothing to talk about i7 and 16gb ram. Since you have PC with those components and want to mine, it really worths to upgrade your GPU, 1050ti has low hashrate, it can't even profit well when mine in bulk.
If you want to mine on nicehash, you can try nicehash profit calculator, it's very easy.

They do have relatively low hashrates but also low purchase costs. We can get between $13-$15 / day (before electricity) from a 12 card 1050ti rig. Depends on your definition of 'profit well' but I would say that's quite respectable for the cost of the parts.

Please elaborate how this can be done...

Purely dependent on coin choice - nothing exceptional on the rig setup/clock etc.

I have heard that you can run both GPU and CPU? as for cost... well I do live at home.

Be careful running at home.  Running both the CPU and GPU 24/7 will increase your parent's power bill.  I had a very uncomfortable discussion why our power bill jumped and extra $300.
