Title: Is this a legitimate Google App for MEW - Myetherwallet - ??
Post by: kren27 on August 09, 2018, 10:12:12 AM
Hi there everyone, I'm not sure where should I post this question so I decided to do it here on the beginners portion of the forum, since I'm fairly new here lol.
So earlier when I'm looking for an online ethereum wallet, I saw this one:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wallet.ether.myetherwallet9

Can someone clarify if this one is the actual MEW app for smartphone? since I did a quick research however I did not find anything about it on google, besides the threads in the past few months about possible "fake" myether wallet online.

Thank you in advance.

It is NOT. This app will most likely steal your private key.

The only mobile app MEW is developing is a simple kind of "2FA" type of login that increases your wallet security.

Pretty much what TryNinja said.

Just to add, you can access MEW on your mobile phone without an app. It's not a good practice to have your wallet opened all the time anyway. If you just want to check your ETH wallet's funds, go to a blockchain explorer like ethplorer[1], whereas you just enter your ETH wallet address and you can see there how much ETH your wallet has and how much tokens you have.

Thank you for the replies and the tips as well, as I'm tempted to use that application earlier, luckily I asked here first before using it lol.

That's why I don't like Google Play terms in registering app to their store.

Not just in crypto but on other things as well because putting apps there are kinda easy and many people take advantages of it.

Looks like the developer of that app are in hurry to steal some because they didn't give an effort to construct a good and well detailed information on their description unlike any other official app. They also used the link to MEW official website and used their email domain to make it looks legit.

I wonder what's inside the app including the manifest. The size is also suspicious with only 2.6mb. Obviously they just copied the content on the main site that's why it was small.

Please report the app so that Google will take it down. Not all are verifying the legitimacy of an app before downloading it. There are same app in the past and Google take it down.

There is no any Android or IOS app for MyEtherWallet. Then don't trust anything than MyEtherWallet website. Because they will steal your private keys. Then you can make a bookmark from the official MyEtherWallet website.

Thanks for everyone's response, I also got in-touch with MEW team and contacted their support, and within a couple of hours they released a tweet about it. While the IOS is already in betaphase while the Android version of MEW is still being created.

Be careful on choosing an app. There are many fishing app and / or scam app that gets some of your info.
Visit the MEW on your browser instead. Also there's an add-on called Metamask on desktop browser. It's safe.

I would only trust MEW site accessed from the bookmark. Keep in mind MEW has 2.2 thousand phishing clones only there to steal your crypto money. And don't be cheap, invest in hard wallet working with MEW (Ledger Nano S is a great example).

It seems that phishing MEW app was removed from Google Play store because I can't open link anymore. OP, your report probably saved quite many people from loosing money.

You're right, it's easy to upload apps there, you only have to pay $25 fee. Google Play is full of scammy, phishing and illegal apps. iOS App Store is better in terms of security because all apps uploaded there should be manually checked before making it available to download.
