Wrong. MTGOX has been one company that has brought so much bad press to Bitcoin as a whole.

They are a failure of a Bitcoin exchange. The free market has proven that they dont believe BTC will be a good way to get funds out of MTGOX.

scam, scammer. Obviously, mtgox itself is stealing btc and $ from its users. if you are one participant, you'd better keep your account silent without any trade. if you can join it now, just go to buy bitcoin and keep them.

bitcoins are faster to withdraw so people should be holding bitcoins, logically.

Wow, we are about to see under $200 on Gox...

if the people who sold don't buy back below their sell, they will lose a lot of money when price hits $500+ shortly. just another "greater fool" market tactic of not being the last to sell at the bottom

Wow, Gox is still going bonkers...I just saw it bounce up to $250, and then back down to $200 within a matter of about 2 seconds.   It also seems to be slowly dragging down prices straight across the board on other exchanges.  Even LTC is hitting lows right now too...

Not sure I understand this fully.

Is it impossible to withdraw Bitcoins from MtGox to another exchange?

It seems weird that the price is dumping.

The basic gist is that most investors believe Gox is going to go bankrupt and it's better to have a claim against them in fiat than in btc -- so people are dumping all they can, and at this point, at whatever price they can get.

And that's correct -- can't withdraw in either fiat or BTC, thus further driving the panic.

fiat does not flow out of gox, and if there ever is a bankruptcy you'll get pennies on the dollar of whatever cash you do hold there.

so.........

bankruptcy doesn't mean there are actual funds there to "distribute" out. so whoever actually thinks that is just extermely confused about what bankruptcy is

I see...

But the reasoning behind this must be that there actually exists fiat at MtGox, either already in ppl accounts or somehow deposited.

They are as many buyers as sellers, so it seems a bit strange that one part wants to have fiat, while another want Bitcoins, if investors are going to claim against them?

Totally right, but the general legal advice getting handed out is that if things go to court, it's probably going to be easier to get your pennies back than your bitcoins.

advice: "take a guranteed big loss on your position" so if mtgox goes bankrupt you have a 1% chance at recovering 1% of your funds. worst fucking advice. then again that's how lawyers make their money.

Title: Re: MtGox website down. Watch them disappear!
Post by: minerdetail on February 20, 2014, 08:51:43 AM
Where is the money then?

Who owns them?

The logic behind buy and sell, is that before a price can increase/ decrease there need to be some money / btc in the system. If the ppl have money at their accounts they are exchanging those to Bitcoins and vice versa.

If no money can enter or leave the system, then it makes absolutely no sense that the price is dropping, except that the clever ones must be very happy to receive cheap Bitcoins. Theoretically the price could increase 10-fold, due to the fact that the system is isolated.

Common sense must denote that it is extremely stupid to exchange anything at an exchange that is heading for bankruptcy.

Why do most people think that the money is coming from MtGox, when they actually should/ are coming from the customers that use MtGox.

The only way I can see that MtGox is not able to payout fiat, is that the fiat is lost/ stolen from the accounts (and has been for a very long time) and that the fiat-amount one could see in their account balance was fake. (i.e. the money behind it was gone/ deported to the MtGox-scammers)

Just my 2 cents :)

Yes, that's definitely good news. I am glad to see that people, even new-comers, aren't as reliable on Mt. Gox for their price, and certainly don't use them to buy Bitcoins, for the most part. CoinBase and Bitstamp seem to be the two main branches, which is awesome, as they both have very good support, however, I can see a large load mounting on both of them, one for UK and one for US, and a similar situation happening, whereby they become over-encumbered by the large load.

Gox is destroying bitcoin

If a tiny company like MT Gox can single handedly "destroy bitcoin" then it wasn't worth very much in the first place.

I doubt that's true anyway. It's just the gossip story of the moment and since the market is tiny and doesn't have anything else to concern itself with, that's what it's decided to obsess on for now.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tokyo, Japan, February 20th, 2014

Dear MtGox Customers,

Thank you for your patience this week while we are working on re-initiating bitcoin
withdrawals. In addition to the technical issue, this week we have experienced some
security problems, and as a result we had to relocate MtGox to our previous office building
in Shibuya (details can be found here https://support.mtgox.com/home). The move,
combined with some other security and technical challenges, pushed back our progress.
As much as we didn’t want to only provide an “update on an update”, this is the current
status. We are committed to solving this issue and will provide more information as soon
as possible to keep everyone in the loop.
We are very sorry for the delays and deeply appreciate your kind understanding and
continuous support.

Best regards,

MtGox Team

This is fucking unbelievable...  >:(

This has got to be a result of employees fearing their safety.   It sucks for just the average employee that is just there doing their job, as there is nothing that they can do to fix the situation...

riots in the streets are keeping MagicTheGatherinOnlineeXchange from work...

What's the fastest way to deposit fiat on Gox now?

How fast is OK-Pay?

(Yes, I'm aware of the risks.)

scam, scammer. Obviously, mtgox itself is stealing btc and $ from its users. if you are one participant, you'd better keep your account silent without any trade. if you can join it now, just go to buy bitcoin and keep them.

There is a reason why the price is so low. The bitcoins currently available for trade may not even be real.

It is possible that the price has been manipulated in order to attract new money to the exchange. I hope you really are aware of the risks.

I would put it at a 65% chance that you would never again see money deposited today on Gox.   My fear is that the implosion of Gox is going to encourage governments to come out even harder with the ban hammer after there are so many people who have been screwed out of their money...
