Some people put their entire savings into bitcoins hoping it will be worth a shot. Just like gold, no one knew the price would go up as high as today and people that bought their gold back in the 80s will be making good amount of money in the present day by either selling them or keeping them to see if the price goes higher or not.

The long term potential of bitcoin value is not certain by any means. Supply & Demand, as it is now there will be more supply than demand = lower bitcoin values.
