Title: Why does everyone seem to be so caught up in post counts, position, merits etc.
Post by: Scoobers on July 19, 2018, 10:36:11 PM
I have found this forum a great source of information but there are loads of unnecessary, unhelpful posts which are seem to be there purely because people are trying to increase their post counts and position.
What benefits does having a high post count or higher position bring? Surely, if people were not rewarded for having high post counts, they would stop posting unnecessary drivel.

Money.

A higher post count and merit means, for quite a lot of users with bad campaign managers, you get more money.

There are some campaign managers that are great at managing their campaigns and keeping their participants from spamming, there are similarly other managers who literally just collect a large number of users of a certain rank and just pay them based on how many posts they've made.

It depends on whether the manager/company thinks "we want a few great quality posts so it looks like our company is high quality as we can afford to accept only the best posters into our campaign" or "we want many bad posts because at least our signature will be viewed".

Basically post count is one of the requirement for a forum account to ranked up. But with the addition of merits, it's now post count + activity + merits.

The main purpose of majority why they are doing such lots of post are; a) chance to be merited b) to ranked up c) post count requirements in a bounty.

Just report those users that you think doing spam or kindly ignored those users so you won't encounter their posts.

So basically it's paid advertising and the more posts a user has the more money they can earn from it.
It explains why there are so many low value posts but it's a shame as it reflects badly on the forum. I'm sure the mods do what they can to stamp it out but they are outnumbered by the users so probably fighting a losing battle.

There are many bounty campaigns are paying bitcoin or altcoin and higher the account rank the higher rates you can get that is why they keep asking about the post counts and position and about the merit because this is the requirements to rank your account to high-rank position so if you are a spammer and not contributing here in the forum you will never rank up.

The forum this year is preventing other users to make multi accounts(mostly use to sell the account to others) and spam on the forum they need to clean up the forum and deleted unhelpful post.

Make sure to press "Report To Moderator" if you find spam post. This will make the work of Moderators somewhat easier.

Money and maybe reputation, being a legendary is very difficult now but you can make lots of money from bounties they give very high stakes.

That's one of the reasons the merit system was introduced earlier this year.
This will get better when the number of ICOs is less which will be the case in the coming months as the aftermath of the bear market from end 2017 will be over.

There are also some places where you can have decent conversations and where the spam is significantly less.
A rule of thumb here is: the more complex the topic, the less likely it is a spammer will engage in the discussion.

Because many bounty tasks and airdrops have requirements for the number of posts, these are the process of completing the bounty mission!

It's all about the money... Now there are so many people on Bitcointalk who came here just to make money from bounties and airdrops. Usually bounties have zero requirements for posts quality, so people aren't even trying to post something useful and interesting. They just posting primitive answers just to reach required number of posts to get paid.
High rank means that you can earn more. But after Merit system was introduced mostly spammers stuck at Jr. Member rank with 0 Merits and they will never reach higher rank. But they create many alt accounts to join bounties with all of them and increase their earnings.

It's not just paid advertising, that's quite a bit of it.

There are other users also who try to rank up to get 'loans' under their account and sell their account (if you have 100 spam accounts and get them all to sr member and then sell them all for 0.02BTC then you're in profit somewhere). Sometimes accoutns are sold outright also.

The low value posts you find, report them, the mods will get to stuff eventually. Thare's a lot of work to do though for the few mods that are left still with their responsibilities of moderation here.

higher rank yields higher payment rate in signature campaign
higher rank requires certain number of post and certain period for activity time
and recently certain number of merit is also needed to rank up

the problem is some campaign managers only see these ranks and numbers without checking post history
hence there's a chance for spammers to join the campaign, and they do whatever they can to rank up higher
