Title: [GUIDES] on Bitcointalk. Index thread (until there is a dedicated subforum?)
Post by: LoyceV on August 20, 2018, 10:07:25 AM
[GUIDES] on Bitcointalk. Index thread

Two months ago, Vod (http://) suggested a "Guide" subforum (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4511686.0). I can't make that, but I can start with a list of threads that belong there. If this list gets long enough, I hope all listed threads can be moved to a subforum.
For maximum exposure, I may move this thread between Meta (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0) and Beginners & Help (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=39.0) once in a while.

Please post guides that should be added. I've already found suggestions from several users. For the sake of keeping this overview short, I won't keep a list of who gave which suggestion. I've edited some of the titles, click the link to read the original.
If something isn't worth being on this list, or can be replaced by a better guide, please discuss that in this topic.
If the list gets long enough, I'll add more categories.

Posting guidelines for Computer Hardware section (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4576802.msg41268015#msg41268015)

These threads are also still open to suggestions. As it is I usually point people to them when I feel they could use some of the information.

5. [SECURITY | GUIDE] How to protect your wallets and private keys (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4360427.0)

7.  [GUIDE] Generate your secure IOTA-Seed without using insecure online-generators (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3002939.0)
I think I should limit this to Bitcoin (and forum) related subjects, instead of adding altcoin guides. If you really want this: change my mind!

8.  Building headless Bitcoin and Bitcoin-qt on Windows (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=149479.0)
I can't assess the value of this thread. It seems quite specialized, should I add a section for technical stuff for advanced users?

About half your links were already mentioned. Please check carefully before suggesting new links.
Tip: If you click "quote" on the OP, you can search for the thread number to see if it's added already.

I've added it under "Other", because it's a FAQ and not a Howto. I'd like to add a guide on using the Lightning Network, and if someone makes it, it should be updated once new wallets become available.

I've added 2 more links.

I was trying yo change your mind with my guide :)

I think a lot of people can benefit from altcoin guides as well, not just bitcoin :)

IMHO, the altcoins are the new "wild west" where there are higher risks but you can also get higher returns as well.

I'd like to add a guide on using the Lightning Network, and if someone makes it, it should be updated once new wallets become available.

I have just published "Basics of the Lightning Network - explanation and wallets (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4940536.msg44524521#msg44524521)". I did not describe wallets in detail since they are still being constantly updated. There is no point in updating the guide every month. I will write such guide in a few months.

Courses [Video Tutorial 1.1.2 - Getting Started with Bitcoin Wallet] (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4721580.0)
Added, even though I don't like video tutorials: they're very time consuming to find the information you need. A tutorial with images is much easier to scroll through and quickly get the required details and continue.
I guess I'm not the only one, considering the videos I checked have only 3 or 4 views in a month.

Another comment (I'll leave this here instead of your thread): May I suggest to add links to the scenes you're listing? Example:

I would like to suggest the topic, which created by @Coolcryptovator

In fact, the topic is not a guideline, but inside the OP, readers can find a helpful link to the following website: www.stuffbydavid.com (https://www.stuffbydavid.com/textcolorizer) which is very helpful, convenient for someone who are not familiar with using BBcodes.
It's very easy to create BBCodes for readers' own interests.

As the topic author warned, "Never try over-using text effects".

There are thousands of very useful sites on the internet, but listing them falls outside the scope of this thread. It has to be a high quality site about Bitcoin before I add an external link.

Just found out about this topic, very interesting.

I made this topic some time ago, about privacy in the web. Take a look, maybe it can fit in your guide.

  Let's talk about Privacy  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3210982.0;topicseen)

Do we collect only a beginners guides? I didn't knew that. It says [GUIDES] on Bitcointalk in the title.
Maybe you can add a caution sign and add that need a certain knowledge to perform the operations given in the guide or just a simple " For advance users" will do the job.

This sounds bad, it's time to make a new guide on how to store your paper wallets save and remember where you have put it :D

No, but that guide is on the Beginners board, hence the small warning.

It's the one problem of crypto in general I've never been able to solve: I either need to store something physical without anyone ever getting to it, or I need to remember something without ever forgetting it. Either one of them I can only do with 99.x% certainty.

I think the .svg extension was the problem, just made new png files.

Exactly, the one from theymos is also easier but people have to look quite deeply if they don't have any idea about if/else. That's why I have thought to explain it in easier language.

This reminded me an explanation of the DT-system is also needed.

If there are any dead links in my OP, please let me know so I can remove them. I can't help it if one of the older topics listed has some dead links, or have the OP removed. As long as there are enough working links left, it's worth keeping the guide listed.

If they're any good, I can add them. It shouldn't be stuff like "my script makes you win", but a good (and honest!) explanation of Martingale for instance can be helpful. At some point, everybody "creates" that system on his own, only to realize much later it's called Martingale.
A guide on chances and statistics would be good too, and explaining the house edge and implications of wagered amount.

Gotcha. I was thinking about overviews (As there's some good resources from reputable users), but mixed that up with guides. Either way, I'll take a look tomorrow and see if I can't add a few things here :).

[Guide]: How to disable signatures without using scripts (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5102949.0)

I tried to search for available topics on this issue, because I remembered that I already read it somewhere.
I guess that it come from Jet Cash's post, not topic, so it's hard to find it.
Unfortunately, I could not find old topics on the issue (maybe I missed something).

If there is actually no available topic, this newest one might helpful.

Please post guides that should be added.

Suggestion for the Bitcointalk forum category;
[Guide] Factors to consider before joining paid signature campaigns. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5115291.0/)

When I started this thread last month I never knew it'll be appreciated by all the users who have merited, contributed and posted their replies. The first five factor were what I consider before applying and got accepted into my very first bitcoin paid signature campaign on the forum. I believe the topic is worth highlighting. I know we already have a signature guidelines thread but mine is different.

I'm not adding this. You want Newbie bounty spammers who don't read to read my topic, which tells them to read your topic, all because they don't read the topic they actually wanto to spam a bounty topic. That's a lot of reading they won't do.

April joke? :P

I have ideas, rechecked your OP, and thought that my ideas can turn into real helpful topic.
[Guide] Identify scam projects by hidden premined coin indicator via explorer (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5120422.0)
I'm not sure how to value this topic, any community input?

I was popping in to give a free bump, as I linked someone here.

Thought I'd give my input on this. If it were made into a larger overall topic say - Tricks and Tools to identify Scam ICO's  - I think it would make a good addition. On it's own it seems more like a bullet point to a greater idea. Don't get me wrong very useful and anything that works towards exposing scams is good in my books.

I would only add it if there were a bunch of topics that covered different methods, you could group them in a category. That or if OP put together a complete list of Tricks and Tools they use.

It's informative, but I don't think it qualifies as a guide.

I'm not into Ethereum and don't really know how to value this topic, but I've added it to the Altcoin chapter (which is more or less experimental anyway).

Well, you decided to ignore the board, so it means you don't want to participate in that board at all, including posting or reading a thread. If you want to participate here then don't ignore the board?

Sorry for being a little bit off topic.

My fault as I was searching through Meta and the pages of Ban appeals, then through their Created topics which tend to load a little slow for me tonight.

I wrote a Guideline on writing & readability so that members here can make clean posts for readers.

That's not perfect or a good write maybe but I tried my best. Not sure if it will get a space in OP, but I'd like to try.

Thanks for the various additions, but I can't claim the credit for this one. It was created by grtthegreat https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=520313

If there are no overall directory of threads concerning vanity wallet addresses, I'd like to have a crack at it.
