Title: Cryowallet Cold Storage giving 20 BTC reward if you can crack them.
Post by: tomjohndang on March 02, 2014, 01:33:40 PM
Excerpt from their site (Cryowallet.com):

"We're confident our wallets are bombproof when it comes to security. So confident, in fact, there's a wallet with 10 (yes ten!) BTC right there inside it for you. If you can break into it, and you tell us how you did it, we'll send you another 10 BTC for your trouble."

They have created a wallet that executes and exists inside only your browser memory. So even though your coins are stored away from centralized servers where (like gox) others can potentially steal them, you dont have to worry about losing your USB drive or other methos of cold storage as you can just 'evoke' your wallet from any other machine. When you log out,its gone again.

Pretty cool  :D

I think because nothing is running on their servers, rather it executes inside your own browser memory, there's nothing on their site to be stolen. the site is just a launcher for your wallet in your own local browser. So there's nothing to be intercepted, or hacked at their end.

It's different because cold storage usually means you print your keys off and hide them in a sock under the bed, or on a device like a USB stick or similar, but if you lose your socks or USB stick you lose your coins too. This makes that impossible. You can just hit up your wallet on any machine and it will run inside your local browser. Logout and it's gone again.

Interesting concept, and http://cryowallet.com seem sure they can't be cracked as they have put 20 BTC in a wallet and said it's a reward for the person that can get at it.

We'll see how that goes.

LOL isnt this pointless? I mean if the users got passphrase stolen, says bye to the coins?

Thats not what "cold wallet" means. The thief must get your wallet AND passphrase. With this, its simpler easier now.

As above, this isn't cold storage, this is just changing what you store on the USB stick.

I would exercise caution, as the site does not disclose ownership and is opaque.  They also seem so confident of their security that they will offer you someone else's wallet challenge.  That wallet belongs to warp wallet and is part of their challenge series.

LOL if somebody could crack their wallet they can probably make a lot more than 10 BTC by NOT telling them.

I think even offering a bounty like this demonstrates a pretty low level of intelligence.

The challenge wallet is simply lifted from:
https://keybase.io/warp/warp_1.0.6_SHA256_e68d4587b0e2ec34a7b554fbd1ed2d0fedfaeacf3e47fbb6c5403e252348cbfc.html

So no risk to anyone really except anyone foolish enough to use that site unprotected.
