Title: What is a good way to concisely explain Bitcoin?
Post by: kaushiks093 on July 26, 2018, 10:58:06 AM
Often I'm asked to explain BTC to someone and occasionally I come up with something stellar that really nails it, but most times it's a rambling incoherent mess.

What I would like to see is a short and simple explanation of what BTC is that is suitable for someone non-technical to understand.

There's so many ways to say it but you're right, it's often rambling because people focus on the tech, people focus on blockchain, but really, those are the things going on behind the scenes of Bitcoin. You should look at the whitepaper summary for an idea of why Bitcoin was so special but the simplest and biggest way Bitcoin is different to me is:

With Bitcoin, only you control and own your own money, not anybody else. Imagine paying something or sending someone money, and knowing that only the exact amount of money you decide to spend goes exactly to the person you wanted to pay. No one else outside can ever control it, or take it from you, or return it to you. And the receiver will always get your money, in the exact amount you send. This concept is still new today as it was 10 years ago.

People might ask, how is this different from me giving someone $1 or sending paypal money? Then you go into the details, of how banks or other parties are the ones who take your instruction to pay someone and settle the payment elsewhere.

You should explain bitcoin as it is. The simpler the better because not all people can understand such complicated things. Tell them that it is a currency running digitally and there is no entity that is controlling it. By the time that they ask questions, it means they are interested and that is the time you should be answering them one by one.

Simply you can say that Bitcoin is a virtual or digital currency which is not owned by any government or country. It is totally decentralised and only the person who bought it, controls it, no one else.

Bitcoin is a digital currency based on decentralized platform. The technology on which this platform is based is blockchain. Basically Btc removes the need of third party for purpose of transactions. The transactions done through BTC are anonymous and secure and does not reveal any information about sender or receiver. Transactions done via BTC are free from third party interference such as banks, money transfer, financial institutions, etc.

Bitcoin is the next evolution in a currency.  ;D

We were riding on horses and then the first automobile was manufactured and this is the equivalent to us using paper money

and now taking that paper money and replacing it with a much better, digital upgrade. Bitcoin is Cash version 2.  ;D

The only difference is that Bitcoin is not being issued and controlled by a government.  ;D

There are so much you can say about bitcoin but giving you all details will sure put your brain not taking it all, I really think it is good to just say what you really know, And don't claim anything that you truly not know, It is alright in the first day because you are teaching a newbie that are not really familiar with the technology of bitcoin, So I really think the right think to push forward towards it is to put the basic first, The wallet he can use, How he can earn bitcoin, And I think experience will really take over and he will know about it from time to time and by just guiding him through his way.

Bitcoin is a virtual currency that is not backed by any country's government regulations. It can be accepted if both parties are willing to accept and pay in means of Bitcoins. It deals with inflation, and monetary value, but is a digital coin and stored in a digital wallet itself, for the ease of its users, with special pins to access and use it.

bitcoin is a digital currency. No bills to print or coins to mint. It's decentralized -- there's no government, institution (like a bank) or other authority that controls it. Owners are anonymous; instead of using names, tax IDs, or social security numbers, bitcoin connects buyers and sellers through encryption keys. And it isn't issued from the top down like traditional currency; rather, bitcoin is "mined" by powerful computers connected to the internet.

Your comments are absolutely correct. I also think Bitcoin's price fluctuations are a good thing. If Bitcoin prices are stable like other currencies, then Bitcoin can not become a global player. That's why I chose to invest in Bitcoin

Bitcoin is a virtual currency that is not backed by any country's central bank or government. It can be traded for goods or services with vendors who accept Bitcoins as payment. Bitcoins are stored in a digital wallet, which also holds each address the user sends and receives Bitcoins from, as well as a private key known only to the user. The network is designed to generate approximately 21 million Bitcoins and the network is set up in a way to deal with inflation

The best short explanation is that it's electronic money of the Internet. Money independent of banks and governments not controlled by anyone. Some people are comparing it to virtual gold because it doesn't depend on banks and local economies and its amount is limited.

Yeah when people are coming from a non-technical side they will most likely get confused if anything to do with [Suspicious link removed]es up. So it's probably best not to mention that unless they ask how it is secured, you can say "There's a unique algorithm type coding that's called blockchain. It requires multiple validations and is hard to crack" or something like that.

But I would focus on the more social aspects of bitcoin. Like the fact that you have complete control over it, and the banks cannot influence it. It's value is determined by the people who invest in it only.

Maybe about the virtual nature of it too, but this could certainly be confusing for some.

much easier for an individual that has a basic technical knowledge, Explain base  on the old  policy of trade by batter, meaning, you exchange you fiat for another form of currency that is digital, which you cannot see unlike fiat, but can be confirm from your wallet, also Bitcoin is also a basic answer to the cashless policy advocated globally.

That reminds me of the first time I heard of bitcoin. I really hear the last word "coin". That was on campus when a friend of mine visited me. We were both broke and had no cash on us. But we were eager to enter into business to earn some money. After I had cooked for him to eat, he said his brother was into a mining business and they deal in bitcoin and really earning big.  I thought bitcoin was a newly discovered mineral for the mineral mining sector. Then a day after I heard the price of bitcoin on the business new. Oh, how can I be so naive. Bitcoin was no mineral. Probably i got confused because of the mining I heard. The only simple way I understood Bitcoin is that it is just a digital currency that can be mined, traded for fiat, and for payments of online services. It is not controlled by anybody.

What is Bitcoin? (https://coinswitch.co/info/bitcoin/what-is-bitcoin)

To many, Bitcoin is the face of the cryptocurrency market, and for quite a few, it remains the only cryptocurrency they know.

Bitcoin: The Basics

The first to come into the spotlight, Bitcoin is a decentralized, blockchain based cryptocurrency.

It can be transferred from person to person, without the use of a financial institution, such as a bank. This is called a peer-to-peer transaction and eliminates the need for a middle-man.

All transactions are recorded and stored in a ‘ledger’, which is the blockchain. These are not stored in a single server but are distributed across the network, thus making them decentralized, and safe from unauthorized modifications.

In January 2009, an individual or a group of individuals using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto released the source code on SourceForge.
In 2010, Nakamoto handed over the Bitcoin network to Gavin Andresen, who then sought to decentralize it.

Bitcoin is completely decentralized and just the individual who got it, controls it and nobody else. It is the world's first digital money. It is an exceptionally beneficial venture for its clients since they can profit effectively and rapidly in exactly how long for bitcoin can restore your cash and benefit for you or basically you can state that bitcoin is a virtual or digital currency which isn't controlled by any government or nation.

First, you agree with me that:
The process of learning Bitcoin is really difficult for beginners. Right?
I also experienced that stage so I understand that feeling. Submerge in a dozen new information.
But I realize that there are not many people who write about Bitcoin in an understandable way. I will explain to you like this:
Bitcoin or BTC is the first electronic currency in the world and lays the foundation for the development of the cryptocurrency market.
Bitcoin cannot be created but you can only claim - otherwise known as Bitcoin.
Unlike paper money. Bitcoin cannot be faked.
Extremely low transaction fees.
The security of Bitcoin is high security.
Where is the real value of Bitcoin? The most plausible answer to this question is the technology behind Bitcoin - Blockchain.

What I would like to see is a short and simple explanation of what BTC is that is suitable for someone non-technical to understand.

Bitcoin is a digital currency. You can have transaction without history. All of your information is hidden. It dont have taxes unlike other banks. You can earn on this too by joining some campaigns.

Bitcoin is not a virtual currency but a real money or another means of "cryptocurrency". Many people who are new to information or do not have enough information or call bitcoin is a virtual currency, this way is easy to mislead people who do not know about bitcoin.

Bitcoin was invented as a peer-to-peer system for online payments that do not require a trusted central authority. Bitcoin is the first digital currency that is completely distributed. But I think many people know it as the technology behind Bitcoin, but blockchain potential uses extend far beyond digital currencies. However, often I'm asked to explain bitcoin to someone and occasionally I come up with something stellar that really nails it, but most time it's rambling incoherent.

I know your pain, i have exactly the same. Its hard to tell someone what bitcoin is, because you have no idea where to start. If you will be too much vague it will make no sense at all to person listening to you.
Its revolutionary technology without central authority as store of value/currency. Not even sure which one :P

I found the following: "Bitcoin is digital money that is tamperproof and openly traded." Short and precise in my opinion.

For more information about it, I highly recommend the following article (It's actually exactly about how to explain Bitcoin in short ;) )
