Title: ledger nano s very confusing .
Post by: xcaret on August 31, 2018, 11:30:08 PM
just got mine from the ledger site this week ,and downloaded the ledger app.   I plugged my ledger into the laptop and opened the app,
first it say
s to connect and unlock your ledger device.
I did that and now im on the second step for about ten minutes. that where it says navigate to the dashboard on your device. ..well the dash board says version 1.2.8. and on the app the little circle is still spinning .I read about updating the firmware , but this is about ten days out of the factory. I'd have thought they would have it up to date .
don't know what to do now. I asked the ledger site 12 hours ago and no answer .

No instructions , no support .
I should stay with paper , and forget the electrical junk .

Since your ledger nano s version is 1.2.8 you must update it to the latest version I think the latest update is 1.4.2

You can follow the guide from here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDX0gEkpPkA

Then follow this guide to setup your ledger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPpZxOjvU10&t=2s

Then follow the procedure here to update it to the latest version if it still doesn't work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDX0gEkpPkA
He can't even get through the first steps to set up the Trezor, so he can't access the page that updates the firmware.

What's your OS? Did you try this with a different USB cable? Try to install the old Ledger Manager (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ledger-manager/beimhnaefocolcplfimocfiaiefpkgbf) chrome app, open it and update your firmware from there.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with the ledger nano s. When i got my ledger earlier this year it had an older firmware version as well so it required an update from their website before i could use the wallet. Have you followed the instructions for downloading and installing their new software ledger live?

This will guide you through the process it's fairly straightforward:
https://support.ledgerwallet.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002731113-Update-Ledger-Nano-S-firmware

I know you said the ledger nano is only around 10 days out of the factory but you have to keep in mind that they probably still have a stock of older ledgers that have not been updated yet. But after you have it up and running i think you will be impressed with all the features it has to offer plus your private keys will never leave the device which will help keep your funds safe!

Which "Ledger App" are you using? ???

Are you using the Chrome webapps? Or the desktop Ledger Live app?

Ledger Live most likely. The Chrome web app doesn't tell you to "navigate to the dashboard". Also, there is a big warning telling you to download the new all-in-one app when you open the old apps, so I doubt OP would just skip it and keep using the old version.

Maybe you really should. From what other people writing here, you must follow guides/technical stuff that most people just don't know.
It should be easy and secure, not only secure, because secure ways don't require you spending money, just have knowledge. Seems like you need to have knowledge and money here :(

The Ledger (and Trezor) actually require very little in the way of "technical stuff"... Granted, there is a small learning curve to operating them, but it really isn't anything harder than say connecting an iPod and syncing some music.

There are plenty of video tutorials on YouTube that show how to connect a Ledger, set it up and use it to send/receive.

Generally, the part that catches most people out on the Ledger is that they don't realize that they have to "open" the coin app on the device itself... Ie. Use the buttons to highlight the coin they are interested in and then click both buttons together to actually select that coin and open the appropriate app in the device.

Once you do that, the wallet app on your PC will then detect which coin you have selected and go about syncing and displaying your balance etc

Visit the Trezor (or Ledger Nano S) homepage to update firmware to latest version. This will help you  easier to using it with better using experience.

Thanks for all your help .
My Ledger Nano S is now working fine on my home computer.

As I only clicked on " bitcoin" and have nothing in it yet , My friend says he will send me a little bitcoin as an experiment ( neither of us know much about this ) , but I'm not sure how this part works.

I went to my Ledger manager , clicked on my bitcoin account and clicked on receive, I was given a long string of digits which I copied and saved.

Do I email my friend the string of digits, or how do we go about sending and receiving ?

I saw the box that would be clicked on to indicate " send" and no doubt the amount to be sent would be asked by the Ledger manager , and another string of digits or QR  generated to be sent to me .

If that's correct and I get it in an email , what do I do next ?

I'm not sure how I would get what he sends into my Ledger manager..
 Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks .

Maybe it wasnt best decision then to buy hardware wallet. I mean buying $20-$50-$100 hardware wallet to keep $0 in it is kinda weird idea.
You can keep pocket change in mobile wallet on your phone for free, you will loose it? Well not much harm done.

Best practice is to buy small amount of bitcoin on exchange, then send it anywhere, to your other address, to your friend anything. Best learning experience.

The long string of digits is your Bitcoin address. That's where your friend will send the coins -- I can't provide you with precise instructions right now, but there should be an address field when he's trying to send via the app. He should paste the long string there, and send.

Once he sends it, you can check the transaction by searching your address on a blockchain explorer like this (https://www.blockchain.com/explorer). It should also show up on your Ledger app. Make sure you guys only experiment with miniscule amounts.
