Title: A revolutionary Bitcoin idea free for the taking.
Post by: I.Goldstein on October 29, 2011, 12:52:36 AM
There have been many attempts at free web hosting services from Geocities to the blog sites like Wordpress and Tumblr. Never has there been a profitable way to give internet users free-range web hosting without tons of obtrusive ads and gimmicks until now -- using Bitcoin mining technology.

Using Javascript-based Bitcoin miners forced onto every user's website, you can profit on their activity through the CPU mining power of every client. Assuming users will flock to seamless and unhindered hosting with no ads, your CPU-based pool would have little limit in terms of size.

One could even imagine the whole internet switching to a paradigm of free hosting powered by client's machines.

Sure, it may not be an original idea but it's certainly potential food for innovation. Imagine the value to be gained from allowing people to host web content with little inhibition in addition to all of this excess CPU power we see being put to good use.

This could bring Bitcoin to its precipice while revolutionizing the web.

It would work nicely with a scrypt proof-of-work currency, like litecoin.

Doesnt adobe flash already do this???

I mean, what else could it be doing with all of the resources it sucks and laggy-ness it produces?  >:(

"Fuck Jobs for not supporting Flash! But never forget, fuck Flash!"

Yes, because web hosting is SO EXPENSIVE that tons of people are going to flock to host their site on a server that slows anyone who visits it's computer to a crawl and immediately gets them blacklisted by every web filter in the world.  This is a genius idea.  Whoever implements it should give you at least 70% of the profits.

Mr. Goldstein, you may not be aware, but there has been a previous scandal in our community with Javascript mining. These kids running a podcast used Javascript mining without asking permission - essentially stealing from their viewers. There was a HUGE expose on The Bitcoin Show (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThNpfl4wQww") if you want to read more about it.

So you can understand how this technology has gotten a bad reputation as facilitating theft. A Javascript miner that asks permission would be another story, but in any implementation you'd be working against the sour reputation the technology has acquired from imprudent use.

Using Javascript-based Bitcoin miners forced onto every user's website

I LOVE SEEING PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT JAVASCRIPT BITCOIN MINING.  Gives me a massive hard on.  Full four inches.   Seriously though, the topic keeps coming up.  I hope someone within Litecoin takes interest.

RIP Donny of BitcoinPlus :(

Great technology that has the possibility to succeed if it gets put in hands of people who actually want it to work.

He's definitely aware of this because he did the same thing himself and has been trying to defend it ever since. I'm not sure how this makes it a REVOLUTIONARY new idea, but hey, it's Atlas.

Of course this is one of the fundamental tenets of libertarianism: "Only I should be allowed to steal!"

I think Atlas is quite aware of the prior scandal. All too familiar with it.

I agree that browser-based mining is a good idea. It would need to use WebCL and the client's GPU to make it worthwhile.

Why do people feel the need to insult libertarians? Believe it or not, there are principled reasons for believing in a contract-based society.

Every libertarian principle I've ever heard or read about has involved screwing over somebody else. This goes for most bitcoin endeavors as well.

How about turning it into a game like Farmville. Apparently in this game people are pointlessly clicking around with their mouse, and by doing so they are being rewarded some points. Now there can be a game where they earn points without having to be clicking around pointlessly.  ;D

Yes! Let's clandestine steal people's CPU cycles for our own gain! Screw them if they don't see it coming. We should be allowed to profit from their ignorance. That's how I feel about it, anyway.

I don't think it is right to use others' CPU cycles without their permission.  It will give Bitcoin a bad name.

LOL.  Principled contract-based society == "hide stuff from people in page six of the EULA".  Awesome.

I'm sure users of fee based services like exchanges and auction sites would prefer mining in the background to paying fees.

nothing is free."Subsidizing" transaction costs only works if it's distributed. You pay through your electricity...and who gets the mined coins?

You guys are goddamn scammers. The lot of you.

Before someone here reinvents http://www.bitcoinplus.com (http://www.bitcoinplus.com), he might give a try to the original.

I am using it on a few low traffic blogs, and it is not intrusive at all, since it runs at low priority. But in about 3 months made me 0,003 BTC, since cpu mining with javascript is efficient like sh*t.

And that's the reason javascript miners for btc are plain stupid, so hosting websites and put a javascript miner on them will never be enough to cover the costs.
A javascriptminer for litecoin would probably be a whole different story.

Another nail to add to the list:
Really, really, really (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/) easy to disable (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/) the javascript miner.
