Title: What is the Worst Case Scenario for Bitcoin?
Post by: pakhitheboss on August 03, 2018, 03:44:07 PM
This is a known fact if the price goes up it will surely go down. What happens if the price of Bitcoin falls to $1000 in 2018, will this be considered as a Worst Case Scenario or something else?

A sort of worst case scenario(or at least a bad scenario) for bitcoin would be something like a 51% attack. Bitcoin doesn't care about price. People will be able to use bitcoin as long as we have miners even if one whole bitcoin goes down to $1 in price.

Though a low price would be really really bad PR-wise.

If we consider the price, the worst case is that price decreases to zero. But I don't care only about the price. In my opinion the worst case is becoming centralized and controlled by the governments.
( I don't think it's easy for the governments, But it's the worst case.)

At 1000$, miner rewards will go up because a lot if people will shut down their machines when the profits drop off, hopefully bringing down network difficulty.

A lot if people will begin to fill bags driving price up again for a while.

The network itself will just see transactions containing full btc, not tenths or hundredths.  The community itself will shrink.

I don't see this as likely but there will be fluctuations in pricing for the entire existence if BTC and the network and community will adapt.

If bitcoin drops $ 1000, many people feel disappointed and get out of bitcoin because they will think bitcoin is dead, so they will sell in panic.

This is probably the worst scenario. Because of the large percentage of its price will be dropped. Thus, it can be recorded in the history of bitcoin and this might cause to lose interest other investors to invest more in bitcoin again because clearly it is controlled by the whales called crypto currency market. And of course it does not happen because it will have a huge impact on the market.

The price of a Bitcoin has little to do with how we use its underlying technology called blockchain. https://charts.bitcoin.com/ - We can see from these charts that the price of bitcoin has been very volatile. Even if the price of bitcoin goes to zero, the technology that powers it won't be affected. The worst case scenario for it would be if someone found a way to control 51% of its blockchain as that would result in them controlling all the aspects of the blockchain and make any changes that they wished to the incorruptible ledgers.

If this happen many people being hospitalized because of frustration of their loose in their investment and they will sell immediately their holdings this what we called the panic seller the weak hands that can't hold their coin no matter what happen in their holdings and it will be the worst scenario in the history.

Yes, $1k would cause blood on the streets but I wouldn't panic if Bitcoin reaches that price level, as Bitcoin is volatile by nature and it is expected that Bitcoin will bottom at $3k price range, so I wouldn't call $1k too faraway from it. Actually I'm looking forward to it as it would give me the opportunity to buy Bitcoin at such a low price.

Its not going to be the worse scenario for most of the big investors. They might buy all of what is being on sale on the exchanges. $100K will give them 100,000 BTC. Its the best scenario for them. Sure you wouldn't like it but they will celebrate for it. Will even toss a party the whole week thanking the community for being  generous.

for bitcoin to reach the price of 1000 $ requires a fairly strong weld, if indeed there will be such a scenario the role of large capital holders is needed, because to drop bitcoin up to 1000 $ it might take a large dump maybe around 30% bitcoin of the total supply released on the market together, the second scenario might occur if there were big blows from some countries that did a rejection and bad punch , the third, the worst if everyone thinks bitcoin is useless then it's all over

It can become a worst case if that $1000 drop really happen, And because most in the  community is very well known about the price of bitcoin they will not surely become something like this, But instead it will keep on moving forward, Because when the price reach the point of $1000 USD there will be many people will be pissed and would sure stop on supporting bitcoin, But in reality this kind of value right now is only be possible when bitcoin really is dying.

Agree with your comments. I also think that if the price of Bitcoin drops, investors will switch to altcoin investments, but it is impossible to reduce Bitcoin prices to $ 1000. Bitcoin operators will never let this happen

the worst case would be some political decisions which control bitcoin somehow , and as a result loss of faith by investors and a huge drop in the price followed by some more bad news and a FOMO which can bring us to ZERO !
i don't think that can ever happen even if governments try to  :P

why are you afraid that 2018 is the worst scenario? have you not read the history of the bitcoin movement in 2013 to 2014? I just want to say, that bitcoin is still positive. this year is a witness that bitcoin is still alive when many countries try to ban bitcoin through central bank regulations and hacking cases that occur in exchange. It is relative. Someone who bought at a much higher price would be mentally traumatized however, for someone new to this space, buying in at this price is the best case scenario for them. Personally, after being in this space for a short amount of time, I would be delighted if bitcoin could revisit those price levels, that is below 1000$ or less.

if this statement were true then price of nothing could have ever gone up. in which case we never had any inflation! talking of assets then price of none of them (like gold, stocks,...) should have ever stayed up.

you are misquoting this!
- when price goes up it usually needs a correction. a correction is a much smaller drop compared to the rise.
- when price goes up fake (like an altcoin pump) then it must come back down which is the case in altcoin market these days.

The thing is that there are so many HODLers now that if it dropped dramatically, we'd all swoop and increase the demand again.
Government regulation is probably the only worst case scenario I'm worried about long term. And I hope that's not an issue under a republican administration, they're usually a bit more restrained in expanding government regulation to new territories.

The worst case scenario for BTC already happened in my opinion, having the whole world attention when reached ATH 20k then fall back that much was a huge downside for BTC . I know that is not new to BTC but from NOV 2017 to FEB 2018 a lot of people from outside crypto space was watching Bitcoin closely  in a way that never happened before . Anyone that was attacking BTC is now have a proof to backup his claim about BTC ( whatever it was ) . But anyway I think BTC is already recovering from what happened , recovering does not have to mean recovering in price .

Well, the worst case scenario that might happen in the community of the Bitcoin is not just the keep of its downfall in the market price but also if no more people will engage in using this crypto currency. But I do not think that this will happen because Bitcoin all over other crypto currencies is the King of all that affects other crypto currencies too.

Well though it would be disastrous for btc to go that low at this point in time, btc may still recover after that so that's probably not the worst that can happen. A lot of things can actually be a lot worse. Like hackers finding ways somehow to get into wallets and compromising them. Or governments entirely banning all crypto. Unlikely to happen but difinitely would make this market crash.

Probably one of the worst decisions would be to ban cryptocurrency worldwidely, or if people would just lose all the interest for it and the price will be coming to 0. I think both of those options are possible.

Worst case scenario for Bitcoin:

51 percent attack given that Bitmain holds the main mining consortiums.

An improbable scenario, more sci-fi, would be quantum cryptographic cracking of the Bitcoin system. But, would that, for instance, 'kidnap' Satoshi's first million coins, and transfer them indistinguishably to hidden wallets?!

In terms of the importance of continued mining for the vitality of the blockchain, Governments imposing a "Carbon Tax" on "environmentally polluting" mining activity; or totally banning mining like they banned ChloroFluoroCarbons (CFCs) because they caused the Ozone Hole that caused increases in skin cancer across the world. Some such excuse is readily available today, what with rampant climate change, and the like.

Worst case scenario for hodlers of Bitcoin:

Government levies tax on the mere possession of Bitcoin, and uses peak end-2017 20k valuation as the basis for taxation, regardless of when the holding actually took place.

But wait, the worst is yet to come!  How about that tax being a penal three hundred percent?!!

The worst case scenario is when miners lose interest in mining bitcoin and we become vulnerable to  51% attack. Even if the price is high if there is no miners to protect the integrity of the blockchain, our  bitcoins will be useless. Price is just a reflection of how great the blockchain technology is. Even if the price falls but the technology is intact, it can recover.

The worst case scenario for Bitcoin? That's a really tough answer to give, as there are several determining factors that could easily spell the end for any crypto currencies. Here are a few that I can think of off of the top of my head.

1. Regulation: To many regulations can really hinder the blockchains innovation, severely crippling progress for growth, both economically and socially.
2. Tax: The governments can easily kill crypto simply by taxing it to death. No one would bother with using a useless medium as an investment vehicle.
3. Adoption: Bitcoin and other cryptos simply take a back seat, as a new medium that's backed by a central authority, one that the common man will trust. Unless crypto becomes easier to use, people will use something else, following the path of least resistance (mediums with simpler interfaces).

The worst scenario of BTC might be not considering it as the decentralized money system. If BTC is being centralized by any means, people will lose faith and interest which they have for now. Worst case scenario is in progress ever since they forked Bitcoin and called their alt coin Bitcoin cash, that's one of the scenarios

Though, another worst case scenario would be like they start buying and buying to pump the price up and then move their money

Into Bitcoin cash to say that Bitcoin wasn't good enough, now we've decided that Bitcoin cash is better, they have done this already.
Some stupid people believed that BCH is good, they have invested their money but they were fooled by shills. another worst case

Scenario would be for some government to buy every single Bitcoin available for sale on the market just to centralize the market.

They have done this as well. some of the other worst case scenarios is the fact that no one can buy Bitcoin anonymously, they can

Just mine it without giving out their identity.

I don't think it can be consider the worst. I believe the worst case  scenario is the total shut down of bitcoin. I think as long as there are people who support and uses bitcoin, prices may vary and continue to fluctuate. If bitcoin does not atleast develop and advance the system, it may result for its downfall. Some problems might also include bitcoin's might stop spreading and be acknowledge worlwide. I guess things might fall sometimes but it will rise again. Lol

all central markets cannot do much with very strict regulations from the government, if this scenario occurs and people can only trade in non-centralized markets, it will make prices fall very hard.

the fact is that every government starts to be actively involved in policies in the crypto central market in their country, there will be no worst case scenario if the potential for development with the interest of very high traders from around the world continues.

I think it's normal, not included in the worst case scenario. In terms of markets, the ups and downs of values and prices, including in terms of bitcoin itself. It could be that after experiencing a decline, the next day the price soared to 10,000 dollars. that is very possible.

How can you know that there's a risk with someone having 51% of the network control but not know about 51% attack (https://learncryptography.com/cryptocurrency/51-attack)? Read about it by clicking the link. I really wouldn't worry about it that much since it will require a lot of money to do the 51% attack and it will just ruin bitcoin's name. Hence, the price will go down and whatever bitcoin the attacker can accumulate from the attack will not be worth the amount of money that he needed to do the attack. Know that the attack is totally possible, but who will be crazy enough to spend money just to ruin something? The government, perhaps, but it will require tremendous resources which could have been used for other things.

The government using this attack to ruin bitcoin which belongs to the people can be a sign that the government and the people have separated and are in war with each other.

This is a known fact if the price goes up it will surely go down. What happens if the price of Bitcoin falls to $1000 in 2018, will this be considered as a Worst Case Scenario or something else?
Yes that would be the worse scenario to happen for bitcoin and more or less investors that time are already pulling out their investment and then bitcoin will be left as half dead if it will still operate and if it will going to recover again it will not be the same as to what bitcoin nowadays that is so good and has a lot of good things to offer.
That's wrong because a price decrease so major has already happened.
https://i.imgur.com/OlvcW8s.png
Study the chart. Bitcoin went up to $1200 then went down to $600 really quickly, increased, then went down to $400, increased again, then the price went down to $200. Today, the price of $1200 of bitcoin is already a nightmare for all of us. Was it "never be the same"? Even to the people that have bought in $1200, today is still a good price. With the mentality that you have, I'd say that you're not a true bitcoin believer. Price can go low but know that mass adoption has to happen before the price can be stable, before we can actually say that a major price decrease means that bitcoin is dead and that people have already left it. At this point, even with a major price decrease, we will be able to recover because a lot of people hasn't joined the game yet unlike when mass adoption has already happened and most of our money is already in bitcoins.

The worst case scenario is not about the price of Bitcoin anymore, if people start to see it as a currency which is easily hackable and scammable then it should be called the worst case scenario. People losing trust on Bitcoin will eventuall make its price go down which can anywhere in the region of 1$-2000$.

Worst case scenario is when bitcoin will be dead. But i think its not gonna happen. If the price falls to $1000 i think many of the holders will buy more coins and i think many of them will switch to altcoins.
Agree with your comments. I also think that if the price of Bitcoin drops, investors will switch to altcoin investments, but it is impossible to reduce Bitcoin prices to $ 1000. Bitcoin operators will never let this happen

Yes I agree with you also. Its become worst case if that $1000 drop really happen. And mostly the investors is know about the price of bitcoin , But instead it will keep on moving forward, Because when the price reach the point of $1000 USD people will be pissed and would sure stop on supporting bitcoin, But in reality this kind of value right now is only be possible when bitcoin really is dying.

In my opinion, the worst case scenario for bitcoin is that people loose faith in bitcoin and find something better, some new crypto leader.
In such case, most of btc user will loose a lot and will never recover financially.
Realistically, most of us here are because of profit, not idea so if bitcoin lost leadership position in the crypto, we all loose.

If you are talking about worst case scenario regarding the price movement, of course it will be bloody to see the price falls to $1000.  But I'm sure that everyone will be happy to see bitcoin at that price, time to go bag holders again, accumulate bitcoin and hold. It will be history repeating itself again and now we become the new wave of early adopters. So technically, its possible, but I don't think that we can't bounce and see the price increased at a rapid phase once bitcoin plummeted to <$1000, IMHO.

Indeed, what comes up will eventually come down.  It's the impact here that we wanted to stress out.  You see, though therotically, bitcon was to wage ware against current cash systems, it somehow ended up bidding up against the stock market.

Trying to prove its worth and showcasing its' valuable strength.  Yet, through out the lifespan of any economy that we came to see, Bitcoin is of a different blood.  Another means to showcase intelligence.

So i think, though the bearish months have been here, all of us can still look mildly relaxed at the incoming future of altcoins.

For me, worst case scenario for Bitcoin is that rapid downfall of its price. If its rapid downfall will take too long it will be alarming for Bitcoin buyers and sellers. Also it would be worst case scenario if there would be no one to invest on Bitcoin. I mean it will be that bad that they will stop investing just because of its price downfall.

I don't see the price falling that low unless something catastrophic happens, such as a 51 percent attack, a massive hack, a global ban, or something along those lines. Bitcoin is increasingly being embraced by financial institutions, so the likelihood of that price is very low, in my view.

The worst scenario of BTC might be not considering it as the decentralized money system. If BTC is being centralized by any means, people will lose faith and interest which they have for now. BTC is the king of crypto space, losing this crown would be the worst of the worst BTC had ever experienced.
That is totally true, because the idea of decentralized system is part of what bringing in investors into the entire cryptocurrency and people hoping that as a Decentralized system would prevail over centralized

Title: Re: What is the Worst Case Scenario for Bitcoin?

I can't imagine if that happens, if bitcoin falls 100 $ bitcoin holders will panic and will sell it. all altcoins will fall, and many investors will withdraw their capital from the market exchange.

This idea too can only make people lose their capital and portfolio to the whales but won't affect the Bitcoin or the cryptocurrency itself that much because a drop on price is inevitable in a market but cannot crash the entire system

Exactly correct especially that your third point, I think the Bitcoin market is very open to centralization by government forces, except there is a kind of protection for the system against being captivated by the government.

This can be avoided by what institutional investments are needed and bitcoin is done as the main means of payment for goods and services.

This is a known fact if the price goes up it will surely go down. What happens if the price of Bitcoin falls to $1000 in 2018, will this be considered as a Worst Case Scenario or something else?

Since we all know that bitcoin falls to its price nowadays in $6000 dollars each but aside from that we will look at the other side it also increases past years it reachest a million dollar so that we cannot say that its price was falling and falling maybe it has the possibility to increases again but when its turn into $1000 it was the worst price at all it causes brokedown of all but i believed that it wont happen.

I think the worst case scenario for bitcoin is that the price of it drops to zero because there are so many worker here that feel nervous and decided to quit working here because they thought that it will be gone.

The worst scenario is that I think it's like 2000 dollars. But even if I come to these numbers, I think that very soon there will be a rapid increase in prices. I hope we do not see much of those prices.

When Bitcoin prices drop to $ 1,000, many investors will panic and sell Bitcoin, which will lead to lower Bitcoin prices and turbulent markets. But I think that will not happen. I think it's not the worst. Because when the price drops to $ 1000 just investors still trust Bitcoin its price will still increase. The worst thing is that Bitcoin prices will drop to 0, when it will be hard to raise prices again.

Falling of bitcoin price down to $1000 is a worst scenario of bitcoin, and this will affect the investors to withraw their investments or people are no longer invest in bitcoin. But it is more worst if bitcoin will totally ban all over the world.

Bitcoin is facing higher lows and lower highs for the past few days in case of prices, which is indicating a downward climb in the prices. It is for sure that the prices will drop but I don't really think it will drop to $1000. Even if it does, then that's gonna be one bad time for Bitcoin, but I know it will be able to overcome it sooner or later.

The worst case scenario is when people don't value the bitcoin anymore and consider it as just a scam. All the hardwork of the creator and the miners will go to waste. Another is when the hackers stole a lot of bitcoin and don't use it but we all know that this is impossible to happen.

It's it not the price going down but the shock forcing the price down that is the worst. Depending on what the factors are, Bitcoin will be likely to bounce up or not. If all governments decide to ban Bitcoin, though it may be exchanged underground, it will definitely drastically drop and hardly recover. But if the cause for the drastic drop is the manipulation of the whales, then there is a likelihood that Bitcoin will gain its value.

Title: Re: What is the Worst Case Scenario for Bitcoin?

If the price falls under $1000, a panic selling is predictable and sure to happen. The massive dump will discourage newbies from joining Bitcoin comunity. And the government will fish in troubled water by promoting negative news about Bitcoin and take it as an excuse to restrict Bitcoin transactions. This is a very bad scenario for Bitcoin.

Title: Re: What is the Worst Case Scenario for Bitcoin?

If Bitcoin drops to under 1000$, we still can hope a recover by efforts of loyal investors. But if someone find a way to control 51% of its blockchain, Bitcoin will be under the control of that person. And they can destroy Bitcoin.

Title: Re: What is the Worst Case Scenario for Bitcoin?
Post by: James Fleming on August 10, 2018, 09:45:08 AM
Since Bitcoin is changing the way transactions happen, it is breaking the limitation and dependency which we have on Fiat currency currently.
-First case can be a government ban over usage of Bitcoins.
-Second case can be a crash of any huge bitcoin mining firm which may occur due to hacking or any other security lapse.
-Third can be nonacceptance of Bitcoins from people who are not able to understand how it works.
When we deep think on how bitcoins work, we would know that it is a next generation technology, there is nobody who holds it, no authority who regulates it. The value is auto decided on the basis of demand and supply. Usage is a like a computer program sent from one wallet to another. This may create a ďWho moved my CheeseĒ Scenario for financial authorities.

That a huge structural fallacy is found, that will make it crumble to zero because it will immediately become unusable. The most possible option in this scenario is quantum computing reaching a status where Bitcoinís cryptography can be broken in acceptable time, like some days.
That would definitely destroy BitcoinÖ but it must be said that there are countermeasures ready for this scenario, like of course different cryptography methods or empowering the actual method (which wouldnít require toooooo much work). But anyway, Bitcoinís price would suffer an enormous impact of distrust, until the new cryptography system is implemented.
In any case, if this would happen, I would buy Bitcoins after the price reaches the low, this is sure.

After all.. it's unlikely that the price will really fall to $1k, even though it's like a scenario.. but basically it still depends on the factors of supply and demand, if indeed the price is low there are still many who buy it because the role is still important and plays a good role. anyhow the journey is, it's likely that it will always be in the dependence of many factors also the other matters related to its acceptance which really can't be ascertained.

I am not afraid of getting a low price of bitcoin but, what makes me scared of is that if bitcoin dies. I know there are bunch of coins could replace bitcoin like ETH but for me Bitcoin is still and will be the best all over the crypto world. Seeing bitcoin in cheap price is just normal because it is volatile hence expect that the price could fall or increase, in this situation, it is better if we will buy and hold it for a long period of time.

The worst case scenario would be USA banning all bitcoin related moves.
Back in the day when gambling was legal in USA for online gambling poker websites those websites made ton of money and one day FBI decided to seize all the casinos because of money laundry reasons and all that and all of a sudden those websites got blocked in USA and they had to move overseas.

Of course the big boys stayed and still hang around but nothing even remotely close to what it used to be. So we should hope the god that USA won't somehow ban bitcoin because if that happens than we are all screwed, that would be the worst thing that could happen in bitcoin world.

The worst case for Bitcoin is probably the rapid development of other coins, Bitcoin cannot keep up, so bitcoin prices cannot increase but continually decrease.

Even though there is rapid development with the Bitcoin, there is less possibility for other coins to have a community like Bitcoin. Bitcoin is always the dominant currency because the majority of the investors still have high hopes of Bitcoin compared to others because other coins price is dropping very hugely.

For hodlers since trust in bitcoin will be far less as an investment. But for the utilization of bitcoin,
it's a sign of normalizing the price range and possibly showing bitcoins potential as a payment system.

That is my thoughts too. Bitcoin is going to increase in price if we have good news and reducing in pricing if there are bad news.
