Title: Most trustworthy forum members for multi-sig address
Post by: philipmicklon on March 02, 2014, 05:40:06 AM
I'm working with some large (billion $+) charities trying to get them to accept bitcoin. As an incentive, I'm starting donation funds that they will receive once they start accepting bitcoin.

As you can see, I'm new here. So I need HIGHLY trustworthy members of this community to hold keys for the multi-sig address. Any volunteers? Any nominations?

A shame to see no answers. I think this is a good idea.
Perhaps ask in #bitcoin or #bitcoin-otc? Although I hate to make such suggestions, I am not that familiar with who is trustworthy. Perhaps ask some of the core devs for advice?

Although some opinions offered here would be good.

Lots of people probably scared to get involved with something like that since many rich people use charities as a way to hide and launder money.  I think Kanye West even runs one where his charity foundation paid out 0 dollars to charity and kept everything.  At least that's what the news story said.  I really have no idea how that's legal.

Why not hold the keys yourself? I will volunteer myself, Otherwise look out for the Hero members on here. Majority of them will be able to help you.

We are creating a service to provide what you're looking for. To support our ebay like marketplace (in development) we'll use escrow service providers, since we won't hold coins ourselves. The idea is to create an escrow marketplace where trustworthy community members can provide escrow (ideally using multi-signature addresses). Since it's a marketplace fees should be driven lower naturally by competition.

In the meantime, though, you might hook up with other organizations in this space. The two largest I know of are bitcoin100.org and bitgivefoundation.org. Bitcoin100.org has a similar model to yours, raising bitcoins to convince charities to accept them.

Thank you, Augusto, PMed you for your public keys.

I'd prefer multi-sig so people know I can't 'run off' with the money. I'm fairly new on the forum.

Thank you for volunteering :) Can you PM me 10 public keys (or post them in this thread)?

Thanks for sharing. Looks like their model is very similar. However, I'm going right to the top and working with the 50 largest charities from this list http://www.forbes.com/top-charities/

Thanks. PMed you.

Now I'm just waiting to get public keys back from those that volunteered so I can generate the multi-sig addresses using http://coinb.in/multisig/

Thank you, philipmicklon, for recently sending me a PM, bringing this to my attention. Sadly, I will not be participating. My decision was not based on anything gleaned from the internet, for I seriously didn't do an iota of a Googling, hence not now wanting to influence anybody else that may embrace your endeavor.

Phinnaeus, I just saw bitcoin100.org for the first time today. This is very close to what I'm trying to do. I see its in your signature. Are you the admin of bitcoin100.org?

If bitcoin100.com could do something like this (setup multi-sig addresses for each of the 50 largest charities) then I wouldn't need to.

By the way, Kudos to you for bitcoin100.org! Charities are the quickest way I see of increasing BTC adoption and awareness.

Thanks for sharing bg002h. I'm really excited about how bitcoin could transform giving. Are you involved with bitgive?

Also, you're a longstanding member since 2010. Are you willing to be one of the signers for these multi-sig addresses?

More members should participate. Show everyone that the community is active (if it is).

Ok, our first multi-sig address is created :)

A big thank-you to Augusto Croppo and LaudaM for being signers on this key. Its a 3-signature key with 2 signatures being required to release the funds.

I picked "Food for the Poor" from Forbe's list of the largest 50 charities.

The Multi-Sig key is: 375DZDd18AifM2yJxqdEM7B3rZz7VQvv2s

Funds sent to this address will be released to Food for the Poor when they agree to accept bitcoin donations and post a bitcoin address on their website http://www.foodforthepoor.org/

I started the donations off by sending $5 of my own money to this address!

I setup a google spreadsheet to track the top 50 charities (per forbes' list):

I verified the script @ http://coinb.in/multisig/

The script just need 2 signatures from 3 public keys.

I must say that I am not satisfied with that. If my signature is an option than I cannot support your effort. Therefore I cannot vouch for you until my signature is fully required.
