Title: [2018-08-02] Thailand's largest movie theatre chain set to accept cryptocoins
Post by: bbc.reporter on August 02, 2018, 02:01:46 AM
This is good news but would the holders really waste their cryptocoins to buy some movie tickets and popcorn? Did RapidzPay really think people will start using their bitcoins to buy useless things because they made an app?

Major Cineplex Group has partnered up with the mobile app RapidzPay in a move to allow its users the ability to use cryptocurrencies to pay for various services at the movie theatre’s numerous locations.

RapidzPay is an application which delivers personal and corporate payment solutions through a decentralized blockchain-based platform. In order for merchants to collect cryptocurrency payments, they have to integrate the RapidzPOS. Individuals can then use the mobile app to buy any services they need, paying with their digital currencies.

Speaking on the matter, Chanya Tamrongweenichai, Director of Marketing at Major Cineplex Group noted:

With RapidzPOS and the RapidzPay mobile app, you’ll be able to buy any services and products from us, such as movie tickets, popcorn and other different products with cryptocurrency. […] Also, we believe that RapidzPay will expand to our other businesses and lead the change for Thailand’s financial ecosystem to be cashless.

A good move on their behalf, if you look at what Bitcoin has done for MovieTickets.com :

https://99bitcoins.com/accepting-bitcoin-is-a-boon-for-movietickets-com/ and I quote, " MovieTickets.com is reporting that its embrace of bitcoin is leading to increased sales, visibility, and community good will.

When the company first decided to accept bitcoin there were some trepidations, but the all-digital currency is turning out to be a boon for the online ticket selling site. With consumers constantly demanding more ways to quickly and easily pay for goods online, bitcoin is emerging as an increasingly popular transaction method, and one that is helping MovieTickets.com sell its goods. "

I hope these guys stick to Bitcoin and not some obscure Alt coin, because that will not increase sales, because a new coin does not have the user base that Bitcoin already has.

This movie theater looks pretty nice. I guess that people first need to send their BTC, ETH or other coins to the deposit of RapidzPay System and then they'll be able to make an instant payments via the mobile application in this movie theater. It is a good news for crypto currencies.

Thanks for sharing, OP, but you asked the question why holders would want to waste their Bitcoin to buy movie tickets and popcorn and I'm finding this a little surprising. Don't you use Bitcoin for everyday things? I'm using it already so regularly that my spending on crypto is already really catching up with my fiat spending.

I order food delivery at least once a week now. That's 100% in Bitcoin. When possible, online shopping I try for Bitcoin options. They actually end up being the same cost or sometimes cheaper. Amazon with Purse gives you at least 5%, for example. If I could pay for movies and popcorn with Bitcoin, I sure as hell would!

And why not? We all already know we have expenditures. We're spending it anyway. I earn in crypto, and I still need to convert it to fiat for expenditures. I wish I didn't need to.

Am I wasting my money? That's what Bitcoin is, isn't it? Money?

You are not looking at the big picture. Some people, even if they represent an insignificant portion of Bitcoin hodlers, might decide to purchase movie tickets and popcorn just for the thrill of using bitcoin to make payments. Not every one is hung on hodling bitcoin till it hits ATH and selling for profit.

Exactly. The last time I ever went to a move theatre is like 20 years ago. I would definitely go there right now if my local movie theatre accepted Bitcoin. I have no idea what movies are playing right now since I don't watch any movies, but I'll definitely dig into it just because of Bitcoin. The barbershop I visit once a month *unofficially* accepts Bitcoin as payment, and I always tip the barber 100% of the amount, so instead of $20 he'll get $40. He always tells me that I don't have to do that, which I counter with that I am happy he's open minded enough to accept it.

I'm hung on hodling for ever. I don't see a point in cashing Bitcoin out to fiat and never will do, because Bitcoin itself is money already.

Yes, you are wasting your bitcoins because you are losing some value today by spending them on useless things. It would be better to save them and spend little of them for as much as possible.

Bitcoin is not like any fiat money that is devalued by inflation.
